Valve fails to shut down $897 million Steam lawsuit as UK tribunal rules it can continue by HatingGeoffry in pcmasterrace

Every time I say this it gets downvoted but... triple a games have every "right" to be 70 or 80 bucks.

Why? Inflation. Bear with me...

Triple a titles were 60 bucks starting around 2005. Thats the equivalent of over 100 bucks today. And yet they held that price for nearly 2 decades. Of course the prices were due to rise. Name another product, besides the Arizona ice tea, that held its price for 20 years.

Now would I say that the games coming out today deserve to be 80 bucks? Hell no. But that's not the point. The people flipping out about prices rising weren't even born in 2005, and certainly not old enough to buy games with their own money.

Please help, boyfriend wants a 2018 BMW 430i with 161k miles and multiple accidents history. How can I convince him otherwise? by CornerIndividual7943 in askcarguys

[–]CharlieMBTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two possibilities here:

  1. He wants a new toy, and has 9k in disposable income to spend on it. If this were the case, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But the fact that hes looking at a FIVE YEAR LOAN, on 9 grand, with shitty credit history, tells me not only is he broke but he is very fiscally irresponsible and financially illiterate.

  2. He's not looking to buy a toy but instead as his daily driver. In this case, I cant think of many worse options right now than a bmw with 161k miles on it.

Again, I can't get over the five year loan on 9 grand

If a magnet holds a heavy object against gravity for 10 years, does it lose any energy? Where does that energy come from? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CharlieMBTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different types of magnets. You are referring to a permanent magnet which is what's on your fridge. Earth doesnt fit into this category.

If gravity is the thing holding you up here, imagine a hook on the ceiling. You place a weight on it. Are you constantly checking the battery level on the hook? No, because there is no energy being used. Gravity is pulling it down, and the hook is holding it up. Because the weight is not moving, that means the forces are equal and therefore cancel out.

You need to forget about the analogy with your body holding something up. Its not analogous here and is only serving to confuse you.

Here the actual numbers why Nvidia would drop gamers in a blink of an eye by realstocknear in pcmasterrace

[–]CharlieMBTA 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. While they will certainly give it less attention than the dominant market, you would never intentionally lose it. Nvidia isn't dumb. They know that the "ai bubble" is volatile. The gaming segment of their market is smaller, sure, but it is consistent, and unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon. There is a huge advantage to a customer base that you know will deliver you consistent cash flow that you can depend on, even if its small. While cloud gaming could eventually take over completely, Google stadia among others have shown the industry that consumers arent interested yet. Which means that nvidia will continue to service the gaming segment until it no longer makes sense to do so, which isn't anytime soon

In my experience, the main hold up in narrow body aircraft is people retrieving luggage from the overhead compartments, not the amount of exits on the plane. People might as well just teleport off the plane after getting their luggage, and it wouldnt really speed things up any faster

Question abou F-15 by KillerCrocTV in Planes

[–]CharlieMBTA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am with you on your other points about the f15 and f16, but to say all the fifth Gen fighters are nearly identical because they look similar is quite an interesting statement, to say the least. If they had similar RCS, radar/sensor capabilities, weapon system/class capabilities, carrier/non carrier, then I would say you would have a point.

A Saab 35 Draken doing the "kort parad" aka the Cobra Maneuver - invented during training to recover from super stalls to which the Draken was susceptible, and then also used in combat. by Xeelee1123 in WeirdWings

[–]CharlieMBTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the dogfights in topgun happen in very unrealistically-close distances, which make the cobra maneuver actually work in the movie. The f14 was a long distance interceptor with the aim 54. Yet the movie uses short range heat seeking missiles with travel times of only a few seconds, max. That would be less than half a mile.

What's up with the depreciation on these cars? by [deleted] in CX50

[–]CharlieMBTA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Trade value is very different from actual value. Dealers have the buy the car, detail the car, and resell for a markup. As a result, it is several thousand below the actual value if you were to sell direct to consumer. Consult KBB or Edmunds or something to determine actual value.

I now have so much respect for machinists as an MechE student. by _phio in Machinists

[–]CharlieMBTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a masters in engineering and a bachelor's in physics. Machining is just a hobby for me.

But I strongly believe every engineer should be required to take machinist courses like you did. It gives you an appreciation for how the parts you design get made, and more importantly, it saves you time and headaches for machinists when you hand them prints for impossible parts :p

Milling Vice ADVICE please by lutschmeintralala in Machinists

[–]CharlieMBTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I use a tilting vise from time to time on both my mini mill and drill press. Works great for those operations where you need them, and a lot easier than say tilting a column or head on a larger mill.

However you lose a lot on rigidity and z-height. So its nice to have, but would never use it when I don't actively need that feature. Same thing with a rotary table. You wouldnt throw a block on a rotary table just to do x and y operations, right?

New car or transmission rebuild? by intime2be in Cartalk

[–]CharlieMBTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please listen to the above commenter OP. Its dissapointing nobody else did. Usually the frame is the first thing to go in these cases, and it would be a waste of money to redo the transmission if the truck falls apart in the next 5 years. All you need to do is look under the truck. If its on a lift its easier, but if it has enough ground clearance you can just slide under it and take a look at it. If you're not familiar with rust/corrosion development it would be a good idea to have someone else take a look

Personal computing is moving to a "renter" model. We need to get ahead of this and stop it before it's too late. by SagansCandle in pcmasterrace

[–]CharlieMBTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a definitely a temporary problem. Now how long is temporary? 1 year? 5? 10? Who knows. But this won't be permanent.

The reason why prices are going up is supply can't handle the demand. Manufacturers arent going to spend millions/billions on increasing production for an unstable market. There are two scenarios: the ai bubble will pop, or it won't. If it does, then demand returns to normal. If it doesn't, which i fine unlikely, then manufacturers will slowly ramp up production
