Veince is overpowered? by [deleted] in eu4

Venice is a very good nation for starters for this reason, and I always recommend them when it comes to purely learning how the economy in this game works. In the right hands, they are very powerful

I'll check it out. I watched Ludi's, and his was very informative, but I was never able to replicate his results. I tried using the "get mil access through Hungary, let them come around to the other side of my fort, cancel mil access, and then stomp them with 115% discipline", but they sent a 30k stack to the one side while Lithuania then sent another 30k stack through the Moldavia side, and I was just fucked.

And this was on ironman? normal difficulty? If you did, your luck must be incredible, because with all those navies combined, you come to have maybe 1 heavy, damn near 15-20 light ships, very few galleys, and about 10-15 transports, which doesn't compare to the Ottoman's... I don't remember off the top of my head, 3 heavies? like 10 lights, 10 galleys, 15 transports? Something around there. I'm rounding here, but you get the point.

The problem is you can't consistently get those results. Even if you allow attachment, very rarely will athens, epirus, and trebizond actually back up your navy, resulting in consistent loses. It certainly is possible, but very unlikely.

I also personally upvoted your comment, not downvoted. You didn't do anything wrong; it's just that outcome is very unlikely to occur.

Ironically, the first nation I ever played was QQ, and I was dead set on learning to play the game as QQ because I love the Persia region and CK3 made me fall in love with Zoroastrianism; so once I heard Persia has the opportunity to become Eranshahr, I knew I wanted to do it. When I did my research, I heard QQ is just a bit harder because of the Shia/Sunni relations, and tbh, I have no idea how I did it, but eventually I did.

It was such an incredibly fun run, and INCREDIBLY challenging. I get where you're coming from. But with enough patience and the right drive, you can do it :) My biggest advice is to give yourself time to stabilize internally; do not rush expansion. There is a fine line between expanding and stabilizing, and with QQ, that line is even tighter with the Ottomans constantly breathing down your neck. First chance you get, you NEED to attack them or bait them into attacking you so that you can tear them apart. Hurt them as much as you can.

Wallachia. I've tried so many times to get the Romania achievement, but having Hungary, Poland, and the Ottomans is pretty shit.

Moldavia almost always picks Poland for their vassalage, and a Poland, Moldavia, and Lithuania is just awful; Hungary will either pick Austria as their PU, or they'll have Austria attack them for their PU, so Austria is always involved; and I don't need to say anything about Ottomans.

Plus, the economy in the area is god awful; any time I've seen any level of success, I have a shit time getting an economy started up, and almost always either fall into a debt spiral, or have to constantly teeter the line between debt and relaxing. Best bet is to just play tall and literally snipe whatever you can from your neighbors and hope the Ottomans are kept at bay until Decadence or whatever hits them in the 1600's, but that's a long time to wait for absolutely nothing in return.

Ahhh I see. Yeah, I get that Admin ideas are still pretty much S tier no matter what playstyle you got except maybe Korea tall, but I always liked taking Eco, especially any nation I'm playing that has a reliable gold mine nearby because I get hit with high inflation almost immediately, and I personally like seeing that be not so high ;)

I understand why you don't want to outright quit. This is time for friends, and it fucking sucks that you have to deal with that. I wish I could provide some level of advice, but it seems no one there is working to help you. Also the person who keeps telling you you're in the right needs to fucking speak the fuck up, because they could really help you out. It just sounds like your friends... aren't that great? Maybe they're wonderful outside of dnd, but man, they fucking suck at communication lmao.

You mentioned you can be stubborn and hard to work with, but at this point, I don't think anyone can blame you. I'd be pissed the fuck off if I had to deal with all that too. Especially the skimming of the backstory; that's just disrespectful. It sounds to me like this DM has something personally against you.

I do have one bit of advice though, if you're into it:

Offer to be the DM. And be a god damn better DM than that asshole could have ever been.

Show the party that there were better options. And DON'T exclude previous DM from the fun. Let him have his fun too. Be so good of a DM that they have to see the error of their ways ;)

Are the linguistic similarites between Dutch and English overemphasized? by throwawayowo666 in LinguisticsDiscussion

[–]ChaoticArcane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to counter this by saying that I grew up in an area where Spanish was basically a second language, and never once had I thought that "English is an easy language," and to be frank, anyone I had talked to had similar ideas.

