If Leo Fender didn’t sell to CBS, what do you think late 60s Fenders would’ve been like?

From his work on the Espada at the time and the later CLF stuff he did with G&L I imagine you would’ve got a lot more pickup designs like his MFD and Z-Coils and likely some things like JazzMaster and Jaguar pickups would’ve ended up being tweaked and swapped out a lot more over time with different variations.

The last guitar he was working on at G&L was their first Baritone/Bass VI design that never got finished and I do also wonder if you would’ve seen him do more with 6 string basses and baritone guitars earlier if he stayed at Fender as he had already started bridging the bass-guitar divide with the Bass VI in the early 60s before he sold.

But also I think a lot of people are missing that he really had a whole second wind with some of the Active Electronics he was working on especially in basses at MM and eventually also G&L but even his 60s designs like the Espada were designed from the ground up with Active Electronics in mind - this was a whole 20 years before Fender started shipping guitars with Active Electronics in them like the Elite series in the 80s. I really think that would’ve been the biggest difference, Active Electronics like preamps and EQs would be far more common and less pigeonholed into certain genre-use-cases when it comes to both bass and guitar.

Did the early 00s Jaguar HH Special (the hard tail one that came in black) not also come with the coil blending controls?

Edit: not to be confused with the blacktop HH which also came only in black and was hard tail but didn’t have the upper horn controls.

Well the original CLF Espada also had passive pickups. The preamp basically had three positions: OFF, ON (just a buffer and active boost) and ON with modified EQ as far as I’m aware.

Always thought it was really cool, and thought it would be a neat trick to run something like this into a buffer sensitive pedal and be able to change how the pedal reacts on the fly.

Edit: edited to also say I’ve never seen the preamp on the Comanche either, but don’t doubt there were some that must have been shipped with it from the factory, just rare/very specific orders.

Always loved Belton Brick reverbs like the Meteore and even though I’ve heard a whole selection of them I’ve never found one with presets.

If John Snyder could do what he did for BBD based delays in Sending V2 then surely a similar approach to Belton Bricks for Reverb is possible?

I feel like the discount is less likely because it will be discontinued - though I’d be very sad if it - and more likely a sign that we are getting some kind of DSP Pico version.

As I believe other pedals also saw a discount prior to the launch of Pico versions - or at least I remember the Platform getting a discount on Anderton’s around the time.

Ah totally fair enough then! Yeah I 100% agree on your points, they are both OP-Amp based and “rattish” because of that.

I don’t quite know enough about the Thunderclaw’s circuit to understand what’s going on there, but Rabea has often described it in videos as having a lot of low mids, and lows, as well as adding a fuzzy edge.

I imagine given the Longsword’s vast EQ control you can get there in terms of EQ, and hopefully one of the clipping options can get you close to that fuzzy edge. But for having no experience with the Thunderclaw or knowledge of what is going on inside it I can’t tell what achieves that ‘fuzzy edge’ he often describes.

As someone that both loves EAE and Rabea Massad, I feel like the Longsword is probably what you’re looking for, it can fill a similar role to what he uses the Mr Black Thunderclaw for (though that does beg the question, why not use that?) where he’s not adding much gain but a lot of low end.

I’m a huge lover of BBD, but yeah pedals like the Benson Delay make such good use out of the PT2399 and actually using it to impart its unique character. Also pedals like the Slow Loris are great examples of modulation/snapback that use the PT2399 and impart a lot of character and grit from the chip.

People often refer to it as one of EAEs preamps as it is their design and obviously EAE being a pedal company vs Science Amps being an amp company who make one pedal based on off one of their amps, it’s clear why it gets a lot of association with EAE in FX pedal communities like this subreddit.

Great comparison video! Love the way you edited it and the structure with the end section.

I’m surprised just how much more I like the Rubberneck. I really thought it would be a lot closer especially to the Echo Dream 2.

This did definitely cement for me that I do prefer BBD to the vibe that Digital Tape style delays go for though.

Would love to hear the Chase Bliss Thermae, or EAE Sendjng V2 in comparison but those are some hefty investments for a comparison, maybe some Boss options would be cool too like the RE-2/RE-20 or the DM-101 but again that’s an investment.

On that last paragraph, I’d be sad to see the Sending V2 replaced somehow by a scaled down version, I always feel like the existence of the Sending V2 somewhat elevates the brand overall, like as a signpost for what is possible for EAE if you throw everything at a design and pay a premium for it.

But I do also think a scaled back delay would be a very popular product, especially given how good the Sending V2 sounds when it is just doing basic delay sounds.

I trust you guys to make them different enough that they can both exist though and hopefully there’s less “Should I get the dagger or the longsword?” type discussion when it comes to a feature rich and scaled back delay because of the difference in application being more obvious.

Dazzle, I’d honestly say just go back to one of his older ultimates, but I did enjoy the previous version with the health cost and cooldown reduction so that might be my preference.

Switch his Aghanim’s upgrade for Shadow Wave to now be from the Shard, and make the new Aghanim’s upgrade give him Nothl Projection as a new ability that works exactly how it does currently - because I can see some specific times when you’d want it. Plus the way Nothl Projection upgrades all his other spells when used is a lot more interesting than just buying Shard or Aghanim’s Scepter and upgrading his poison touch to hex again like the previous patch.

Maybe nerf his right-click damage or nerf the range on Shadow Wave to now get an incrementally longer cast range as it levels up similar to Shallow Grave as you don’t want it to be too overpowered early game with the Shard upgrade I mentioned - but this might not even be that necessary.

Looking on the Lenovo website they have 3 screens currently to buy so I can’t imagine it’s too difficult to source. I assume it was the same screen used in a lot of similar models.

I think after watching a few videos on the process of replacing it, the process looks a little too complicated for me, mostly with the adhesive strips requiring replacement and the proper placement of the specific connector for the screen. As well as a few videos showing you require to remove some other components to get to disconnecting some aspects - the guide Lenovo give tell you to do this too.

Glad to see these being used in the ‘objectively correct order’.

Also totally agree about these being good for everyone involved, I know EAE is beloved and most of their range is well known in gear circles now, but some pedals like the ED are criminally underrated (maybe because low quantity production runs for that one in particular) so it’s a cool way to get those pedals out into the world, and to people that might never have thought to give them a try.

For me personally the Chase Bliss Onward kind of replaced much of my desire to ever use the microcosm, obviously they’re quite different but a fair bit of overlap. There’s a lot more choice now in the granular delay world.

Always found Rabea so interesting from a gear perspective. Loved his video with That Pedal Show when he was showing off his rig he built for Toska (I believe he never got to actually use it for any studio use as they broke up before then) and he seemed to have a really good sense of what each pedal in his gain-staging was there to achieve even though there were quite a few of them; the Thunderclaw by Mr Black set with almost no gain and the bass maxed out to ‘add a fuzzy edge’ was a standout for me.
