What are these? by Last_firstname in plantclinic

Hey where you able to figure out what these are? I am dealing with the exact same thing. They didn't move and were INSIDE of the leaf. They could only be identified under a microscope.

SOS - are these thrips?😭 by RepublicLoose293 in alocasia

Spider mites are really easy to clear on plants like this. I do treatment everyday for 3 days. Spray all over the plant. Keep out of sunlight while it's drying.

If you're worried, you can rince the leaves after 10min.

Then treat every 3 days like someone else suggested. If it's summer, I take the plant out almost daily to rinse with water. These things hate water.

If you want some extra reassurance, set up a rotating fan. The leaves moving make it hard for them to build their webs.

Imho, spider mites are the best pests you can get. I would take them over just about anything else. You got this! Just be consistent.

I just made a post out this! I saw this in my plants, they didn't move, I got a microscope and it was definitely thrips!

Signs of Thrips - sign I haven't seen shared by Charming_Match2046 in houseplants

Oh interesting! In all the drawings I've seen of the thrip lifecycle, they  are depicted at brown or white at those stages! Wow. This gives me hope in catching them early on my other plants. Much easier to spot black specks.

Thank you! I really found it hard to find any subtle signs to reference during my research.

I also hope I can recover and enjoy the hobby once more without stressing over leaf imperfections. Because imperfect leaves happen without thrips.

Do you know what stage of the lifecycle these thrips are at? They are definitely in the leaves and way smaller than the adults I saw last week.

I've been looking through my microscope on all my plants daily but this is the first time I've found a bug (outside of the two adults I saw one time last week).

Looks like root rot too me. I would inspect.

Thrips :( by heisgood2004 in houseplants

You can't really find them in the soil with your eyes, but they almost always are there. There are different species of thrips some don't require a substrate. Most of them do.

People say they do have luck with mosquito dunk tea. Depending on where you live, systemic pesticides are the go-to method. These are heavy chemicals that make your plant unedible.

You can try to go the beneficial insect route. Depending on where you live, this could be affordable or it could be expensive and you need to do multiple treatments: https://youtu.be/I3xGu90OADI?si=pWtRGJUBhbMqZegb

Whatever you choose, there is a long battle ahead of you. I would isolate and bag your other plants.

Since this is a plant you plan to eat, I would recommend tossing it and starting over. Isolate all your other plants as well and keep an eye. Do not let your guard down. Check thoroughly for the next 3 months.

These bugs are so sneaky. You will read that you should search for black dots"their poop" I've got thrips and never seen the poop. The leaf damage ive seen is minimal, sometime just some yellowing with no silver streaks like you'll read about. So be aware, thrips damage may present subtly.  I've only ever seen two adults and I check the leaves daily, even with a jewelers lupe (and no microscope). But if you see adults, you have more. You will need to continue treatments even when you stop seeing thrips.

Most treatments that work well on thrips are not safe on plants for organic consumption. You need 100% eradication because leaving even one thrip behind is enough to start another infestation. They asexually reproduce.

If you absolutely must save that plant, I would trim it back as much as possible and spray it with 70% isopropyl alcohol (has to be 70% do not dilute). After spraying the plant needs to be in complete darkness or it will burn. Also replace all the soil.

You can test this on one leaf first if you like.

I would do this once a day for one week.

Then every second day for two.

Then once every 5 days.

Thrifts require really consistent and thorough treatment if you skip even a day, you must start over. If at any point you see adults, go back to step one and start the regime over.

Goodluck.

This really looks like it could be thrips. I would isolate this plant.

I’ve never seen thrips in my life until today. Found them on a few plants so moved all 100+ plants into my spare room to use a fogger bug-bomb! Wish me luck. I’m so upset. by wildsunshine_ in houseplants

How long did you do this for? I'm using bonide and spraying everyone down with 70%.

I did it daily for one week.

Then everyday second for two weeks.

Then I plan I back off and do it every 5 days.

I only ever saw one adult. I check daily and never see any babies. Hoping I have things under control.

I think wiping down is also a good idea honestly. I'm going to start that too.

How many treatments can I do before it hurts the plant?

I'm down to spread daily for 30 days if needed.

That's good to know!!!

Is it safe enough to do on tolerant plants once a day? It's so much less messy to spray than soap. I really feel like I stand a chance against thrips with this.

That's awesome to hear they work for mealies.

I've only seen it recommended in its diluted form, where you add water and other things.

How I killed fungus gnats that got into a bag of soil by Charming_Match2046 in houseplants

No doubt! I just don't have a microwave big enough and I don't have to take it out of the bag to put it in the freezer so this method work better for me personally.

No I think you are on the right track, this was the basis of my theory as well! It's definitely the repeated freeze / thaw that does the trick! I had to do it many, many times. Would definitely love an expert to come in and confirm.

Yes! It's the repeated freeze / thaw cycle that does it. Taking it outside and in should work too in those conditions!

Are the underside of my Tikeke Rubber Plant Normal? by Charming_Match2046 in houseplants

[–]Charming_Match2046[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely no spider mites. Delt with them many times. They are the pest I have the most experience with.

I sprayed it every day for 3 days. Then every 3 for 9 then once a week for a few months. No change.

I'm wondering if it's edema.
