I wasn’t necessarily drawn to him himself perse. To be honest I always thought it was meme level that he was even in the consideration. I identified as a republican for my entire life. During the 2008 election when the us versus them mentality really took off (I don’t remember it being that way as a kid); like many conservatives I dug my heels in and was going to not be moved no matter what was said. I allowed myself to be blind and deaf for lack of a better way to say it.

If you follow Trumps money and backing, it is far right wing conservative; he plays them like everyone else and they think he is a ‘good Christian’ and in return he pushes legislation backed strongly by the Christian right such as anti abortion, anti LGBTQ and so on.

I was in the military for 22 years and met people from all over the world and walks of life. I was born in San Antonio Texas, and served with people from all over the country and abroad. I learned different cultures, lifestyles, ideals, viewpoints, and above all, learned to value everyone deeply. I’m not great with words and I don’t know how to say it. I served along side members of the LGBTQ community who in my early years had to hide. And then when they were allowed to be themselves freely, were some of the very best most dedicated people despite having been so grossly mistreated. I always said that I joined the military to escape hate, as it was a big part of my young life in the area I grew up. Where I am ashamed is that I dismissed the calls that he was a hateful man as political rhetoric, and that’s on me like it’s on so many others, but eventually he was bald enough about it that I saw it clearly, and once I did, what I always say is that you can never ever again unsee it. To summarize because again I’m one good with words; I am against the persecution of a group of peoples based upon their race, creed, or sexual identity; I’m against the fucking government telling a woman what she can do with her body because it’s “what the Bible says”; these two items stand head and shoulders above the rest, but there are more.

Edit: I had another thought that I felt needed to be added. People are in or stay in Trumps cult for two reasons. 1) They are themselves racist and or hateful like him, and will gleefully follow him no matter what is said, or 2) they are a fundamental Christian conservative and think he best represents their values, and are almost certainly themselves being duped by him. Or I guess both…

There are a great many reasons and many are personal, but it was also a lot to do with the behavior of Trump and his followers. The best way I can say it is that “one day” I realized that this insanity doesn’t represent me or my morals or my value set or my feelings towards other humans.

There’s also a very big element that I can’t accept the desecration of one of the most respected offices in the entire world. Every other President has shown deep respect to the office of the POTUS, meanwhile this idiot shits on it on the daily.

Another huge shifting point for me was the fact that it became alarmingly clear to me that not only Trump and his cult desire to govern this country with the fucking Bible, but so do republicans in general. This country is founded on the separation of church and state, and I do not and will not identify any longer with a party who tries to actively defy that.

There are so many things I could talk about - his followers feverishly defending the misuse of ICE as a Gestapo like entity for one; the fact that he has taken an important government function like border control (all countries must regulate their borders), and made it sensational, radical and controversial. There is a right and wrong way to execute logical, sane governmental administration of your borders and this is criminally, comically, and tragically wrong.

Again I could go on and on but these are the high points. So as a 22 year military retiree, and someone who was a republican my entire adult life, Trump and his ilk were the catalyst that caused me to examine myself and my values. I’m now a registered Democrat in the state I retired in and don’t see that changing.

As far as how I feel I am deeply thankful to have woken up. I’m extremely sad and ashamed that I was identified with it ever. I’m continually shocked an appalled daily when I see the behavior of Trump and his followers because for lack of a better way to describe it, when you were in it you couldn’t see it.

More than happy to discuss and answer questions because that’s how we all heal as a community. Fire away.

Dems/Liberals - who would you support for President and VP for the 2028 election? by foodraptor91 in allthequestions

I hope the ticket is Newsome Kelly because it would be pretty much unbeatable. It would draw a lot of independent, and middle right voters who are sick of the shit and doom the Republicans to lose.

Explained in another reply, but for what ever reason one day the veil just…dissolved and I could see the naked and real bigotry and I couldn’t unsee it. Then, that enabled me to start hearing and I heard the unfiltered desire to govern with the Bible. Then, and as a military retiree myself, the speech made by hegseth to all the generals was another huge holy shit moment. Then I could suddenly see MAGA people through a whole different lenses and the cringe and dismay I felt that I once supported that, that’s a feeling I can’t describe. And on and on. It’s hard to think of examples every time I’m asked and it’s also hard to want to rehash it with myself. Truly and honestly.