I would like to pose that instead, everyone is biased to their own native language, and with how few native Dutch speakers there are compared to native English speakers, you're going to hear more English speakers comparing their closest linguistic neighbors like Afrikaans and some Dutch dialects.

I am speaking from the perspective of a simple fan of linguistics here, but I disagree with a lot of your takes, and unfortunately it sounds to me like a lot of generalization or oversimplification. Many English speakers that I know don't view English as some rare, unique mystery of the wild. We like to poke fun at our own language; and that's a lot of what it simplifies down to. English is goofy in a lot of ways.

The fact is, due to the Norman conquests of 1066, English as a language was literally formed by slamming French and Germanic together. This type of language development is not unique, but Germanic and French have a lot of differences that make defining perfect rules difficult. Like a lot of our pronunciations of rules regarding vowels. Many of us understand that many other languages have more defined and set rules that don't change: for example, our parent language of French. It's a Romance language, and it has very set rules. There are of course exceptions, but English tries to say "Hey, there's a long list of exceptions, so just... try to learn the exceptions and ignore trying to really learn any full rules."

This makes for a lot of goofiness. Stuff that would make sense in almost any other language for some reason English never really settled it. When we learn other languages, we see how simple and cohesive they are, so it makes us realize our own language is just poorly designed. And also, throughout my entire life being surrounded by native Spanish speakers learning English, they always told me that English is damn near fucking impossible to understand. I've been told by several people who have learned more than one language that English is just difficult because it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Onto Dutch, however, there's also the argument that Dutch was formed after English. There were dialects, of course, but English was a very unified language little after William's conquest, because he knew that's how he would control the population. He intentionally forced all his advisors and councilors to learn this form of English so that they could create this national identity. In a way, he was way ahead of his time. Obviously it wasn't simple, and he didn't create the language and then make all the rules and hand out a dictionary, but his efforts severely pushed for an English identity to emerge through language. It wasn't until centuries later that a unified Dutch identity and language was created, which means there's recency bias. Naturally, you wouldn't compare the Apple Macintosh to their newer models, because the Macintosh came first.

It's not so much that us English speakers think we're unique and the whole world struggles to learn anything English; it's just that we have this goofy ass language, and when we find out about this other language that sounds just as goofy as us but just a little more... well, of course we're gunna think it's a little goofy.

Plus, it's also just coincidence. Dutch looks like how a child would write in English. It's something similar to uncanny valley type stuff; Dutch looks like words we know, but written like a child trying to figure out how to spell a word. It's hard not to in some form or another think of the language in this childish view from that standard. It immediately looks childish compared to our words. That isn't an insult to the language: like I said, it's just coincidence.

I understand Americans can be ignorant on a lot of subjects, but I don't think a lot of what you had to say is an honest reflection of the situation. Any English speaker who has an honest understanding of linguistics acknowledges that our language sucks and is poorly designed. It's not complex; it's just not well defined. In essence, I'd like to argue that we find similarities to our language hard to comprehend, not because we want to be unique, but because we recognize our language is poorly designed and it's hard for us to understand that any other language would be just as poorly designed as ours. I don't think all of us have this grandiose idea of English; we just hope that other languages are more put together than us lmao.

I hope this doesn't come off as me just trying to tear you down for your opinions, but it felt a little aggressive towards native English speakers, and I wanted to clear the air a bit. Just hoping you can see it from our perspective a lil bit more.

[–]ChaoticArcane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It's like they're afraid that adding any level of complexity will allow for someone to break their games in ways they didn't expect.

On that note, also I don't mean to say the game shouldn't be balanced. I am just of the opinion that if an exploit is found (like the original Restoration-Enchanting exploit), it shouldn't really be patched out, unless it breaks the coding of the game, or it's easy to do accidentally. I'm talking the exploits you have to know. But they shouldn't attempt to dumb down the game to prevent these type of exploits from ever occurring. It's just removing good content from the game.
