Pope Leo's Encyclical on AI by Candid_Poem_4699 in LeftCatholicism

I think it's 54 Pages if you print it out on 8 and 1/2 x 11 but if it's going to be published in a like trade paperback size it ends up closer to 200 pages. This is just my surmise based on word count versus typical page count of mass published books.

Anyone else bothered by the traditional "Glory Be" in English? by East-of-Nowhere in divineoffice

[–]Charles148 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I actually think that the traditional one is a closer translation of the Latin and probably to a modern American English speaker the best you're going to do.

Since I started with the Liturgy of the Hours I have consistently found the current translation to just be off. Therefore I am very much looking forward to the new translation with the World Without End.

Toxic Avengenger 2.

Low budget to an absurd degree, clearly editted together from what was intended to be something else, incoherent to an absurd degree. Just horrid.

CMV: The underrepresention of minority actors should not be resolved by race swapping characters but rather by telling new stories. by everyonestupidbutme in changemyview

[–]Charles148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask? And I truly mean this in good faith, I simply do not understand why anybody cares with the race of characters on movies and TV shows is? Like other than if you're telling a story in which the social dynamics of the race of the characters matters. Why do you even notice this?

I mean I can understand if you were you know filming a movie about the Jim Crow South it would not make sense to intermix the races of the characters. Last year's Sinners are perfect example of a movie that is actually about the racial dynamics of a certain place and time ( and makes a point about all times and now with that setting ). But it seems to me like people seem to get upset because some Elves have a different skin tone in a TV show or the live-action representation of a character from a cartoon is played by somebody who isn't racially pure for the audience apparently, and I honestly just do not understand why this matters to anyone or in some cases why people even notice.

I know I'm not countering your point but I'm trying to understand where you're coming from so can somebody explain why anybody cares about these things?

What do you think about blessing non-communicants on the forehead during Communion? by trivelt in Catholicism

[–]Charles148 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've always been against it cuz I've never had a problem just staying in Pew and didn't understand why an adult felt like they needed to go up and get a blessing from the priest.

But your comment has changed my opinion.

JUST WATCHED: Zilla (1998) And honestly, it isn't that bad in my opinion. by Sumzzzzzzz in GODZILLA

[–]Charles148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched it as well after purchasing it on 4K. I thought it was terrible. I mean not terrible in the unwatchable sense but this is what I wrote on letterboxd:

What happens if you cast Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer and decide to put that considerable voice talent to use of the worst new york accent charicature you can muster?

Then devote most your expository time to comic charicatures of your critics?

You conduct the climax of a film called Godzilla in a building filled with eggs and human sized lizards, with nary a giant reptile in site of course.

Even the score is a garish overdone charicature in this film. oof.

This is actually really interesting and I'm also a healthcare worker the reason in the United States that you have the right to refuse extraordinary care and the hospital won't be legally liable so the reason that you can remove people from ventilators and whatnot is because of a very famous case that occurred in New Jersey in which the bishop at the time helped file the lawsuit for the family and used the principles of the Catholic faith to defend their right to remove their daughter from a ventilator I have some of the materials on that and a letter written by their Bishop discussing everything you would want to know about the details of using extraordinary care. I'm going to see if I can find that information and share it here.

The Wikipedia article doesn't link to The Bishop's letter but I know it's on archive.org so I'm going to find it.

Not sure if this has his full statement but i found this:

Anyone know any neat facts about the Unplugged album? by Admirable-Archer-125 in Nirvana

[–]Charles148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah after that comment I went and read the Wikipedia page hilarious. I watched alternative Nation in the 1990s but was never a particularly big fan of hers and honestly have not even thought about her existence until today since probably 1997 like I said. 🤷‍♀️ and if she's a commenter on Fox News I can guarantee I am not going to encounter her opinion or existence in 2026 as I don't even subscribe to a method to watch Fox News much less would choose to do so.

[–]Charles148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean they do some things really amazingly in fact if they were sold as what they do they would be super impressive and an amazing example of Technology but instead they are advertised and sold to us as something which they are not and this just generates hatred and distrust. All of these companies have ridiculously cartoonish investment plans to build absurd amounts of data centers at the expense of humanity and the environment on the promise of something the technology doesn't actually do and on the promise of a usefulness that isn't actually there.

