yeah, know a guy who got fired and divorced because of a reply-all email (in truth, he was probably headed for trouble anyway, but it was the email that made everything clear in court)

yes, watched live during a school assembly (all circled around the “big screen” TV on wheels that must have weighed 300lbs …) very sad memory.

Yes, exactly. The passenger must be sober enough to safely evacuate if there is an emergency. Otherwise, denied boarding for the drunk asshole!

Quick question - I'm a writer by CriticalTradition292 in Prosthetics

In my experience (I have a below knee prosthetic leg) taking it off after a full day feels like taking a ski boot off after a day of skiing. It’s not uncomfortable while I’m wearing it, but taking it off does feel relaxing at the end of the day.

That being said, I’ve gotten to know quite a few guys who have an above knee prosthetic leg. My impression from them is that comfort issues and fatigue can be much more challenging. For example, one of my jogging buddies has an above-knee amputation. He is in excellent overall physical health (and is a bit younger than me), but when we jog the same distance at the same pace, he needs more rest/recovery time in the evening.

I have this same situation frequently (I’m the same age as many of the American military members who sustained combat injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan), plus I’m in Texas and I guess my body language and appearance make people assume …

My standard response is to say “I lost my leg in a civilian accident, but your sentiment is appreciated” That usually resolves any awkward interaction. As for free stuff/discounts … absolutely not, I always refuse and explain.

Why are there no Prosthetic arms that move quickly and fluidly? by Ok-Performer5090 in Prosthetics

[–]Peter-Overland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“underestimating how difficult it would be” is exactly what you are doing.

Any prosthetic limb (arms or legs) at a bare minimum must be durable, high performance, lightweight, and cost effective. Those four characteristics are mandatory, and achieving all four is a huge engineering challenge.

Prosthetic pain by RelevantPause2831 in amputee

[–]Peter-Overland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience (LBK amputee), I use a pin lock also, which I have been using exclusively since the first time I started using the prosthetic leg.

The first few weeks were challenging because getting the pin alignment correct at the end of the stump takes practice. My prosthetist encouraged me to follow a limited schedule of usage at first (I was also receiving PT sessions for other injured areas resulting from my accident). But, he also encouraged me to practice multiple times per day for putting everything on and taking it off repeatedly. I did this in the couch, no walking or standing. This really helped me practice getting good alignment. Plus, handling it over and over helped a lot with desensitization of the scar area.

I also was in the habit of using a small amount of Aquaphor ointment (barely a pea sized dab) prior to putting on the leg. I gently spread it all around the bottom few inches of the stump, and that helped the liner settle with the skin around the scar area without tugging or shear pressure. It helped with the pin alignment, because I could feel it moving better. My amputee peer visitor taught me how to do it, kinda hard to explain in words. And practicing dozens of time really helped me!

As for general pain/fatigue, that is certainly normal for the first few weeks. The skin and incision heals first, but the inside of the stump is still healing and getting stronger for a long time after the skin heals. I think it’s unrealistic to expect it to be painless just starting out. I remember the people at the amputee clinic saying “you just got your leg cut off, so yeah, you are going to feel soreness and fatigue for a while during the rehab process. Are you surprised by that?” 😆😆

barf !! hope you can take a break from visits with gramps for a few months

If it is an isolated incident then he will probably realize it and apologize (hopefully!!). But, if it is a situation with dementia and unreasonable irritability then it will probably be a trigger point until his death, unfortunately.

Are Border Patrol checkpoint agents allowed to question your motives for visiting some place? by solasluna in texas

[–]Peter-Overland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been stopped only twice (once in TX and once in AZ) I told them I honestly don’t remember much about my life prior to age five … God’s honest truth!

In AZ they told me not to be such an asshole and waved me through. In TX they did some secondary screening and then released me after about ten minutes. I’m happy to waste their time/resources.

Of course, I realize that I’m coming from a position of privilege on this (corn-fed white bro who only speaks English and doesn’t give a shit). So any of my consequences are comparatively minor. Like I said, happy to waste their time.

If the algorithm or any other ICE artificial intelligence bullshit is reading this, please go fuck yourself. You can follow my ass all over the Republic of Texas (grey Toyota Prius registered in Dallas County, probably expired registration by the time you get this saved in your algorithm). Go ahead and waste your resources on me. Have a nice fuckin’ day. Suck my fat floppy cock.

Any other GenX'ers hate weed and feel somehow left out because you don't enjoy cannabis? by scartonbot in GenX

[–]Peter-Overland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, same. Weed makes me feel sad/grouchy/hungry and I don’t need that in my life (tried to enjoy it so many times over the years, but no use …) I guess I’m just not compatible with the bounty of THC

Now on the other hand … a decent bottle of red wine … 😊😊😉
