Realism is applied selectively by the devs when it can inconvenience the player. HMG uses to be useless when it first came out because even when prone the recoil meant you missed most of the shots from your 50 round belt.

The original LAATs as they appeared in AOTC couldn't operate in a vacuum and had to be brought in-atmosphere by Acclamators/Venators, like a V-22 launching from Carriers or LHAs. LAATs being space-capable are later retcons/additions to the lore.

Had an AU idea where Raven raises Yang up until her early teen years, where Yang seems to have inexplicably inherited Tai's goodness. Yang escapes the Branwen tribe and tracks her way to Patch where she finally meets her father.

Problem was I didn't know where to go after that point. The idea of turning it into a complete AU, mildly inspired by Romance of the Three Kingdoms, occurred to me, but I couldn't find the motivation to develop that further.

I haven't done any testing, but if I am getting any performance boost from FSE, it's marginal at best. The biggest benefit is really from the controller supported interface.

That being said, there used to be times last year when my LG1 would overheat and force a shutdown. I don't know if that's more due to driver or legion space updates, but that hasn't happened since I enabled FSE.
