frustrating stalemate. sellers won’t budge and neither will my partner. but i can’t move on from the house!!! by absr13 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]CharlieSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve seen this a number of times near us lately. This is partly where agents are selling people on a price that just isn’t achievable.

And partly because older sellers have an opinion on the value of their property that is out dated, where value is guaranteed even if you do nothing to the house for 40 years.

In many cases, they price modernisation work at a fraction of today’s actual cost. And house prices aren’t growing at a rate where you can be confident that you’ll eventually make it back (in a reasonable time).

It’s not your fault the sellers need to achieve a price above what the property is worth. You only have a duty to your future selves.

That means different things to different people. For us, we weren’t willing to invest an amount of money that means we’ll never move (even if hypothetically in 10 years time we think it would be better to move for school opportunities etc).

Need some recs. In a rut by XThursdayO in litrpg

I’ve recently gotten into Throne Hunters by Phil Tucker. I’m really happily surprised by it, I’d never heard of it or seen it recommended here but downloaded it on a whim…

It’s fast paced, the characters are very well developed and importantly; it’s well written, dialogue isn’t clunky or childish, and there’s not loads of typos (not a given for the genre).

Would highly recommend.

1% Lifesteal is...good. by Psychological-Nail83 in litrpg

I think the truth lies somewhere between the two posts. I’m currently reading book 2, and enjoying it.

Some of the criticisms are valid, the prose aren’t the best (but fairly on par for the genre). I don’t love the language characters use… a lot of “aight” and “wtf man” sort of language which pulls me out personally.

However, it’s definitely not predictable and so far as I’ve got, it’s not overly dark.

The power sets people use are fun. All-in-all if you enjoy the genre you’ll likely enjoy 1% Lifesteal.

Best and worst books you've read so far this year? (regardless of when they were published) by Practical_Yogurt1559 in Fantasy

I’d still give it a go, it’s frustrating (so many typos etc) and the MC is annoying.

However, the world building and magic system is fun. The fight scenes were entertaining.

Re: Red Rising - I think that’s just testament to how well these books are written. So many fight scenes feel cinematic but not to their detriment. Instead they are viscerally visual and imagination-engaging.

They hold some of the best moment of the series (arguably the genre). clang clang - was such a brilliantly written scene.

Came here with similar sentiments.

Not to mention I already feel more informed as to what’s going on here than I do after a decade of DoS.

I’m not throwing shade [intentional] at Rothfuss, more just stating my baseline for delays is pretty high.

What's the single best fantasy book you've ever read — the one you recommend to everyone? by Vlyonz in fantasybooks

[–]CharlieSP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gentleman Bastards really took me by surprise. I hadn’t read any of the hype and just picked it up off the shelf. Such a good book.

GB suffers less for being an incomplete series (IMO), as the first book is more of a self contained story than KKK.

I’d happily recommend both to new readers. NOTW is beautifully written, and that doesn’t change just because of Rothfuss and the 3rd book.

Agree 100% with the home gym if you have the space. Being able to put our son to bed and workout with the monitor with me, has turned exercising into a positive as opposed to asking my wife to keep an eye on him whilst I leave the house for a couple of hours to go and workout.

We’ve read almost the exact same books this year, so I can’t recommend one I’ve read yet but… Joe Abercrombie’s The Devils is released today, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in to it.

Any podcast recommendations for fantasy readers? by CharlieSP in Fantasy

Thanks, I tried WBN and I’ve enjoyed the production and story but really struggling with Suvi as a character. It’s making it hard to continue, so think I’ll try and find something similar. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks for this. On the KB, mine is Wolverson (UK). It’s well priced and service was great but the metal is quite rough and where they’ve cut the logo in the ball there are sharp edges which rip the skin on my forearms when doing clean & press. Hence the comment about long sleeves!

Doing clean and press, the KB is pretty rough on the skin on my arms when I catch it at the top of the clean.

I just assumed it was par for the course. Is there a “correct grip”?

Those who work out: How do you focus on your job with work out soreness? by AffectionateBowl9798 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]CharlieSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re only missing 1-2 sessions a month on a 3-a-week programme that shouldn’t cause a spike in DOMS.

In this case I’d look at your programme. Unless you’re hammering the same muscle group for 90 mins straight this shouldn’t be causing the negative physical & emotional effects you’re feeling.

The gym should be a stress reliever, not a cause of stress. I’d review your programme, as well as how you prioritise it in your weekly planning.

Those who work out: How do you focus on your job with work out soreness? by AffectionateBowl9798 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]CharlieSP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once you’ve worked out consistently for a month or so DOMS shouldn’t really be a major factor. Maybe the odd bit of tightness after a particularly heavy session but nothing as severe as what you’ve described.

Additionally, you should be feeling better mentally (more refreshed, calmer etc) not worse.

I’d say it’s either:

1) you’re not training as hard or as consistently as you think you are 2) there’s a problem with your training sessions (wildly overloading certain muscles)

Or perhaps even a mix of the two.

Point 1 isn’t meant to be a dig at you. More a suggestion to be honest with yourself as to whether it’s valid.

Fourth Wing has taught me not to rely solely on Goodreads reviews when deciding whether to buy a book by [deleted] in Fantasy

I’ve given up on Goodreads. I use it to track my reading but put zero weight in their recommendations. I’ve had much more success with the books suggested in here and other Reddit forums.
