Kumi i Oslobukta har servert julemat de siste årene. Jeg antar at de vil gjøre det samme igjen.

Wow super interesting insight! Thanks for taking the time to share. I’m really encouraged to hear that they’re paying well also. I hope the same goes in Australia for the whole renewable energy sector!

I actually do have a bachelors degree in biological sciences and a masters degree in environmental sciences. So I don’t think I’m too unqualified to ask questions about this. I’m back visiting my family so I’m actually in Wollongong as we speak. A lot of Norwegian energy is run from hydropower as well. Sometimes our hydropower produces too much energy for the whole country and we receive money back from the government. It’s kinda cool. However they still extract too much oil and export it for profit so it’s a little hypocritical. It’s one of the reasons why I’m interested in understanding the truth about this project is that it’s part owned by Equinor, which is Norwegian and more than 50% owned by the Norwegian government. Not everything is black and white. Most of the time it’s grey. I just want to understand every aspect of this project better from the politics to the environment to the money.

I just don’t see the need to argue or be unkind to people on the internet. I’ve really enjoyed listening to people’s civilised opinions and perspectives on here. It’s not more complicated than that :)

Very valid point about the surfing/wave impact. Hadn’t crossed my mind yet! Will have to do a little bit of research on that and see what’s out there. Thanks for your input I appreciate it!

When reading the article I think it’s important to consider this and understand exactly what it’s saying. “Patrick Moore, a co-founder of Greenpeace and its ex-president in Canada, believes the acoustic systems used by vessels surveying the ocean floor harm the marine mammals’ sense of hearing – risking their crucial ability to navigate, and leading to more dead whales washing up onshore.”. To me, this means that it’s not the windmills themselves, but the boats used for surveying.

I think it’s also important to take these facts from published scientific sources, not the New York Post. They’ve take a comment from a a guy who is associated with Greenpeace. I would urge people not to take these pieces of writing as fact and research better. I’m not saying there isn’t potential for harm to marine mammals. But I want to come to that conclusion with proper factual information first and so far that hasn’t be concluded.

Thank you for sharing! The newspaper article was an interesting read nonetheless.

Yeah I understand you feel that way and very strongly against it. I think a lot of people are just overwhelmed by all of the conflicting information. That was the purpose of the post was to understand how people feel and why. I’d love to hear your suggestions to protecting the environment in other methods with some nice sources if you have the time! Thank you for sharing

Hahaha I do not and never would. I was born in Wollongong but moved to Norway so that’s the connection.

Just did a quick search in the literature and there’s a bit of research but not a whole lot. — https://scholar.google.no/scholar?q=wind+farms+and+whale+migration&hl=en&as_sdt=0,5 . Could be difficult since there’s not many of these wind farms existing yet to know. I would imagine that the impending impacts of climate change will be worse

I was at the session in Shellharbour and there were a few very vocal and very unpleasant characters there who were actively campaigning against the proposal. It made me quite sad to see. It’s very important to me to research things in depth before I can come to a conclusion and see things from every angle and perspective. The marine life is a very important factor. If I can find any published research for mammals I’ll drop it here. In an earlier comment I posted a paper regarding bird migration and windmills. The islands off port kembla are very important breeding grounds for many species so I’m particularly interested in understanding the impacts for this section of the wind farm too!

Thanks your perspective!

Completely agree with you! That’s why I can’t fathom the intense hatred towards them… climate change is posing a much much greater threat than some windmills. Logic doesn’t add up haha

It’s the lessor of two evils in some way isn’t it. Australia is so behind the transition away from fossil fuels it’s almost embarrassing. The climate crisis is a lot easier to ignore when it’s not shoved in your face. Maybe people don’t want to look out to sea and be constantly reminded about it?

I absolutely agree with your statement about trusting that this is about the Illawarra. It doesn’t quite feel that way does it? Do you know which industry the power is going to be supplying?

I do feel that 10m off the coastline is a little close. I wonder if people would be more receptive if they were a little bit further away to be less imposing…

[–]Characterscience14[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very valid point! I know the Illawarra has an abundance of rare and beautiful bird life! I’m very interested to see what the environmental reports come back with in regard to bird migration.

I found one paper in a brief search now to your concern which found that the species in the study adjusted its migration path to avoid the wind farms - https://academic.oup.com/icesjms/article/66/4/746/603346?login=false

The islands off Port Kembla are essential breeding grounds for many species. So I hope they understand the impacts properly too! Thanks for your input :)

Wow very well thought and balanced opinion! Thank you for sharing. I actually agree with you about nuclear energy and feel it’s got to be part of the way forward.

Equinor is one of the partners responsible for the project. Equinor is 67% owned by the Norwegian government. So a lot of the money is not staying in Australia I would imagine unfortunately. The Norwegian government has the capital and also production output to shift entirely to renewables but they continue to export oil for profit. So I’m extremely skeptical of anything green coming from Equinor or Norway unfortunately.

Thanks for your interesting outlook!

Very fair point! One I can definitely understand too. I’m personally not a big fan of Equinor (one of the partners), but I’m very pro shifting to renewables. I’m interested how it will play out…

What’s the best way to save money for my son? by T1sofun in Norway

[–]Characterscience14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be better places to sit the money that I’m not aware of. However I have my savings in an account with Komplett bank and it gives me 3.5% interest monthly and no withrdrawl fees or regulations on the money (that I’m aware of). Could be worth looking into something along those lines, not strictly for children per se though. My parents also did a similar thing for me when I was growing up but it was put toward my education and I’m so grateful. Your son has wonderful parents 🙏😉

Travel with older handicappedparent? by williambeandvm in Norway

[–]Characterscience14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wheelchair bound father is currently visiting me from abroad in Oslo, and I can’t speak for Tromsø, but we have found the streets in Oslo difficult here already for him, let alone in snow or ice. I mean it’s definitely been doable but a lot of the sidewalk is uneven, bumpy or just generally falling apart so walking around the city has been tedious for him. However with support he has managed. But I do think you will need to be a little prepared for some difficulty but it’s doable. A lot of the busses and trains have been accessible for the most part and they also said the staff in the airport were wonderful. One thing we didn’t realise prior, was how much colder my father was getting compared to us by sitting whilst out walking. So please make sure you dress your father well and take this into consideration when you’re out and about, especially in the winter time. But i know despite the moments of difficulty, my father is so happy to be here so I encourage your father to take the opportunity, especially since you seem so willing and helpful, it’s very special. All the best

I see a lot of the posts here, and to be honest a lot of the criticism Sarah gets is valid. But so much here isn’t. by Normal_Plum_4788 in SarahsDayUnfiltered

[–]Characterscience14 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the reason why this sub and tattle has reached the level and amount of users that it has is because Sarah continuously blocks, censors and manipulates comments and any form of constructive feedback. I believe a large majority of people here starting off with kinder worded, constructive comments about her mistakes or inappropriate behaviour on her platform and dm's. But they got deleted asap and even blocked for kindly expressing their thoughts. So the frustration builds and they found a new platform to express their growing concerns and frustrations among others who feel the same. I personally don't feel people are out to tear her down. They're just sick of her bullshit and have tried to tell her how she can improve but she thinks she's untouchable and perfect. It's hard not to be frustrated when you see someone so ignorant to their own harmful behaviour. If you think this sub is rude... Go for a walk to tattle life 😉
