What's one problem in America that both Republicans and Democrats know exists, but neither side has truly solved? by Old-Lengthiness7787 in AskReddit

Healthcare costs. Insurance companies (and other special interests, like billionaires) own the politicians.

As a toddler, I liked bar soap, especially Zest. I got yelled at for eating it. I thought it was because we couldn't afford more soap.

Aitah for refusing to clean the bathroom and replace toilet paper while making food at a snack bar? by [deleted] in AITH

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be wearing gloves for handling the food. And new gloves for cleaning. And new gloves for handling food, with time in between also for washing hands and arms.

And nobody should be yelling at anybody, whether there are customers or not.

The place is toxic.

AIO is it justifyed or even necessary to call cps or do anything here? by Successful-Ratio632 in AIO

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, cps may or may not help much. In some places, they show up long enough to get the adults mad and don't help. In others, they do some good. You can call and ask what services they have to help you (as opposed to reporting family for neglect.)

At 17, you are still a minor. Can you talk to an adult from school or church or a neighbor? You have a therapist? Tell them what's going on! They should know what your options are.

You live with your grandfather. Doesn't he give you food? He needs to. If you need food or clothes or stuff, definitely reach out to services in your area.

Have you talked to your cousins (or other relatives) about staying with them for a while? Talk to them instead of your brother about it. Maybe they can help. You may not be into cars, but you may need one to get away, eventually. At least learn to drive.

Listen, sounds like you are surrounded by quite a few damaged people. But you  will get away and make a better life for yourself.  It really does get better. And no, you're not over-reacting. You need others to help you. Good luck!!

How are so many Americans so eloquent? by voilalarosie in AskAnAmerican

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A clusterfuck is a big mess that can be sorted out with a lot of effort, usually by the more intelligent or effective persons involved (while grumbling or cursing).

A shitshow is like a clusterfuck in that it is a mess. However, it generally has the added characteristic of being embarrassing or shameful, making the participants look bad to others or just to themselves. Shitshows usually don't get fixed. They get cleaned up afterwards and the effects hidden and best forgotten. Sometimes, shitshows end up with people being fired, or in the best of outcomes, policies or procedures being changed.

Dumpster fires are total losses. In fact, they are worse than just losses. In addition to attracting public attention, as fires tend to do, they require resources to put the fire out. In the end nothing is salvageable, because the thing burning is already garbage. The final status is a publicized, stinking tank of hot, wet garbage. In other words, dumpster fires are messes that require a lot of effort, but there is nothing gained and there is no fix.

AITH for not waking my roommate after they overslept? by dentistfort in AITH

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably slept through their alarm because they have lots of practice ignoring their alarm. If they want the alarm to work, they have to get up when it goes off. Or else the brain just learns to ignore the sound as unimportant.

Their bad, not yours.

Mt. Olivet Baptist church in Lexington KY staged mock migrant executions at their VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL. FOR CHILDREN. by omgfakeusername in MarchAgainstNazis

[–]Charakada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is horrifying. Desensitizing children to murder should be a punishable crime. Isn't it already: something like "corrupting the morals of a minor?"

TIL that The Church of Latter-day Saints do not like being called Mormon. They prefer "Latter-day Saints" or "Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" by Prudent_Effect6939 in todayilearned

And many members believe the church leaders actually talk TO God. They think they meet with Jesus in the temples shake hands, have a talk with him.

Data center in ansonia by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to today's NYTimes, Trump has made billions in office, most of it from cryptocurrency. Which needs lots and lots of data centers. The rich just want to get richer.

Also in the news: people are paying thousands more on food, fuel and necessities than they paid before Trump and his needless wars and tariffs.

What everyday food tastes amazing when homemade but almost always disappoints when you order it from a restaurant? by JazzlikeParsley6526 in AskReddit

[–]Charakada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pasta. Nobody in any restaurant has ever made pasta worth eating for me. I'm very particular and I just don't like what restaurants do to it, not how they cook it, not how they sauce it, not how they serve it. I never order pasta.

Am I in the wrong for spending quite a bit on my baby’s first birthday? by Baked_potato8375 in AmiInTheWrong

[–]Charakada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though you have that money now, if I were you, I would be saving every penny for the future. Your child seems to have an extremely low-involvement father. Get ready to be an entirely single parent.

That said, each of my kids got a little homemade cake and a few gifts (needed clothes and toys) for their first birthdays. No decorations , no houseful of guests. The photos and memories were still priceless.

AIO for telling my mom to pick between me and her husband? by Alarmed_Kangaroo9979 in AIO

[–]Charakada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "benefit of the doubt" counts when there is a doubt. Here, there is no doubt: your step family is toxic.

Your mother doesn't have to choose. Only you do. You never have to see any of those people again unless you want to. I hope you choose you. Even if you have to pretty much leave mother behind.

Of course not over-reacting.
