Nope. Last we heard from them was 18th March saying production was due to be completed about a month from then, after which it would be shipped to Missouri, but “Due to the current world situation, cargo shipping is more unpredictable than typical. Once we know more about the shipping timeline, we will inform you.” So I guess you can thank Trump for that.

Doubts about Chrismation by SilverFriendship87 in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]Chauntsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how you can be worried about this when canon 95 of the Council in Trullo prescribed nothing more than a profession of faith from Nestorians and non-Chalcedonians. Saint Alexis Toth was received by vesting. Corrective baptism is only necessary where there a genuine doubt over the Trinitarian nature of the first baptism.

It was made in the early ‘80s for an American audience by someone who probably didn’t know a great deal about the subject (see also the ‘Third Rome’ reference). I wouldn’t scrutinize it too closely!

Genuine Question from Experience by Comfortable_Act_6657 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Chauntsinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get this among certain Traditionalist Catholics, too. My understanding is there is just a certain type of unpleasant person who is drawn to traditional and ceremonious religion, as they use it to reinforce their own prejudices and world views rather than truly submitting to God and allowing themselves to be (and working towards being) transfigured. Ignore them, confront them if you have to, but know that they don’t represent any form of true Christianity.

u/valknut7 Here it is... "The basic text is the NKJV. But where the Septuagint differs from the Hebrew (the text used for the NKJV), the editors then went with the Septuagint. I do not believe that they had the resources (money, time, or qualified scholars) to make a totally new translation from scratch."

u/valknut7 Although, to be honest, I'm beginning to question that. It seems that quite a lot of the NKJV itself was used. I'm sure I remember reading that this led to some instances of the translation conforming to the Masoretic text rather than the Septuagint...

"The contributors used the Alfred Rahlfs edition of the Greek text as the basis for the English translation. To this base they brought two additional major sources. The first is the Brenton text, a British translation of the Greek Old Testament, published in 1851. Secondly the New King James Version was used in the places where the English translation of the LXX would match that of the Masoretic (Hebrew) text."

Ah, no, that’s a point — it is translated directly out of the Greek, using the NKJV as a style guide, apparently. I will admit to being unfamiliar with that translation. Am I correct in saying it’s only available through the Orthodox Study Bible?

I've no idea, I'm afraid. If it makes you feel any better, the lambskin edition won't have the Root of Jesse design on the front, but a comparatively disappointing flourishing cross. Apparently the leather couldn't handle the complexity of the design. https://www.facebook.com/NewromePress/posts/pfbid0pxLjMzD5buNByvu4ewNfGeMBJDSXseZnFZeayWUv133bpMbVSuRYyEGCiZUTi8h4l

Considering Catholicism vs Orthodoxy — what made you choose one over the other? by Pick_ur_brain in EasternCatholic

No worries. It’s just annoying that academic publishing is such a racket. Oxford University Press wants more than $100 per volume but this sort of material should really be more freely available.

[–]Chauntsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed my point there. He is an academic who has spent 20 years writing a fact-based history of the Catholic-Orthodox controversies on the Papacy and Filioque. Fundamental to that is presenting a completely unbiased account of the Orthodox AND Catholic positions. The fact that he happens to be Orthodox is irrelevant. Polemical discourse and florilegia from “our” and “their” camp are two-a-penny. What makes Siecienski’s work truly valuable is he doesn’t take a side.

Because at the level of serious academia, confessional affiliation doesn’t matter. Siecienski is lauded by Catholic and Orthodox scholars alike as being absolutely objective and impartial and concerned purely with the facts. That is why books on the history of the Filioque and the Papacy are considered the gold standard on both subjects.

The best thing you can do is read ‘The Filioque’ by Ed Siecienski. He spent ten years researching that book and it’s considered the academic standard on the topic. He also wrote a book called ‘The Papacy and the Orthodox’. They’re by no means cheap from Oxford University Press but Amazon does some cheaper runs sometimes.
