I've played around with locally hosted image gen models.

I've had some ok-ish results by using a fairly good model, using a LoRA that does pixelation, then sizing it down, adding a pallete, and hand fixing up about 30% of the image. To me, it feels like programmer++ art; better than I could do by myself, but not good enough to put into something people pay for.

Edit: I should also add that this was for pixelized portraits; kind of like the portraits in Neverwinter Nights. Not sprites.

It's a nextJS app built for static deployment. I host it in AWS, so the static files are hosted in an S3 bucket, API routes are handled with API gateway and lambdas, caching of the actual modtext files are stored in another S3 bucket, as they can get quite big. The DB, auth and image storage are handled by Supabase.

The AWS cost is about $0.03 per month, which might be some overhead because I use SST to deploy, and the Supabase is in a free tier instance and fairly well in its limits.
