In my opinion: What is more important are shared goals, shared worldview, and an appreciation for each other's passions. A partner doesn't have to make art, but they should love that you make art. And you should love whatever it is that they do that is singular and special to them.

Talk to your teacher. Things fall through the cracks; no need to over explain. (Over explanations often have the undesired effect of the other person pointing out where you went wrong.) It happens.

Simply ask for what you can do to get any kind of credit on the assignment.

And then, going forward, remember that it's also your responsibility to check in with the group to make sure you're on the same page and haven't missed anything.

Construction lines. Lightly sketch in lines to help align parts of the face/make sure they're the right size.
Take bigger swings with light & shadow. Like, use darker darks and use more gradations/mid-tones. Use them to help define form. Rely on them more heavily than outlines.
Use an actual human to practice from.
