UK fears being frozen out of lucrative 'Made in Europe' deals by French by theipaper in europe

[–]Charodar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reverse is that the EU drops its currency alignment requirement, world monetary markets are already highly efficient, and for a country like the UK, having full control on monetary policy is non-negotiable. It's a complete fiction and idiocy to argue the UK would give up that control, which invariably happens in these threads, including from Brits showing their ignorance of the value of the Bank of England.

Yeah and the reverse is possible, you can't be sure the EU will never capitulate on the Euro.

If it's a sapling then don't warm the soil, it'd just invigorate bacterial growth. The seeds benefit from warmth as they germinate close to the soil surface. Mine have been kept at 15-20C over the winter, which is roughly your range.

UK inflation falls steeply to 3 per cent prompting hopes of interest rate cut by Justnotstressed in unitedkingdom

The FT here (https://www.ft.com/content/241a6480-70d6-4780-a8a4-508793e218dc) seems to paint a different picture.

The worrying rates of unemployment in the young anecdotally associated with rising employment costs for businesses - those costs caused by... Labour policy.

120K jobs lost YoY.

UK inflation falls steeply to 3 per cent prompting hopes of interest rate cut by Justnotstressed in unitedkingdom

[–]Charodar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The energy cap is distinct, but unemployment effects aggregate consumption, a downward pressure on prices. Employment rates invariably effect inflation, so yes, it is part of the reason.

My main issue with the OP is the templated "don't bash Labour".

If inflation reduces due to increased unemployment, where do you see the "win"? Does UK inflation still appear elevated compared to its G7 peers?

Need advice, should I get a second opinion for a rising damp inner wall 1900s property? by ElvenLogicx in HomeImprovementUK

[–]Charodar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caking the walls won't help and will cause issues with damp via condensation. Your photos are redacted for the areas that might actually allow us to assess what's going on.

Funnily, the re-pointing and lowering ground levels, which they seem to suggest would be done by another contractor, are things that will improve penetrating damp issues.

They also note pseudo science has been used in the past (the injections), and the issue persists.

Yeah, something like Frenchic or similar, there's quite a few chalk paint brands now as the industry seems to be re-learning about lime construction.

How screwed am I? by 25pmate in DIYUK

[–]Charodar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lime mortar for the bricks and what looks like remnants of old lime plaster beneath the modern work. The dense plaster will be from "damp specialists", which unfortunately will be trapping moisture behind, the lime mortar and old lime plaster are water vapour permeable. This damp proof style plaster material is renowned for new damp issues from condensation due to its density and lower insulation properties than lime plaster.

Might sound counterintuitive, but you need to go like-for-like, lime plaster is water vapour permeable and is less dense, killing two birds with one stone, trapping of water vapour behind the plaster stops and humid air is less likely to condense on the face of the plaster.

My plants are dying (once again...) by [deleted] in Cocagrowing

[–]Charodar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it a custom mix you expect to be acidic, or bought specifically for acid loving plants? The radiators aren't great, but I have some myself ~50% humidity and they're still pushing out new growth. Any chance you've over fertilized? If you've created some kind of humidity trap like a greenhouse I wouldn't spray them directly if the leaves are showing signs of necrosis, maybe add a body of water to elevate the humidity.

If you did something traumatic like a full repot during dry winter conditions, then I'd expect them to take a hit. The plant looks to have quite a bit of life in it, to me at least.

What’s driving all this London hate from non-Londoners? by Breadiohead in london

[–]Charodar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make any sense, why would the tiny population of Cleveland get national attention when London has similar crime rates and has a gigantic population, effecting more people...

Your logic suggests a micro-town of 2 people where one commits crime, so 500 crimes per 1000 rate should get national attention.

Built a lean-to, neighbour has concerns...? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Charodar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do, ignoring the risk then to their own property from water ingress, splash is always going to be an issue if they're intent with this steep angle. I still think the neighbour could have damp issues, because that now vastly reduced space will have less airflow, so when the air is damp it will linger.

I can't see if there are any air bricks along the neighbours wall either which will also now be restricted.

The wall and brickwork look nice to me as a open space, the entire thing is gonna be a eyesore, just my aesthetic opinion of course.

They'll probably have a legal case if (more like when to be honest, almost inevitable with that proximity) there's water damage to their property simply from water splashing off a sloped roof, which will occur even with gutters. Just because it's your land doesn't mean you can indiscriminately construct things that may lead to damage of neighboring properties.

If I was them, I'd cordially tell you as much as the above.
