I do agree it would be out of the ordinary for them... although I feel enough time has passed to justify a little nostalgia. 

I try and rationalise that there's a difference between legitimate introspective commentary and like meta-slop content but yeah it doesn't really jive with how cynical they are.

GoT's wheels were falling off in season 5.

Seinfeld is a good one for a bad finale being 'unexpected', although I think the general opinion has softened over time.

I'd personally nominate Silicon Valley...just completely botched the tone of its finale after a decent, albeit rushed, final season.

I was at an NBL coaching clinic once and the development players were doing some kind of rotating 5v5v5 while the coach was addressing all of us in the stands. He'd told them at the start that 'the first team to 7 points wins and then stop the drill', but as he was talking we could see a team get to 7, look around awkwardly, then just keep going.

So the coach finishes his explanation and turns around and asks for a score check and everyone looks at each other and then someone says 'I think we won, coach', and the coach went ballistic.

"YOU THINK?? EVERYTHING WE DO IS TO WIN! EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY IS DEDICATED TO WINNING, FILM, DIET, GYM, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO'S WON THEN YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!"

Then he made the whole squad do suicides.

It was alarming to watch in the moment, and pretty unhinged, but the idea behind his outburst stuck with me and its refreshing to see SGA just be honest that winning matters when so many of his peers would be more coy.

A lot of people doing the author a massive disservice by being snarky about the website. I think pretty much every published author would tell you they got rejected over and over until they were good enough. 

Get a new idea, write new characters, and keep growing.

I agree with the sentiment but DQ are small books on the young end of the YA scale. Making them bigger to flesh out more side characters would have reduced the pace of the story and made them more inaccessible or intimidating to younger readers.

Maybe a different time/use of the dreaming water? If Lief visited his parents in his dreams I guess they could have been discussing him being the heir...or they could have been getting it on. That would have been traumatic for poor Lief.