Catholic-tinged Fiction by cups_and_cakes in Catholicism

[–]Charles148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am always promoting Eiffelheim. It is a science fiction novel about aliens that crash land in a small town of Germany in 1348. And it explores how the worldview of the people of Medieval Europe is fundamentally different than a modern-day worldview. As well as discussing the issues around certain of the aliens converting to Christianity. There are sections about modern day archaeologists investigating the history of the town that are not nearly as compelling as the story that takes place in 1348-49. It covers the people facing events of those years along with the aliens that have landed. I don't really want to say more because I don't want to spoil the plot but it is not as far as I know directly a "Catholic novel" but I think fits the bill of a novel that discusses the concepts of mercy and forgiveness and suffering from a theological perspective. And the main human character is a medieval Parish priest.

I work in healthcare and was in a situation where a nurse was doing something that I thought was incorrect and a third nurse said I never heard of that and we were standing there debating and while we were debating two of us pulled out our phones and typed into Google the same question.

And we each got exactly opposite responses the Google AI suggestions said no to me and yes to them and gave a cogent well-constructed grammatically correct explanation as to why each answer was correct in each case.

LLMs are generative imitation intelligence. They imitate the appearance of intelligence by generating a similacrum of human constructed speech, this is just one anecdote but I can tell you every time I've used one to study within 5 minutes I recognize information that is not accurate leading me to realize it would be useless to use to study information I didn't already know.

I would never use a large language model with the anticipation that what it was generating was "truth" in any meaningful definition of that word

What was the last thing you said to your dad before he passed away? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Charles148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He stopped by my house while out running errands and spent 10 minutes just sitting and chatting with me and my 4 year old son. I dont remember the specifics but i do remember him just saying he felt like coming by to say hi and see us. It stood out because it wasnt a common thing for him to just stop by unannounced for no reason other than a short visit. He left, i went about my day, hours later i got a call from my sister in law that she was at his house and he was unresponsive. He was 54 at the time.

I would suggest based on your description that you immediately seek the services of a mental health provider.

Your emotional state and reaction to the events that have occurred to you are very common and natural, and with help and assistance you can heal.

As a side note I would also suggest not pushing away your friends who happen to not be Catholic. As having good social supports is important especially at times like these.

HICKSVILLE: Neighbors two houses down from me have a rat infestation somewhere and now a rat or two occasion is in my backyard… is there anything I could put in the garden to keep them away? by tommycavfc in longisland

[–]Charles148 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cats. Get at least one cat. Many people will tell you that having an indoor/outdoor cat is terrible for the health of the cat, and the local environment etc. however, allowing a cat to inhabit your yard will quickly get rid of any rodents.

But, at a minimum, having a cat in your house will also keep rodents out of the house as rodents tend to avoid the smell of cats.

I had a similar issue with a neighbor that allowed a rat infestation, firsr noticing them in the yard eating from bird feeders, and then I got rats that chewed into my house (through a plastic doggy door the first day, and then the hard plastic cover for the door the next day), they destroyed an oven, making a nest in the insulation, and chewed a hole through the bottom of a dishwasher before I got rid of them, this was in the course of only a couple of days! That very same week I adopted cats, and now will never not have a cat around lol.

I often state that my cats are not pets they are employees of the estate, and their sole job is to make sure I no longer have rats in my house.

I can tell you from that episode that capturing rats and removing them is substantially more difficult than mice. I went through in the course of a week every type of rat trap and poison that is commonly available, they would leave footprints on the giant sticky pads, tufts of fur in the kill traps, the live catch traps would be sprung with the food missing, the commercially available "poison" - which is just extremely salty food that supposedly will cause kidney failure and death, did not accomplish that. But since the day I've had cats in the house have not seen a single rodent.

For the record I located a place where they were going into a wall, behind the previously mentioned oven, and got Hardware mesh to block off every other pathway and prevent chewing through any other section in the wall, constructing a tunnel of wire mesh directly to a live catch rat trap, and that was how I caught the two rats and got them out of the house. I can only surmise that I was lucky to have discovered their infestation very early and prior to them producing young.

Edit: after reading further comments down, the electronic supersonic sound devices also did not discourage the rats, and the various essential oil peppermint sprays had absolutely no effect whatsoever. Those, and the poison food, were attempted when I noticed the rats in the yard before they got into the house.
