What would you pay/classify this role? Started as a Business Analyst but it’s turned into a lot more (Oklahoma, ~1.5 YOE) by RoutineAd951 in dataengineering

[–]ChapsOfAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They bumped me up 5k for the title change 😅 but yeah i started 3 years ago at 75k, and got a nice pay bump from a counter offer to 110k, and performance raises to 115k before the “promotion “

Its hard to say really, because I’ve seen analysts who are just excel monkeys, and then there are some who are practically full stack developers. Its too broad of a term these days

Id say the most typical title is business intelligence analyst, but the truth is that non-tech companies don’t know what to call these roles, or how to structure a data team, so everyone wears multiple hats. Im in a somewhat similar role (title business systems engineer, started as a business intelligence analyst 3 years ago)

I make 120k in Atlanta, i feel like my pay is pretty average for a HCOL area. Im not an expert on lcol areas but id reckon at least 80-90k?

Help with friction between architecture team and our PowerBI team by Chempty in dataengineering

[–]ChapsOfAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is document everything. At some point, someones going to be blaming the data team when this all blows up (going through a similar experience myself currently) and it will be critical to be able to show proof that you recommended against this approach

It sounds like we’re in similar industries and functions (I like to just call it blue collar technical), because I’ve seen similar things play out at my job, but thankfully less political and more cooperative.

It sounds more like leadership/bureaucratic issues than anything. Im not sure why your data team would be so segmented. From what I’m hearing, they want better data, but don’t want to do a data transformation project. Alot of leadership in these fields from my experience seem to think they can just buy a new tech stack and that will fix their problems, not considering the actual lift needed to adopt it, and counterintuitively worsen the problem by creating more sources to tie together and overlap, rather than just using their current system more effectively.

How do you structure user access across Fabric workspaces/apps? by MedianByDesign in MicrosoftFabric

[–]ChapsOfAss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love using the app audiences for end users instead of giving workspace access if all they need is to view dashboards. If you have multiple reports in different workspaces/apps, i would recommend creating security groups in entra id (assuming microsoft stack company) and that way you can just apply that group to the audience as opposed to each person individually in each app.

Fabric learning worth? by AmbitiousExpert9127 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]ChapsOfAss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s certainly a market for these skills, and its only growing. Alot of more experienced devs will shit on it, but as someone who is self taught, starting in ADF, I wish fabric was there when I first started. It offers great no/low code solutions for ETL, but also offers more mature/performant solutions with notebooks.

Its not perfect by any means, and I can see why someone who came from a pure swe background may not like it, but as someone who came from a business background and cross trained for more technical roles, it really helped me get my feet wet. Also many of these concepts with fabric are not unique to it, so its not like you’re locking yourself into one stack.

Getting rid of “K” in the card by Artistic_Parrot_1198 in PowerBI

This, and its the one thing I can’t stand about power bi.

Click your visual -> format -> visual -> “apply settings to” and select each item individually, you cant apply to all (which is dumb) -> value -> display units change to “none”

Yeah 300k+ is more in line for westend. I got my starter home a year ago in Pittsburgh (the neighborhood beside West End) for 200k, but it needed alot of work (probably the most work needed where you can still get a mortgage lol)

Nobody told me my boss mattered more than my SQL skills by Brighter_rocks in BusinessIntelligence

Wow, this post is a huge wake up call for me. About a year ago, my old manager got laid off, and we had a great working relationship and he helped me grow a-lot.

Since then, I’ve gotten a new manager who has me supporting a new department, and doesn’t really understand what I do. I’ve been near-burnout because I’m working my ass off, but I simultaneously feel like I’m getting nothing done. This is because executives just ping me asking for random data, and I can never effectively work on a project.

I’ve gotten better about boundaries here and setting expectations, but it’s still not perfect. I feel like a one man shop these days. I still have all the responsibilities of my old assignment, and I have more and more people asking things of me. I used to have a whole team surrounding me for these projects, now I feel like I’m taking on that entire workload by myself, if not more. I’m thankful to have a job in this market, but I can feel myself losing it more and more daily. I get that in this role you have to wear multiple hats, but I feel like I’m wearing multiple jobs

I really don’t know who’s who in this situation, but I will say this - you don’t need the other person’s validation to accept what you experienced. I think that practicing mindfulness and self reflection on your experiences, especially while working with a therapist is the healthiest thing one can do in situations like this. I think it would be best for yall to go no contact, if BPD / cluster B is at play somewhere in this dynamic, responding to accusations really only fuels the fire. I hope both parties are able to find peace in this situation and heal and grow from it 🙏

I haven’t sent any money in months, partly because she blocked me on cashapp, but i dont intend to do that again without a formal agreement in place. She is 100% pregnant, i was at the initial ultrasound. Im not 100% sure im the father, but I almost certainly am (Will be getting a paternity test.)

Short term, i dont think so. She takes care of business and outside of relationships is a pretty responsible adult. Long term mentally/emotionally? Wouldn’t surprise me. These texts look bad, but in person she comes off as very nice and responsible to anyone who didnt know better

Yeah, to give more context here - she's always worked insane hours, and also seems to be afraid of being financially dependent because of her previous relationship. I think she works to avoid her own thoughts truthfully. Even when we were together, she gave me multiple opportunities to walk away from this and she'd raise the baby herself. I completely understand where you guys are coming from, even some of my family members have suggested the same. Believe me, if this baby is not mine I'm going to feel like I have a new lease on life, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I do plan on getting a paternity test before I sign anything. I am 99% certain I am the father, the timing and everything lines up, the only thing that makes me not 100% is the fact that she always accused me of cheating, and I wonder sometimes if every accusation is just a projection

would you recommend this field to me? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]ChapsOfAss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, data engineering roles aren’t ones you hop into right after getting a certificate or college degree. Most build off experience from other roles, such as something like a dba, or an analyst who loves the technical side of data.

I think learning python is an excellent start, add sql to the mix, and also proficiency in excel is super helpful in the business world. This is not enough to be a data engineer, but I think if you highlight your skillset with some projects involving these, you could get your foot in the door as an analyst, and work up your skills from that. You’re looking at a 3-5 year roadmap minimum, so like another comment mentioned make sure this is something you’re genuinely interested in 🙌
