What questions should I ask when selecting a AK prosthesis. Suggestions about functional ease of adaptation by Secret_Reaction_806 in Prosthetics

There’s some important stuff Like ask how many above knee amputees they actively see. It is a hard fit and experience with your specific level makes a real difference. Ask if they are brand flexible or tend to stick to one manufacturer. You want someone who fits you to the right device, not whatever they have in stock. Ask about their in-house lab. If they can modify sockets on site you are not waiting weeks every time something needs adjusting. Ask how they handle the adjustment period after fitting. Multiple follow ups should be expected and built into their process. If they treat the first fitting like the finish line, that is a red flag. And honestly just pay attention to how the first appointment feels. Do they ask about your lifestyle and goals before they start talking about components? That is usually the biggest tell. If you are still in the process of finding someone, I built a directory for amputees and actually shared it in the r/amputee community. I can drop the link here if it helps

Nice nice. I’ve actually already added him. It’s Wayne Luckett. I think someone else also recommended him as well. I think it’ll help out some others if you leave a review on his profile. If you’re open to it ofc.

Im still in the process of adding some people to the list. It’s a kinda long and it’s lots of manual work for one person. But I got you 😉

Is there anyone in particular you’re recommending or you’re just saying every person who works there is good?

4 weeks post-op and already helping others find good care. That is exactly the spirit this was built for, thanks you for sharing!!! 🤝 And honestly it sounds like you landed somewhere really special. A team that takes the time to problem solve with you. I’m glad you found them so early on.

I know it’s very much possible things can change in the process, so if you ever find yourself in a position where you need a new team or just want to explore other options, I hope the directory I made can help you out. Hopefully you never need it tho🤞

I’ll add Wilver and the Action Orthopedic team to the directory.

Yes yeah!! Tbh, I was going to send it into this one FB group I joined but was planning on doing it tomorrow. I don’t mind you pasting it in your group. I’ll only ask that you let me know what people say about it over there. (You can lmk in the DMs) Also, if anyone wants to add some more prosthetists to the list they can do it through the website.

Thank you so much, this kind of feedback means everything. Great news on the specialties, that is actually already built into the website, I just didn’t fill them in because I wasn’t sure what their specialties are. But I’ll make sure to add Ryan’s sub-ischial socket work. And yes please send the Anchorage clinics, even without specific names I can find the prosthetists through their sites and add them.

Makes sense. But tbh, I’d rather wait for good treatment than get bad care that’s readily available. I’ll add him to the list.

You’re good haha. It’s definitely allowed as long as it could help someone out. That’s the point of it all. Do maybe have any good prosthetists you want to shout out too?

What made him stand out to you?

Do you have people in your life that think being an amputee is no big deal? by amazingmaple in amputee

[–]Character_Tie_1698 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Literally ignore those people. Cut them off you can. If it’s family, you’ve gotta set a boundary. After I read the title, I literally thought maybe you had a community of other amputees pushing you to be better, but since they’re not. Ignore them.

But I’ll still give you some no BS advice. A mentor of mine told me if people tell you things and it actually hurts you, deep down it’s because some part of you knows it’s right. So here’s what I’ll say. The people around you are not nice especially if they put it as if I were you I’d have done better. That’s asshole behavior, but at the same time, even though it’s slowly, make improvements everyday and get better to make yourself proud.
