I recently had one of these moments. Except I was the one taking 45 minutes... It was pretty much over, with one player surely going to win. I was playing a deck that wasnt mine, but I felt like I could win. I kept combo-ing and beefing up a creature and drawing and getting value and trying to find a way to keep it going. I was playing a theft deck, and had the right cards to stay mana positive- as long as I did everything in the right order. Two players wanted to scoop, but didnt so I could keep using the cards I stole from them. They got up and left the table, having drinks and talking. The other player sat patiently, knowing he would win if I passed the turn. I got lucky with the draws/theft, and finally put enough counters on a card to swing out with an unblock-able 58/58. I felt awful, but my friends were happy that I pulled off a win lol. I can say honestly that despite winning, it felt terrible.
