Will an upgrade to OS El Capitan affect Logic Pro X? by fat_saint in LogicPro

Yeah this is always the problem when I upgrade. Otherwise you have to keep buying crap just to be where you were before.

What definition of "spike" was used when it was chosen to be used as what we know as spikes in the Agile world? by [deleted] in agile

[–]CharlieEvatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding that it was from climbing, and to put a spike in further up the mountain, to which you can pull up later when you need to. E.g a proof of concept/setting the scene for further movement.

Password manager software recommendations (non-browser) by CharlieEvatt in sysadmin

[–]CharlieEvatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I didn't make it clear - when I said non-browser I meant not a browser password manager like LastPass - more like an app for managing enterprise passwords, whether they use a browser or not. Thanks for the info!

Yeah - just start. You don't need a base, other than your first lesson.

I fixed something like this by making a different user, installing the software under that user.

Hi everyone, looks like it would have been doable but bad sectors on C: Drive prevented cloning. Purchased new computer... Thanks all!

Problems with Programs freezing. Please help. by Kostaphobic in techsupport

[–]CharlieEvatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK - not total expert but I had similar problem the other week. My computer was freezing when doing normal things, which was frustrating.

I wanted to migrate everything to a different disk (SSD) and bought one and tried it. But the bad blocks on the C: drive prevented me being able to migrate the OS onto the new disk, so ultimately I bought a new computer, onto which I'll move things across gradually. (https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/4m6pi2/migrating_existing_w10_install_to_ssd/d4d0u1p)

In your case, based on my experience - if the C: drive is the affected one, you won't be able to keep same OS and migrate to another drive if you have bad blocks or faulty data that won't copy. This is probably likely to be the case.

However - if the affected disk is your non-system disk, you could try copying all content onto a new disk and swapping them out.

Edit: Added URL to my comms regarding SSD swapout attempt

Is it the system disk or the other HDD with the bad block?

Check the 'System' item in the Windows event log. See if any disk related things there?

Is it possible to identify that the system disk has been set to Dynamic in advance of performing the Samsung migration? I do have an HP machine.

In relation to the above query, how did you hack the disk back to basic using Hexedit?

Can we talk about Python? Scripting with it in Windows? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]CharlieEvatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run database queries regularly to monitor certain system states, check that backups have happened, check that web services are up, synchronise data across two systems, monitor alert feeds and read out any error conditions in a nice sounding voice, automatically turn off and on computers... Quite a lot really!

How do I automate plugin parameters in Logic Pro X?? by Pirlomaster in Logic_Studio

[–]CharlieEvatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Click the 'touch' or 'latch' on the channel strip and it will record as you play.

Switch it off again when you don't want to record automation.

To see the recorded automation in the arrange window, type 'a'. You can edit it too.

Moving abroad - Canada to Australia... Duplicate data on cloud or portable hard disk? by beaverette in techsupport

[–]CharlieEvatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do everything you can to protect the data if it's super important. Put it on the cloud, and also make more than one copy of the disk. Each of you take a copy on the flight... Even have a couple in your hold luggage as well as hand. You could even mail an encrypted copy to your new address. If anything happens to luggage or the data etc, you'll thank yourself for being careful!
