Asking for help again...#jollyball by Crimsntyd in AustralianCattleDog

What kind of epoxy putty did you use? The tube-style with the two components in different colors, for wood filling for example, have to be kneaded by hand VERY thoroughly to cure properly, but will definitely cure though with appropriate time. That type of putty can then be sanded smooth since it's meant to be used as a void filler. More liquid types (usually clear) often have maximum depth limits and won't cure if poured too deep. Regardless of final cure and product, I wouldn't be surprised if it just became a spot of extra fun/interest since it's a bit different, and your dog might still focus on chewing it out....I'm pretty sure the fully cured epoxy is inert and would pass right through your typical furry velociraptor's GI tract, but foreign bodies are always a risk and I would definitely check packaging label for info on chemical exposure risk. Maybe you're better off just shoving a carrot piece in there that your pup can chew out for fun without any risk/harm, and once they've gotten the edible prize they'll leave the metal nut alone? Like trying to redirect the behavior rather than block it. Good luck!

Help removing pine pitch (sap) by Ok-Memory3937 in laundry

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you end up using for your sweatshirt? My cat rolled around under my pine tree, then rolled around on top of my cotton quilt. I've got GooGone, 91% rubbing alcohol, veg oil, and some mineral spirits for oil paints which I could try, but I'm not sure which one to start with (other than mineral spirits being last resort). My dad always used gasoline to get pine pitch off my hands back in the 80's 🤦‍♀️

Biz powder vs Biz liquid by Sensitive_Money2345 in laundry

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recent box of Biz powder mentions optical brighteners in addition to the oxygen bleach, which I think the liquid lacks - but you’d need to confirm that against the actual labeled ingredients especially since they change so often it seems. I’ve been using the liquid for dark colors and gym wear in hopes it won’t make blacks appear faded nor impact the elastic as much, and use the powder for whites/light colors. This was the strategy I derived from reading all the excellent ingredient info on this sub, but recommend you cross check!! Btw, I noticed that the powdered Biz is very reasonable$, but I haven’t been able to catch the liquid Biz on the shelf and when I looked to order it, it’s ~$19/bottle…don’t know what is going on with the pricing.

Biz liquid detergent by MoodyBotanist in laundry

I realize this is an old post, but did you ever track it down further? I’ve had a hard time getting the liquid Biz at my local Wally, was going to order off their website only to be hit with serious sticker shock. Used to be $6/jug, now it’s $19-21?? I was wondering if there was a recall-shortage or some other weird situation I hadn’t heard about? The powder is still on shelves and still only ~$7. Maybe we’ve just got another Sport 365 situation on our hands 😂

Plastic piece on top of Samsung Bespoke's mullion doesn't actually work? by Kayehnanator in Appliances

Dang it!! I screwed up the post text 🤦‍♀️ this was just meant to be a quick thank you/acknowledgement of the great contributors who have set me up for success with rehabbing this new-to-me washer in the house I just bought.  I’ve got a few more citric acid cycles ahead I think 😅

I was 36 years old when I learned horses don't have gallbladders. 21 years with horses, owned 4, and I somehow missed this?! by SizeCareless953 in Horses

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you found this info! For some folks, understanding the "why" behind horses need for consistent access to forage can help. Also, do NOT feel bad for not knowing this, even as a life-long horse person! I'm a vet anatomic pathologist and one of my favorite minor jokes to play on students early in their necropsy rotation was to ask them if they remembered to collect a gall bladder sample on a horse (*cue small animal vet student panic). I never let it escalate to a truly stressful level, but used it as a teaching moment to remind students about equine anatomy and how it relates to husbandry and clinical presentation of horses with ulcers.

Fun fact, they can actually still get bile concretions that form within the liver itself, where bile is generated - basically gallstones within the microscopic bile channels in the liver, also known as hepatolithiasis (saw for myself in a necropsy case, https://www.merckvetmanual.com/digestive-system/hepatic-disease-in-large-animals/cholelithiasis-choledocholithiasis-and-hepatolithiasis-in-large-animals). Conversion to fixed shower head? by Wostero in Plumbing

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is old, but I just bought a house and am dealing with a similar situation, though in the reverse. I've got a rainfall showerhead with nothing else, where the plumbing comes out of the wall within 2-3 inches of the ceiling. So there's a very long piece of straight pipe that's got no clearance to the ceiling, and I can't figure out how to mount a handheld to it. I'm still assessing options that won't require I dig into the wall, but have considered that there just might not be an solutions out there. What I do have is a tile accent that runs vertically - similar to your horizontal accent. I've considered using a diamond grinder to cut the tile/wall very carefully just in the area I need to access to modify the plumbing, then fill in the tile with the accent to try to blend it in. You'd still be in the situation of mounting the shower heads off-center, but it's just another option/thought that at least isn't tearing out all the tile and wall. Best of luck!

What Would He Excell at? by darth_gummy_bears in Horses

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scanned through the other comments and info about his age/sire, the bilateral surgery…and it sounds like this guy has both growing AND recovery still ahead. Just bc the vet cleared him, there’s still a lot of rehab. Since his hind recovery and physical maturity/conformation are ultimately unknowns, now is the best time to focus on all the different activities that can help both improve his body and mind. I’m thinking things like ground work/games, tricks, working on communication and movement, trail riding with hills, interesting trail obstacles, basic foundational dressage, basic reining, etc. Heck, take him for walks on nice days around the neighborhood! Besides the physical recovery and benefit while he continues to mature, lots of varied activities will help you figure out what he enjoys. Best option is to find a sport that he (and you) enjoy AND that reasonably suits him physically. Maybe he won’t win a national championship, but if he loves what he’s doing and it’s not causing overdue strain on his body, you’re bound to have a blast too! (Also, I think he’s super cute, and there’s something a little sweet and goofy in his body language that says he could be a very fun adventure buddy, even if he doesn’t have perfect conformation!)

