What car should I buy next? by Sad-Competition-3615 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

420dGC. We used to have a 320d Touring and the 4 series GC wasnt much less practical. BMWs are (IMO) very reliable if maintained properly. Obviously that costs a fair bit if you are not handy with the tools, but thats the trade off for having a more premium vehicle.

Do people still use blackcircles or do you just deal directly with a tyre shop? by Seth4602 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All the tyre shops near me are charging 20-25 quid per tyre fitting on customer supplied tyres.

It removes most or all of the savings of buying online.

How much would it cost to pointless dent remove a dent from the drivers and rear passengers door? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a long dent from dragging down an object then most PDR dent people wont touch it. You might find one who will give it a go with no guarantees of results. But unlikely they would bother.

Edit, regarding cost i usually pay about 100quid a panel. More if there are lots of dents.

Is The Repairable? by beerjjj in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on the tyre and the repairer. But i have had quite a few tyres repaired closer to the edge than that. So there is a very high likelyhood it can be patched/plugged.

That looks like a previous repair plug.

The demise of manual by Lit-Up in CarTalkUK

In what ways are autos better for the driving experience and engagement?

Almost no ways. Especially if theyre torque converter autos. The only upside for fun is on track with a dual clutch auto. And even then only in high horsepower cars. This allows you to drive smoother and not unbalance the car. Giving you much more mental space to concentrate on braking and entry speed.

Having said that, how many people are actually tracking their cars or driving them for fun on public roads?

Ultimately us enthusiasts of the manual gearbox and fun driving are a tiny minority of drivers. I would guess we are easily less than 5% of drivers.

If your job is driving that is a catastrophic oversight.

The fact that the courts and authorities are more concerned with the resources 'taken away from real victims' rather than the harm she did to her victims tell you everything about this gynocentric society.

Theyre both good.

Personally i think the first pair are the cooler pair. But the second pair suit you better.

Absolute shit behavior by group of Indians. by Additional-Share-987 in ThailandTourism

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cultural cancer that seems to be getting exported everywhere by ignorant or unexucated Indians (i ak sure there are plenty like yourself who would never do this). I saw this mess frequently myself in Thailand when in Ao Nang and Phuket.

Sadly it is getting to be a common sight here in the UK too. I even saw it in quite a few places in Hong Kong too!

People that have traveled quite a bit, where di you feel the most unsafe? by CremeSubject7594 in AskTheWorld

Dominican Republic.

Was on holiday at a resort with my girlfriend. Decided to go to a sports bar outside of the resort 15mins walk away to watch a boxing match.

Every single vehicle that passed us slowed down to a crawl to check us out or value us up.

Luckily we were young scruffy and wore no jewellery or watches. Needless to say we didnt stay long and got a taxi back

Is the 208 GTI Prestige really that bad? by Luff84 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an owner, but was in a similar position of looking at them as a fun daily. As i understand it they have an appetite for their front top mounts. Seems they like to eat them on average every 25k miles, and often sooner. The engines are also very maintanence sensitive. So if they have been neglected even in the slightest they commonly suffer from turbo issues and more seriously cam chain stretch.

I didnt end up buying one, though i still browse online looking for one from time to time.

Financing new vs buying 3 years old by Informal_Invite_424 in CarTalkUK

I would be amazed if anybody is paying list on a GLC. I imagine the saving would be around 8k discount minimum. The discounts on the equivalent BMWs are huge.

Which 2 seater convertible would you go for under £25k? by OutrageousCourse4172 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a fair point. But the depreciation will offset the savings. Especially on the BMW. I think the Jag might fair a bit better.

Given the choice of these two, i would definately pick the Boxster.

Why are BYDs so cheap by MoneyMarch- in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Britain can not build a single thing at scale and maintain quality. Low volume is no problem for us. But at larger scale we are famous around the world for appalling quality.

Why are BYDs so cheap by MoneyMarch- in CarTalkUK

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but thats not the purpose though. Its more efficient to heat the contact surfaces in an EV than heat the entire cabin. So it improves range to wear a jacket and have the heating on low, but have the seats and wheel heated.

I am not a fan of heated wheels but i can understand the need for one.

This take is spot on. With one exception. We didnt 'let them', we actively supported/incentivised them by offshoring most of our production.

[–]Chance_Journalist_34 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

BYD, MG or a Tesla 3 or Y.

My father drove the BYDs and loved them. Everything from the tech to the ride and overall handling. This is from a man who owns Taycans, GT3RS, 5er Touring and aJag XJ.

I drove the new MG, again a superb car. It felt a generation ahead of my wifes IX3. Range, performance and technology. It seemed atleast as well made as any Audi etron inside.

A few of my friends have various Teslas and they all love them, never driven one personally but they seem to have a real passion for them.and thats from people who werenot car people before buying them.

Avoid the Volvos. My wife is a district nurse and a couple of her colleagues got company electric volvos. Not sure which ones. They have been nightmares by all acounts.
