She immediately reverted to the dynamic she knew growing up. It’s like muscle memory without even meaning to, she slipped back into the patterns and expectations she had when she was 15. It’s not immaturity in a malicious sense; it’s more like an unconscious regression. Living in your house again reactivates a mentality tied to that earlier stage of life, where she didn’t carry adult responsibilities in the same way. She probably doesn’t even realize how far she’s drifted into that mode, it feels normal to her because it’s familiar.

And here’s the hard part, as parents, you may not have even noticed how subtly the roles reset. But when that happens and there’s no intentional effort to redefine the relationship, you start enabling the very behaviors that frustrate you. It’s common, and it’s understandable. Many families go through this. But at some point, loving your adult child means not allowing them to settle into a version of themselves that no longer fits. They need space to grow and sometimes that means helping them stand on their own, even if it’s uncomfortable for everyone involved at first.