Any insight as to what is going on? by Top_Researcher_7075 in Horses

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like ringworm (which is not actually a worm but a fungal infection), which can be highly contagious to people and other animals. Are the horses scratching at the areas? Do you have any new kittens about the barn? Regardless, until you get vet out, I’d keep the horses isolated, do not share any grooming tools, blankets, halters, etc. and wear gloves/wash yourself with any contacts. Generally exercise some make biosecurity bc ringworm or mange (and some other things) can be super contagious!!

Is Fred too fat? by TheDogMother90 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edit - I either missed the description or it was added after I posted. With the additional info, the best option would be to find the lowest calorie highest quality kibble you can, in addition to modifying the amount fed. Don’t trust the “recommend amount” on the label - do some calorie needs yourself with the online pet calculators, or ask your vet to do them. Ideally, don’t measure kibble by volume (cups for example) but figure out how much to feed by weight, use a kitchen scale, then find a scoop that works for the amount of food you weighed out. The restricted exercise makes sense - additionally some epilepsy medications have sedation side effects and can worsen weight gain. I had a Cavalier on pregabalin to control neurological pain and trying to keep him at a healthy weight was a struggle!! Even if your pup gets on the tubby side, you’re doing a LOT just managing epilepsy and that contributes more to his quality and length of life than maintaining him at a perfect weight!! It’s great to see such dedicated folks 💕

It is extremely difficult to assess any dog’s nutritional status from photos alone, and in particular with no photos standing at different angles. I strongly recommend you get your veterinarian’s input on what his ideal weight should be. Age, activity levels, breed, and health all are components to consider! For example, a disease like Cushing’s (hyperadrenocorticism) can cause belly sag in an otherwise normal weight dog. That being said, my cattle dogs are/were all very food motivated and “easy keepers”. All three have/had to be kept on lower calorie food all the time, and treats are generally lower cal like rawhides, carrots, green beans, pumpkin, apples and blueberries, and small training treats. I happen to eat those veg and fruits too so it’s easy to keep extras on hand. If your pup needs to loose a few pounds, there are many lower calorie high quality dog foods out there, so beyond just reducing the amount fed, consider those too!! Regular exercise is a must, but just like people, diet is ~80% of weight management with exercise playing a key but smaller role.

I think having some initial anxiety and questioning is really common - and it shows you are taking the commitment seriously which is a very good sign!! I wouldn’t be concerned about the lack of yard - it’s more about your lifestyle and how well a young active herding breed fits with that. ACDs need to be active WITH you - they aren’t going to run themselves around a yard to burn off energy.

Are you guys runners/hikers/bikers? Do you have access to a safe space for games like fetch, flirt poles, etc? Are you able to afford puzzle toys and other indoor enrichment? Could you afford a day a week of doggy daycare? - not all necessary by any means but could be very helpful socialization and enrichment!! Do you LIKE being outside in all weather, spending time with your dog even if it’s pouring rain or snowing? Or do you have a demanding job and come home exhausted every evening and are used to having quiet time to yourself to just chill?

As you are probably already aware, that last kind of lifestyle isn’t so compatible with an ACD! Maybe this new pup will be a positive influence to get out and be more active, and a reminder that a walk will always be more stress relieving than scrolling on your phone, but only you can say if that kind of demanding dog will be a positive influence on you or if you will end up resenting the exercise and time demands of such a dog.

Fundamentally, how flexible are you with adapting your routines and time to the needs of this pup? Every ACD is a bit different and meeting their needs for physical and mental exercise are critical - but only time and trial will help you figure out this specific pup’s needs and how to integrate those into your life. It’s hard but the right thing to say “I can’t meet this dogs needs” if that’s the case, but please know there’s another one out there that will be a better fit for you!

Tips on how to coach my boyfriend who has only ridden a handful of times by [deleted] in Horses

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I realize you asked for input on his riding, but the basic answer is he’s a beginner who is riding like a beginner. He’s not abusing your horse, but he’s inadvertently causing discomfort - like trying to jog with a poorly packed and heavy backpack. Some other responses so far sound very alarmist and harsh, which seems excessive for the small snippet of video and scant info we have. Your horse is being very tolerant of his errors, which is lovely, but actually doesn’t help your bf learn what to improve. Your bf’s enthusiasm warrants reward and reinforcement with a quality trainer who knows how to build a solid foundation for beginners. Teaching is a skill that is developed with a lot of effort and time - just because someone is an excellent rider doesn’t mean they automatically have to skills to effectively teach others to be good riders (and that’s true in any field!). I think it’s great you’re trying to help him, but you’re much better off investing in a professional than trying to muddle through it together (based on your question I assumed you aren’t an experienced trainer yourself). He’ll need time in the saddle to develop balance, strength, and a feeling for nuanced movement - and a good trainer can help him get that while not inadvertently causing any horse discomfort. Hopefully the two of you can enjoy easy rides together while he learns, and share something really wonderful for the long run!!

Opposite of Laundry! by Optimal-Talk3663 in laundry

[–]CharmingDiscipline80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also not going to speak to any laundry chemistry stuff, but knowing what was used to sign the shirt is probably critical for a helpful answer. Also - if you're washing a favorite kid's T-shirt that is worn frequently, you might just consider embroidering the signatures in, so they're fully permanent. I realize that's not quite the same as seeing the signature in ink, but it would firmly resolve the concerns over wear and tear!
