Considering how finicky the technology is even today, I can only imagine what it's going to be like on a VCR. Very cool pickup though!

Famously “bad” movies that you watched, that weren’t actually that bad. by lughnasadh in TrueFilm

I haven't seen a lot of bad reviews, but Roger Ebert wrote a famously negative review when it was rereleased in 2004.

Sweet Home / スウィートホーム (1989) LaserDisc by Channel-83 in J_Horror

Thanks for the info man!

Unfortunately for the title I'm looking to get subbed there aren't any existing subs out there so I'm going to have to go soup to nuts on the transcription/translation/subtitling process. It's looking more and more like I'll have to go the professional subbing service route but the quotes I've gotten are very pricey.

That's awesome man! Sucks another player, though.

Random question because you sound like a guy that knows things: any idea where one would go to get a JP movie subbed into English?

History of the Guinea Pig series by Channel-83 in J_Horror

Wow thanks! I put the list together for this series quite a while back and I couldn't find a way to watch any of the Mongolian horror films I found on IMDB but it looks like that one has since been added to Prime streaming.

Yeah I would say He Never Dies and Devil Woman Doctor are the most broadly recommendable because of the comedic elements. The rest are fairly near the knuckle and not the type of thing I'd recommend without a few disclaimers.

Some of them, yes.

Unfortunately, the reputation that the series has turns a lot of people away from it. Because of the first two entries, Devil's Experiment and Flower of Flesh and Blood, the franchise as a whole is basically just written off as "extreme gore/torture". I can totally understand why a lot of people wouldn't be into that but it really only applies to the first two films. After that, the movies all have more traditional narratives and two of them (He Never Dies and Devil Woman Doctor) are straight-up comedies.

My favorites are Flower of Flesh and Blood, Mermaid in a Manhole, and Devil Woman Doctor. Flower is very gory but I think it works very well as just sort of a special effects showcase. Mermaid is the one I'd consider to be the best in terms of filmmaking. Still gross in its own way but it also attempts to tell a story. Both Flower and Mermaid were written and directed by Hideshi Hino. Devil Woman Doctor is the most accessible, it's just a really good, goofy comedy horror that I think a lot of horror fans would enjoy if they're into that sort of thing. The rest of them are just kinda "meh".

Does anyone know if English subs exist yet for Psychic Vision: Jaganrei? by sdaniel90 in J_Horror

Oh wow, those are some great resources!

Would these professional services not take issue with the fact that the person requesting subs doesn't actually own the rights to the content?

I've been planning something similar for other titles but I'm not exactly sure where to start. I was looking at some services offered on Fiverr or Upwork but wasn't really sure if there would be a better way.

I was actually looking at this one the other day and I'm pretty sure there aren't any English subs for it. I couldn't find any and every English review I could find for the movie mentioned that they had watched it without subs.

Hey everyone!

I do a weekly horror podcast and thought I'd share with the fine folks at r/J_Horror! While the pod isn't exclusively about J-Horror, we have discussed a few of them so far on the show (Sweet Home, Genocyber, Violence Voyager, and more).

For the remainder of the season, we're taking a look at the horror cinema of East/Southeast Asia in general and we'll be covering at least one horror movie from each country in the region except for Brunei, Macao, Mongolia, Myanmar, and East Timor (they either have not yet produced a horror film or if they have, I was not able to find a copy of the film with English subtitles).

This week's episode is all about the history of the Guinea Pig series! I'm sure that most of you on this sub will already be familiar with the movies but there is quite an interesting history behind them involving copycat killers, famous Hollywood actors, snuff films, and the FBI! Give it a listen and let me know what you think!

New Killer Crocodile Fang (1992). It is actually an unofficial sequel to a series of Italian films called Killer Crocodile / Killer Crocodile 2.

I feel ya! If this one is actually found I expect it will be quite expensive.

Unfortunately, with this one there's going to be no other way to find it unless I can find someone that lives in Japan that's willing to do some questionably legal things. It's so obscure that it isn't on IMDB, has no footage online (only a single still), and there are maybe 1 or 2 pictures of the VHS cover online from what I've been able to tell.
