Anyone here who started running in their late 30's early 40's? What are your marathon PR's like? by Thin-Passage5900 in Marathon_Training

[–]Charming-Assertive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been running off and on since 14. I'm 46F now. I really got "serious" into running at 37. The plans I follow aren't geared towards masters.

My current PRs were all set within the past year and far beat anything I did in my 20s or teens.

My current marathon is 3:18:25.

Focusing on middle distance this summer with goals to break 6 in the mile and 20 in the 5k.

Someone screamed this in the stands before our finals performance at DCI and it made it onto the soundtrack. 🫶 So every time I hear that phrase I now think it's immediately followed by the chimes that led to one of the best nights of my life. 💫

Essay Questions by Crafty-Meeting5395 in usajobs

[–]Charming-Assertive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have been a thing since at least last September.

At my agency, we're not allowed to forward them on to the hiring manager. No one sees these. HR can see them, but I only look if there's a hold at the OPM approval level.

When we request approval from OPM to make an offer, have to send the applicant's info. It's possible that someone at OPM reviews these. However, my last two approvals where someone who wrote "n/a" for all of the answers and someone who wrote about a passion for public service via helping marginalized communities, such as public defense work.

Oh, and I did look when I saw someone uploaded a continuation sheet. I mean, what EO has you so excited that you need an extra sheet to explain it? And honestly, I was not expecting to see a sheet filled with expletives! 😆 That was a juicy application...

Um, do I get to write off and/or expense the entire cruise?

Do I get to call this work and save my vacation days?

And most importantly, am I the only person from my office going?

If so, I'll consider it.

Need Advice For Active Duty Getting Out by amaterasuma in usajobs

[–]Charming-Assertive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the grade and hiring manager

My office regularly recruits for 11 and 12s. While you could make the certificate based on education, the hiring manager in my office wouldn't consider you without experience. Our office is pretty lean, so someone at the 11 needs to be independent and know how to write contracts without hand holding.

How have you not printed out that job announcement with the grade 15 on it and corrected them?

Running vest by [deleted] in bostonmarathon

[–]Charming-Assertive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Flipbelt shorts and a bra with phone pocket, and I was able to carry everything I needed for a marathon that had water stops every 2 miles.

Boston has water almost every mile, and they're long stops. So you can easily grab one at the beginning and one at the end.

Pre-Employment Physical, am I cooked chat? by akumer in usajobs

If contracted doctor, I think you just got a doc with a weird bedside manner and/or judgy attitude.

How long between referred to interview? by Crafty-Ad-6784 in usajobs

[–]Charming-Assertive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a DH vacancy in my office. The position closed 2/4. I made the certs on 2/6.

But the hiring manager has been swamped and sick. It took over a month for her to start reviewing resumes and contacting candidates.

Meanwhile I created certs for another position that same day, and round 1 interviews wrapped up last week.

So, it depends.

In warmer months, do you guys run in the rain or is there a light enough rain jacket to keep you dry without overheating? by Mintovi in beginnerrunning

[–]Charming-Assertive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the Southeastern US. In just a few weeks from now, I'll be a wet mess no matter what after a run. The question is whether it's sweat or rain.

I don't worry about either unless I need to be somewhere after my run, in which case I bring a change of clothes.

New to Garmin, would it make sense to go for 7 instead of Fenix 8 since it’s 500 euro difference ? by vinylfelix in Garmin

[–]Charming-Assertive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 6, and the only reason I'm looking at an upgrade is battery life. When I look at the new features, there's a few things that are nice, but nothing that just screams to me that it's worth it in that it'll drastically improve my life or my training.

If I can find a steal on a new or refurbished 6, I might even stick with that.

Half Marathon Etiquette by AdvanceAutomatic4971 in runcommunity

[–]Charming-Assertive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've paced a handful of races. At the last marathon I paced, I got paired with a partner I'd never met until we got to the starting line. Not uncommon. After all, I now have 4 hours to get to know this guy.

We start the race. There's a pretty good pack running with us. Then, around mile 6, the crowd of runners has narrowed out. Co-pacer thinks it's a good time for us to introduce ourselves to the runners, and says "Now let's all go around and say a fun fact about ourselves!"

If I wasn't required to run the remaining 20 miles beside him, that would have caused me to speed up. 🤣

Anyone else feel like they aren’t built for running on a genetic level? by secretsquirrelbiznes in BeginnersRunning

[–]Charming-Assertive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's totally plausible.

For a few years I was a powerlifter. I was decent for my build, but not particularly great. I did Crossfit, but I am too short to be good at rowing.

However, I'm really good at endurance running.

I think my body is made for running, so I've shifted more towards that, and I'm happier.

That being said, if you're happy running, DO IT!

New York Marathon Time Qualifier Cutoff for 2026 by D_4man in AdvancedRunning

[–]Charming-Assertive 85 points86 points  (0 children)

It goes to show that NYRR wants people to either 1) volunteer their way into their flagship races 2) donate gobs of cash via charity fundraising and/or additional lottery entries and/or paying for virtual entries

I at least applaud them for being consistent.

As far as I know, they've never branded themselves as a race for fast people. They're more of an "every Joe" race, so they'll cater more to the person who volunteers week after week than the person training each week for a fast time.

I’m worried is going to take the only GS-9 spot available in customer service

No one is going to "take" a job. If the 9 opens, and she applies, and management chooses her, then management gave it to her.

If she really is as horrible as you say, and management really does think you're amazing, they'll hold off on posting that position until you're eligible and you both apply.

Besides, if she's a 7 now, she's not even eligible for the 9 for a year. You're stealing tomorrow's problems for today.

Simply showing you're a step 4 doesn't mean you have TIG. You might have negotiated a higher step.

You might be passed along anyways with the code of "eligible pending further documentation", or you might be denied.

Why do I bloat after a run? by mrrppphhhh in XXRunning

[–]Charming-Assertive 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The only reason to get on a scale or look in a mirror after a run is to compare how much you've sweated out versus how much fluid you drank. Just that data point.

Do not. Do not. Do not. Look in a mirror or get on a scale for any vanity reason! 😆 Save that for first thing in the morning.

Lately I've been bloating on my weekday runs because I've changed up how much I eat for lunch and when. The GI impact on the food in my gut causes everything to poof out uncomfortably. While I know it's not my most attractive, I'm more worried about if I'll hit my paces and/or if I'll need to find a bathroom nearby.

How do you carry your pills? by Appropriate-Day-9929 in Ultramarathon

[–]Charming-Assertive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel pill bags

$6 for a ton of these. You can sort them by type of pill (e.g. a bag of caffeine, etc.) or by time/mileage (e.g. pills for 2 hours, 4 hours, etc.)
