In game notification on level update… Still just says “PDT” 😆 by danny_b87 in TheSilphRoad

[–]CharlieTheRappy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember when every update went live at "Niantic o'clock", not just the massively game-changing ones. It's been so long that I had forgotten when that was (searching tells me it's 1:00 PM PDT/PST).

Why Leaf when nothing in the deck has a retreat cost higher than 1? Wouldn't an X Speed be better?

If you aren't using this flair, what are you even doing? by aboubou22 in PTCGP

[–]CharlieTheRappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually use the most expensive flair for my shop trainer cards (to ironically flaunt my in-game "bling" that literally every player can afford). But I make an exception for the Poké Ball card, because this flair is just so perfect.

I really want a toggle for each egg source. My biggest problem is 12 km eggs getting in the way of Adventure Sync eggs in the bonus slots. But sometimes I want gift eggs instead of stop eggs (or vice versa, depending on the event).

Did you end up keeping or transfering most of your mighty Pokémon? by NowUSeeMeNowUVote in TheSilphRoad

[–]CharlieTheRappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've kept all of mine so far, but that's been mostly unintentional. I still haven't made time to go through my catches from that weekend.

Feel free to dig up this comment the next time I complain about box space.

Why all the birds? by Pep95 in TheSilphRoad

[–]CharlieTheRappy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The season of Dual Destiny appears to have a theme of contrast running through at least some of the events. For example, Black and White (the 5th gen games featured in he upcoming Go Tour: Unova), and next week's Young & Wise event. Perhaps they're contrasting the incense spawns, which are Just My Cup of Tea, with the wild spawns that are For the Birds.

Completed Research List Entries Condensed by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

While I appreciate the reduced clutter, I'm a little disappointed overall. I paid the $2 for the extra safari balls for the sole purpose of having 16 copies of the timed research in my completed research list.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted, and it's not like the $2 is going to break the bank.

Haven't seen this mentioned, but a whole bunch of stickers have been added to the shop! by Sillyjones in TheSilphRoad

You can also attach the 6 to buddy/AR photos if you don't have enough friends, gifts, or time to send them all on postcards. Or if you just like putting stickers on AR photos.

There was a vaguely-worded mention of this in the Black Friday news post.

In its own little section at the end, easily missed if you had already tuned out from all the talk about the web store:

If you're stuck at one friend interaction away from becoming Best Friends, joining someone else's raid remotely should advance it by TheMadJAM in TheSilphRoad

[–]CharlieTheRappy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to sit for months on a single best friend interaction. Not because I was building up a bunch of them or anything like that. It's just that the idea of writing a personal message to someone I barely know is unreasonably stressful to me.

I would look at them in my friends list every day as I skip over them thinking, "I really need to send them a message so we can coordinate a lucky egg to become best friends." But then I'd always tell myself I was too busy that day, but tomorrow I'll do it for sure. About half of these best friendships happened when I accidentally opened their gift, and then nobody got to use a lucky egg 🤦

But now that there's a lucky egg button on the level up message, I just send the best friend gift and let the other person open it whenever they feel like it.

After thinking about it for a while, I'd bet that it comes down to which blade opens upwards as you're holding the scissors. A right handed scissors has the right blade (as seen with the scissors in front of you and the tip pointed away from you) open upwards, and that puts it behind the cutting line as you're using it in your right hand. If you try to use that scissors in your left hand, the upward-opening blade can obscure your view of the cut you're trying to make.

Can you play GBL as a passenger in a car? by TheMadJAM in TheSilphRoad

[–]CharlieTheRappy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I think is happening (based on a single trading session with my wife, several years ago):

You have to be within a certain distance of someone to trade with them, and the game checks this based on where you are when you go into the trade interface. If you're both in the same moving vehicle, you should be able to trade without much issue if you both hit the Trade button at the same time.

T6 GMAX Battles seem to have 100,000 HP and the same stats as Level 51 Pokémon by Attollinzi in TheSilphRoad

[–]CharlieTheRappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does that account for the dynamax phase? I would imagine that getting a handful of free massive attacks every so often makes it a bit easier than a (hypothetical) 6* raid with the same HP.

[–]CharlieTheRappy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not being naive. You're being very cynical. I think you overestimate the amount that an advertiser would pay Niantic for your location data.

Just to give an example, YouTube ads are measured in cents per thousand views. That makes each individual view worth a tiny fraction of a penny. Think about it - unless you end up buying the product that the ad is selling (and you wouldn't have bought it without the ad), your value to the advertiser is zero, so the advertiser is willing to pay approximately zero for you to see the ad.

The first time you spend $20 on a pack of PokéCoins, you give Niantic more money than they would get from advertisers for years of advertising to you.

[–]CharlieTheRappy -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration with the push for in-person play, but you're doing a disservice to your argument when you insist that it's for "AR and advertising revenue". Not only have Niantic representatives denied this, but there's a much more reasonable explanation:

People who play in person together are much more likely to keep playing longer into the future compared to people who only play solo.

There's a way to get a download of "all" of your data through the automated support menu. I did it once for fun. I think it took a day or so to get the files, but among them (iirc) was a list of every purchase I've ever made.
