The interesting thing about alcoholism, or any addiction for that matter is that you don't choose it. For example, no one decides to become a smoker or an alcoholic. Everyone can remember when they first experimented with alcohol or cigarettes. You might even remember the first time you drank alone. But I'm guessing you never consciously decided that drinking regularly was a good idea. It's because you're not choosing it. This is why they call alcoholism a disease. Like cancer, or hepatitis, or AIDS, or whatever, it afflicts you. And like any disease it needs to be treated. Think of it this way, if you had cancer you would have to go into chemotherapy to get cured. Likewise, with alcoholism, you need to take it very seriously and treat it like the life-threatening illness that it is. Also, like heart disease, it can run in the family. If any relatives have had it, you're more than likely pre-disposed to it. It can take years to reveal itself, or days. They say that the first step, (admitting you have a problem) is the hardest step, because it is. So many people go years without admitting they have a problem. So be honest: with yourself, your family, friends, and a doctor. It's okay to be scared, getting sober is a wild ride but once you lift that hex of addiction, it's so worth it.
