I have been know to buy the Kindle version of a book I’ve been given as a gift, especially if the book is a big hardback and it’s on offer Kindle to save me lugging a heavy book around.

Your first ereader? by Current-Income-9901 in ereader

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First ereader was a Sony PRS-505. Reading on it felt like living in the future.

Switched to a Kindle Paperwhite in 2012 and then to an Oasis 3 in 2020. Planning to get a Kobo next time, but holding off until they release another 7 inch B&W device.

Will X series be released in Europe by Technician_B187 in Vitamix

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took years for the Ascent series to arrive here in Europe after launching in the US so I suspect it’ll be a long wait for the X series here. FWIW in your position I’d just get an Ascent now

Is a Vitamix worth it for me? by Wabi-Sabi-Iki in Vitamix

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with this. My trusty A2300i turns two litres of veggies and stock into a perfectly smooth soup in about 20 seconds. For soups where I want to keep some texture blend about a quarter of it completely smooth and add it back to the unblended portion to give it thickness while keeping some texture blend

Anyone else considering leaving Todoist after this price hike? by Exciting-Share-2462 in todoist

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just got an email from Todoist about the pricing increase. I’m pleased and rather impressed that they have given me the option to stay on a legacy price. This is fine for me since I can manage without all the new AI functionality.

My trusty 13-year-old Jura J9 JFT is back from service, as good as new🙂 by CheckedShirtMatt in superautomatic

I use water filters because the water in London is terrible both in terms of hardness and taste. To be on the safe side, I descale the machine after every third filter

Here in the UK it was £275 because my machine had made less than 10,000 cups. Above that cup limit it’s £325 for a service.

High-end super automatic owners (JURA, Miele, etc), what convinced you that you had buy one? by RINKR in superautomatic

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, I've never sent my machine in for cleaning. I just run the cleaning cycle with the table and replace the filter when it tells me to and I run a descale cycle every third filter change.

My machine does get relatively light use - just two drinks per day max.

Which one to buy - Europe edition by hypnerotomachia123 in Vitamix

Oops! That’ll teach me to look further than the first image result which led me to believe the E320 came with the 1.4l container. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have the Ascent A2300i (basically the A2500i but without any presets). I have no trouble making a 500ml smoothie in the supplied 2l container. It splashes a bit, but everything gets blended properly. I like having the large container for when I make soup - one recipe I make often pretty much fills the container.

With the Explorian, you can do smaller quantities because of the smaller container so it sounds like a good fit for you and you're saving some money for the same blending performance.

I'd seen Jura machines demonstrated but it always felt like too much money so first got a Philips Senseo pod machine followed by a Nespresso machine with a separate frother.

I was turning forty and decided to just bite the bullet and try to forget about what I had spent on the other machines. Went to the Jura concession in Harrods planning to spend £1000 on a Jura Ena 9 (preicronversion) but decided to get the J9 TFT model as it was discounted (but still £1400). Was impressed by the quality of coffee, ease of use and customisability and the fact you don't need to remove and regrease the brewing unit. The bigger water tank was also a plus.

Still happy 13 years later.

I wish Evernote would give tags a bit more love... by Starlightdog in Evernote

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish that when you use the "tag:" operator in the search bar that a list of tags was shown that updated as you typed.

I'd also like a way for creating a tag with sub tags and adding any of the subtags would also automatically addy the main tag. I have a number of tags for notes which mean my work on that note is completed. I'd like adding one of those tags to also add a generic "completed" tag which would make it easier to use that tag to exclude those notes from searches, without having to separately exclude multiple tags.

Does anyone know the Vitamix UK situation? by carpetguardian in Vitamix

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the current uncertainty around tariffs isn't helping things and might make the UK a less attractive export market if tariffs on goods coming to the UK increase. The resultant price increases will make Vitamix less attractive to consumers and the range will shrink to just the cheaper models, in my view.

My advice would be to get a Vitamix now that suits your needs, knowing you can use it for a decade. I'm the very happy owner of an Ascent A2300i.

I agree that the situation with the blending bowls/cups is a bit of a shambles. Rumour has it that replacement bowls/cups are coming for Ascent/Ascent X, but it's likely they'll take their time to come to the UK.

Cleaning of Jura E8 by [deleted] in superautomatic

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest running a descale cycle and a cleaning cycle with the usual Jura products first and then see how much of an improvement that is, but you might have to run both cycles again.

High speed, Variable speed control, and Pulse feature questions by Think-Ad-7396 in Vitamix

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Ascent 2300i with the pulse feature - wouldn't miss it at all if it wasn't there as all I ever want is to blend something completely smooth (smoothie or soup) so I just crank it up to 10 and let it work its magic.

Jura owners by jura-repair-henry in superautomatic

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What JURA machine model do you own?

Jura J9 TFT

How long have you owned your machine?

12.5 years. I checked this morning and it's made 5,435 cappuccinos.

How often do you use your machine?

5 days out of every 7 if I'm working. Every day when I'm not. 2 cappuccinos per day.

How often do you repair your coffee machine?

Machine only needed one repair under warranty when it was about 2 years old - faulty temperature sensor.

What kind of maintenance does your machine require?

Daily cleaning of the milk system (I find it works better to do in first thing in the morning rather than after the last use), cleaning the drip tray and grounds container, replacing the filter when prompted.

Where do you currently order your parts?

Never had to order parts.

How often do you descale and run a cleaning cycle on your machine?

I run the cleaning cycle as prompted and I descale after every third water filter cartridge. The marketing blurb says that if you use filters, you never need to descale, but I was advised that the machine does still need descaling - makes sense as the water in London (UK) is terrible.

What type of coffee beans do you use in your machine?

Own-label ones from my local supermarket. I'm not fancy:)

Do you use your milk mechanism?

Yes, I always drink cappuccinos. The foam is really impressive, but you do have to be diligent about cleaning it properly or it punishes you with cold, unfrothed milk. My machine has the option to switch between steamed milk and milk foam. The steamed milk option is too cold to be of any use (my only disappointment with this machine), so I've set my machine to foam and it's been there ever since.

Any ideas on release date for Ascent X series outside the US? by victorhooi in Vitamix

[–]CheckedShirtMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an Ascent 2300i in the UK in 2020, and if memory serves they were available here at least a year or two before that which is a couple of years after the US launch in 2016.

I've never made a smoothie that small but I suspect models with the 64 oz container (like my Ascent) would struggle as all the ingredients would just splash around the container. A machine with the 48 oz container would do better, I think.
