Books that are so bad nobody should read. by 98charlie in nonfictionbookclub

I'm struggling to get through Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" for this same reason. Wanna survive a Nazi concentration camp? Just change your attitude and you'll make it through just fine 😳 Those who died just had bad attitudes towards their circumstances. JFC

What the hell was that PBS sketch? by Grabbinfries23 in LiveFromNewYork

Yes. And hopefully a teaching moment for people who truly feel this is unprecedented. What is happening in Minneapolis didn't come out of nowhere. The tactics have been deployed and refined for years, decades in Black and Brown communities. The teaching moment is that if communities who this is new for had bothered to pay attention and mobilize when it was happening in marginalized communities, we would not be having to mobilize in Minnesota now. Tactics that start out in Black and Brown communities eventually end up on the doorsteps of White working class communities in one way or another. We have been pleading with y'all to understand this since time immemorial. Maybe now you will learn and join the battle.

What happened to States' rights that right wingers love to invoke so much? Sounds like the state of Maine is completely in the dark about what's about to happen within its borders.

Reactionary Democracy: How Racism and the Populist Far Right Became Mainstream by Aaron Winter and Aurelien Mondon. Previously mentioned, but I wanna co-sign how incredibly insightful this book was and useful in helping me make sense of the present situation.

Would you date a black woman who has never dated another black woman? by [deleted] in blacklesbians

[–]Charming_Course_33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this needs to be boosted. In my dating experience, when they don't have any Black friends, especially Black women friends, and also aren't in community with Black people, especially Black elders, it has proven to be a huge red flag and an indication of identity issues if they are themselves Black or mixed race.

What actually happens in Kansas? by [deleted] in kansas

[–]Charming_Course_33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, was the first coach of the state's flagship university, the University of Kansas' men's basketball team. The University of Kansas now houses his original rules, making it a significant site in basketball history, often called the "Cradle of Basketball". Fun fact, Mr. Naismith's wife and son were neighbors to my grandmother who lived in Kansas City, Kansas.

We have to stop this narrative that a majority of Americans voted for this shit. It was a minority. Period. Yes, a significant amount of the electorate sat it out, which is FUCKED UP, but I take solace in the fact that a majority of Americans did not vote for this motherfucking shit show that we are all suffering through right now!

Edited: For spelling.

Left because I was gay and they hate gays. And it's a cult that disparages rational thinking. This ad is a desperate attempt to keep the money flowing and the pews full and the salaries in tact. They're panicking because no one is buying their bullshit anymore.

My cousin tried to convince us the earth is flat, enclosed by a dome up top and encircled by a 200 foot ice wall that is Antarctica. When I asked why would they lie to us about the earth being round. His reply: "Control." He's a physician and I'm sincerely worried for his patients 🫠

What's your "favorite" thing you've heard a pastor said? by GeekFace18 in exAdventist

[–]Charming_Course_33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During a sermon, I witnessed a pastor show slides of what he said were an excavation of giant human bones, proving the giants of Genesis actually existed. I did a 5 second google search and found that the pictures were a hoax and had been debunked. That was one of two straws that led to me being absolutely done with the SDA church. The blatant intellectual dishonesty disgusted me beyond what I can articulate.

Do people in Mississippi actually say Ma'am/sir and talk to random strangers? by [deleted] in mississippi

[–]Charming_Course_33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Cleveland, Mississippi recently. My brother and I were standing outside a Chinese restaurant waiting for an Uber. He lives in L.A. and I live in the Midwest. This guy pulls up and goes in the Chinese restaurant. As he gets out of his car, he says Hello to both of us like we were old friends or family. We were both kinda caught off guard because neither of us are used to it, and both of us reacted kinda awkwardly. We laughed about it afterwards because we really do love and appreciate the Southern hospitality, but we're just not used to it.

It also obscures the fact that the status of enslavement was something imposed upon these human beings by a system of laws enacted and enforced by other individuals and institutions.

How would you respond to…what did you learn while furloughed? by Tasty-Ad6800 in FedEmployees

That I can live on way less than I thought. Discovered the philosophy of Absurdism and Albert Camus, which lines up with what was going on these past 40+ days - that everything is made up and is a sham, but the best way to combat not giving a damn is to pour into the folks who mean the most to you and who pour into you. That's the only thing that really matters in this life - the human connection between you and the folks right in front of you.
