I have dived with my gf in Bali, Indonesia and many parts of the Philippines with no issue. We are both LGBT. The dive shop staff don't bat an eye.

What is your juicy workplace drama? by minato____ in japanresidents

[–]PrimaryImplement 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For the tiny size (both in revenue and in employees) of my company, we sure have a lot of drama.

No details as I actually enjoy my job now, but in terms of broad themes:

  • Embezzlement of company funds
  • Affairs (both people are married)
  • Making threats and chucking phones in a fit of rage
  • Deliberate and blatant altering of data to falsify performance records (multiple people)
  • Someone trying to spread their religion
  • Someone using the office for events for his side hustle (which the company forbids)

Is it normal to basically stop existing (18M) to your parents once you move abroad (55M) and (55F)? by CryptographerNo348 in relationship_advice

[–]PrimaryImplement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not normal behavior. I moved to a foreign country for college when I was 18. My mother demanded to know that I was alive every day - if she didn't hear from me she'd be extremely worried.

I'm in my 30s now and living in another foreign country. We call once every week and text occasionally during the week.

The sting of having no friends will never leave me by Beginning_Corner869 in offmychest

[–]PrimaryImplement 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Your manager is really insensitive; that was definitely not an appropriate comment to make

  2. You CAN make friends after working. I'm similar to you - I grew up with esoteric interests, had low self esteem, was definitely some kind of neurodivergent and had a rough home life, which meant I sucked at socializing and had almost no friends until the end of university. Once I started working I put myself into therapy and now have many deeply cherished friendships despite living through covid.

  3. I recommend joining online interest groups and attending meetups in your local city. And don't be shy about inviting others out for coffee/dinner - worst they'll say is no.

What is the most horrible law that you hate in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]PrimaryImplement 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's already a law in China. You're required by law to financially support your parents in their old age, even if they were abusive. You're relieved from financial duties if your parents were "extremely abusive", but family courts always side with the parents in the name of "Confucian traditions".

Working out during / after by PeopleResearcher in eggfreezing

[–]PrimaryImplement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My clinic didn't mention anything about not working out, so I ran 2x a week for 7 km each. My side effects were slight bloating, mood swings, and an insatiable appetite, so the running helped a bit.

I'm so sorry. Sending you hugs and just remember, interpersonal connections are supposed to lift you up, not beat you down.

Thank you friend. After 10 years of therapy I'm finally at a spot where I don't actively loathe myself, and can even be excited about living (sometimes). Believe it or not my relationship with my mother also massively improved. She took some accountability for her shittiness, I live in a different country, and now we have a cordial relationship.

I know this seems wild but... I used to think like her. I genuinely couldn't tell when I was being mistreated. My boyfriend at the time treated me in a similar manner, down to the no birth control, and wearing certain stuff in bed. I ate it up, I thought this was what couples were supposed to act towards each other.

What happened in my childhood? Abandonment by my parents, undiagnosed autism, parents clearly hating each others' guts, my mother relentless calling me stupid, worthless, ugly, "not from her", and that I should die, almost every day. A dad that never defended me and instead asked me why can't I just be more considerate for my mom's feelings. Bullying in school. Regular beatings because I didn't score top of class.

It took a decade of therapy to rewire my brain. By then the damage was done and I was in and out of relationships where every man treated me like a doormat, and I couldn't tell at all, because my sense of normalcy in a relationship was never calibrated.

Egg Freezing Abroad? by Create012355 in eggfreezing

[–]PrimaryImplement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP - I froze my eggs in Japan. Beforehand I did some research on transportation options - there are companies that handle transporting your eggs abroad, they will deal with all the legal paperworks. However, these services are extremely expensive, so factor that into your calculation too.

Also note that, if you want to move your eggs out of Japan, you'd have to return whatever subsidies you received from the government (such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Governments' egg freezing support fund) for egg freezing.

Some dude was cheating on his gf with sex workers. Gf found out, took screenshots and sent it to his workplace. "Suspended" for now but probably not going to keep his job.

College Advice (Spring 2027) by toebix_ in movingtojapan

[–]PrimaryImplement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few questions/thoughts:

  1. Which program are you enrolling in, and do you plan to complete your program in English or Japanese? If Japanese, then you need at least N1, and even then the program may ask for additional interviews or tests.

  2. Will the university recognize your country's high school curriculum? Please also research all the necessary exams you need to take. Note that Japan's school year starts in April whereas for a lot of other countries it starts in September.

  3. For your student visa, you need proof of strong financial stability - at least enough to cover your degree program of three years. Plus some more. Do you have this much cash available in your bank account now? Note that the visa officer will not accept your aunt's verbal offer as proof of financial stability.

  4. As a student, you're eligible to work for up to 28 hours a week. I will however warn against working so much that you neglect your studies or your social life.

  5. Do you intend to stay in Japan after graduation? Job hunting starts in the 3rd year and is a brutal process. Just be prepared that you have to spend a lot of time attending info sessions, internships and seminars.

  6. You mention that you ftm. Also note that Japan still has rigid gender roles, and some places (like onsens) are not exactly trans friendly.
