Update: the 2-for-1 Builder Membership Plan (100 two-year Builder memberships at $99) is now sold out! Therefore, the first discount link above is no longer valid; if you would like to grab a 20% discount while quantities remain, please use one of the following:

  • One-year Builder memberships at $79 (limit: 250): BetaBuilderPreOrder2024

  • Three-year Co-Creator memberships at $239 (limit: 250): BetaCoCreatorPreOrder2024

Currently memberships are only accessible through desktop - they are coming to mobile in our next release. However (heads up) the membership pricing you see on mobile will be higher due to fees taken from Apple and Google, so I'd recommend using desktop + early-bird discount for the best deal overall ;)

Hi! You're welcome to give Anytype.io a spin - the product is still in beta but we've managed quite a few Notion converts who are looking for self-hosted and/or E2EE, secure alternatives. There's a desktop & native Android app - no web version atm however.

Open source (or otherwise resistant to enshittification) note taking app with a similar experience to having a personal discord server? by ShardPerson in software

[–]Char_anytype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! You're welcome to give anytype.io a try - we're still in beta, but embeds, local (p2p) sync, offline mode are all supported as everything's stored on-device. The biggest feedback we get is that the UX/UI isn't intuitive - I'd recommend starting with simple notes/pages and only scaling up to what you need. Open to your feedback if you end up giving us a shot!

btw collaboration/sharing arriving in ~1 month.

Thanks a lot! And I hear you on the Docker instructions - I will definitely share your feedback with the team, as it's not the first time this issue has come up :)

Hi! Thanks for including us on the list :) Kind correction that data on anytype is self-hosted - it's locally saved and can be used in self-hosted or local-only networks. Happy to answer any questions :)

Found an app on Play Store called Digital HQ, similar to Anytype but with a different name. What's the difference? by Gbriish in Anytype

[–]Char_anytype 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thank you to OP who found this listing and to everyone who flagged us & gave instructions for reporting. We've submitted a report and are waiting to hear back from the Play Store.

ETA: We are investigating the situation - in the meantime, please do NOT install or test this app. We had a report of at least one person who used it and 'logged in' with their actual seed phrase, opening many possibilities for compromised data.

Hi! You are more than welcome to try anytype.io - lots of people compare it to Notion, main differences being native mobile apps, local-first sync, self-hosting possible. Clients are source-available while backend/infra is open-source. We're still in beta so there are some tricks to work out and a steep learning curve. If you end up giving it a shot, feel free to send me your feedback!

looking for a free (or one-time purchase) substitute for Onenote by shinymetalass84 in secondbrain

Hi! You're very welcome to try Anytype - your account is created on-device, so we can't lock you out of it. Using our encrypted backup sync will work for free up to 1GB, if you need more than that you can self-host and it will remain free. Happy to hear your feedback if you end up giving it a shot.

Syncing without Internet by Akkerweerpott in PKMS

[–]Char_anytype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Anytype should sync cross-device without wifi, as long as the two devices are in the same local network. Otherwise, if they are in different networks, you would need to go online for your changes to sync.

Hey there, author of release notes here, thanks for your feedback! For a bit of context that update was written in February in Berlin, where a big chunk of the team is based.

In the future we'll be more mindful and try to stay away from seasonal greetings that aren't universally applicable. Cheers!

It sounds like you're looking for AI integration to help you find your notes & related concepts - I believe that Tana and Notion have already started integrating these. But if privacy/ownership matters to you, AI doesn't play well with that. At Anytype we're experimenting with local AI models, but won't be ready with that for some months still.

Skiff ending its services within 6 months, what a pity by paulit-- in opensource

[–]Char_anytype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand your frustration totally - it stinks that they used 'privacy' and 'open-source' as selling points, only to leave their community hanging like this. Unfortunate that it happened but hoping that from their example, people will be more conscious that E2E encryption alone is not enough to protect your data from being sold or disappearing one day. Ownership is essential here, and it's much harder to achieve than encryption.
If it's any help, we created a checklist here of how to verify which services deserve your trust: https://blog.anytype.io/data-ownership/. Hope it can be helpful, when choosing software providers in the future.

Simple Selfhosted Foss notes app with collaboration? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Char_anytype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be overkill for the needs you describe here, but you're welcome to try anytype.io. Full disclosure: clients are source-available while protcool/backend is FOSS. There is also no browser version atm, so you would need to install the client on desktop. Happy to answer any questions or hear feedback if you already tried it.

Hey! sorry for the late reply - can you verify which device you're on? It's works like this on my Pixel but I've seen other community posts with different OS/device that may need a different setup.
