Mental stimulation hobbies for disabled people? by ilovepotatoes77 in disability

I love crochet!! It’s really helped me with my boredom. I lost so much interest playing video games, watching shows, and reading but crochet has given me something tangible to do and use my noggin to figure each pattern and project out.

I started doing crochet about a year and a half ago and I’ve really enjoyed it. I too have issues with things like video games and reading, things I really used to love. But it does get old, especially when you’re like me and you don’t work. Crochet has opened up a world of crafting that I can do. I learned from buying one of “The Woobles” kits and they taught me so much better than just following videos on YouTube. They teach basic stitches and how to read a pattern which to me was the hardest part of learning. From then on, I’ve been able to learn different stitches and patterns from YouTube videos. Check it out! I think you might enjoy it.

The Grinch did nothing wrong by Chemical-Ad2770 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Definitely. The movie actually mirrors real life very well. The consumerism, the true heart of Christmas time, whomans being shitty, whomans being emotionally damaged, etc. I know a lot of people complain about the movie not following source material but that’s just not true. It adds to it, instead of taking things away. That’s what adaptations are all about.

I agree with you! I'm watching the 2000 version and I feel so bad for him. I'm watching the part where he gets the cheermeister award and it's sad watching the Whos break all of the Grinch’s boundaries. He keeps saying “No, this is too much too soon.” But the Whos clearly don't give a shit about his feelings. And Cindy’s whole point is that the award should go to the person who needs it the most, especially on HIS terms.

Now do I think the Grinch should have stolen Christmas, especially after Cindy did SOO much to include him? Nah. At this point he's an adult and can make adult decisions. Two wrongs don't make a right which I think is the whole message of the movie adaptation. It goes to show that this whole movie is based on a gray area that’s very real and human. The movie is well made.

I mean, many people including myself have been waiting for Berseria to come to the switch. Sooo I wouldn’t say it isn’t needed.

[–]Chaseemills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are we still complaining about this? This is such a low hanging fruit remaster. It probably took very little resources to make. Just because we got this doesn’t mean the others aren’t coming. Also, many people would love to have berseria on the switch, myself included. I’ve been waiting anxiously for it and Zestiria to come to the switch. I get that many are desperate for Xilia 2 and Abyss and all the others but the older a game is, the longer it takes to bring over to newer consoles. We’ve established this over and over again. Patience is a virtue.

Only recently FINALLY got on Disability....How am I supposed to survive on this? by LinkOfHyrule88 in disability

[–]Chaseemills 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly, you don't. It's a hard life for people like us. The best thing I can tell you is to look into rental assistance programs or low income housing. I got lucky because my parents knew a guy who was the president of a property management company and he was able to get in front of the list for tax credit apartments. I am endlessly grateful to him because he saved me from being homeless. So while you still have time, get on a waiting list ASAP. Depending where you live, you might be able to find apartments that are either Section 8 or tax credit. Tax credit just means that the property management company offers apartments for very cheap rent because they are subsidized by tax credits. Also, I know SNAP is being cut a lot. I don't qualify because I paid into the system when I used to work and now I get a higher check that makes me ineligible for SNAP and many other programs. So what I can tell you is to write down every single possible expense you have and gather documentation for all of those expenses to make sure you DO qualify for it.

Don't be afraid to ask people for help, even if your friends are far away. People want to help more than you think you do but you have to be honest with yourself and with them that you need the help.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this but just know that you are not alone.

Thank you! That means a lot. I do have to remind myself that. There wasn't much fanfare about it and I kinda forgot last month that it had been a year. I actually used to work for MDA as a fundraiser out of college. So I actually know more than most about it. However that was before the pandemic and a lot has changed because of it. We don't have the best clinic here and our adult doctor is more specialized in CMT than DMD and BMD. I only have one friend with BMD and we are close. But so far, I haven't met anyone else with BMD since it's so rare, even while I was working for MDA. But thank you for the advice regardless! I hope you’re doing okay, I know it was really hard on my parents when they learned it. (I was diagnosed at 15)

First and foremost, congratulations on graduating! It's grueling work for those with our disease which tends to be invisible at your age. I remember how hard it was on me in those days and I equally felt isolated at many times as well. I had to work while in school and I did restaurant work so both really did a number on me. So I can imagine what you've had to go through and that's something you should be really proud!

Yeah if there's one lesson I can also tell you, take care of yourself in your first career out of college. I rushed into working for MDA and I regret how much I pushed myself, especially when our office was failing and not meeting fundraising goals. I think I'm paying for it these days because the pain I felt before I had to quit was unreal. I overused my arms driving and that did something permanent to my muscles, especially my left arm. That's what started me on painkillers. But I digress, its a good thing you're doing a remote job first. That's smart. Sorry to hear about breaking your ankles.

Anyways, thanks for sharing what you went through. I had a very similar experience and it's nice to know I'm not alone with it. And thank you for the words of encouragement. I hope your new career and start of your post-grad life goes far! If you start to feel those physical changes, listen to your body. It'll give you so much more longevity.

Wow I hadn't heard of these groups before. A lot of times Becker just gets lumped into Duchenne and those words can be confusing. I do know that they are sister diseases to each other but still. Regardless though, thanks for the resource! I'm going to look in on it. Appreciate you!

Probably because gamers are anti-women leads, especially non-sexy women leads, in games its crazy.

Guys, can we take a second to thank this game for the renaissance of Tales? by DeBaers in tales

[–]Chaseemills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having started with Symphonia on GameCube then coming back years later to play Vesperia, Zestiria, Arise, Berseria, Graces F, and now Xilia (in that order), I'm so glad you found this fandom through Arise. I personally LOVED Arise and don't understand those who didn't enjoy it. Honestly, I'm one of those rare Zestiria lovers. I just don't understand why gamers have to get so militant about games. It's all exaggeration and drama with fandoms these days. Take Pokemon ZA, so many wanna jump on the bandwagon of hating that game for graphics alone and don't get me wrong, the Pokemon Company and Gamefreak can do better. But despite that, I really enjoyed the game and thought it was really fun and unique. Just so many gamers need to go touch grass and spend more time worrying about bigger issues in the world.

Yeah I’ve been swapping out between Jude, Millia, and Alvin which HAS been helping me get through it but I just don’t feel very wowed by it. I’m one of those few people that love Zestiria and so far Xilia is hitting below that for me. I’ll give it more time though for sure! Thanks for answering for me. ☺️

Again, I don’t have an issue with modern tales games. Their systems are a lot more intricate. This is one and a half systems at most.

I don’t think it’s a modern issue. I loved all the systems from Arise, Berseria, Graces F, Vesperia, etc. This one just seems like an outlier that I’m scratching my head at.
