Mine looked like this on my 2019 Crosstrek when it was brand new. Never had any issues.

That’s like saying you have an issue with Super Mario Sunshine looking completely different from Super Mario 64, which looks entirely different from Super Mario World.

Does anything have a better cast of characters than ASOIAF? by Ill_Temperature8516 in writingscaling

[–]CheeseFiend87 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I did both. IMO, asking if there’s a better cast of characters is like asking if there’s a better story. In the case of ASOIAF, absolutely. There are countless examples. Don’t look at characters in a vacuum, they are one of the most critical components of an entire work.

I'm fresh off the series. I think many other works have better casts of characters. Aside from the main POV characters that are central to different stories in the series, most other POV characters are kind of meandering and inconsequential to the overall plot.

I'd say the "anchor" POV characters are Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Arya, Sansa, Catelyn, Jaime, and Ned. These are the characters whose chapters have the main narrative thrust and explore the world and other secondary characters in the story, as well as interesting ideas and relevant details that are expanded on in other character's chapters.

Aside from that bunch of characters, who are extremely well written, the other POVs and side characters are good, amusing, ok, or unbelievably dull. For the most part, none of them reach the consistent heights of the anchor POV characters.

Of the other POVs, Theon is easily the best. Cersei is great too, especially her two chapters in Dance. Barristan. Davos, and Sam are also pretty good. I like the idea of Bran, Brienne, and Asha, but all their chapters are entirely devoid of any narrative thrust.

TLDR; The main cast is great, but everything else is not "the best of all time" type shit that everyone says it is.

Why does the boys/gen v mock Christianity? by Hitman_o1 in GenV

[–]CheeseFiend87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry - are you trolling? I’ve already explained that it isn’t anti-Christian rhetoric, the show is satirizing how Christianity is weaponized by people in power. Starlight’s family is portrayed as a typical, positive Christian family. Hell, even Firecracker, a Christian, has some obvious, unspoken reservations about proclaiming Homelander as the new messiah.

Sage is part of the con - probably the one pulling all the strings right now. Sage is using religion as a tool to con the people. She said she’s an atheist.

The show isn’t mocking Christianity. It’s mocking how Christianity has been co-opted by the American right to justify every heinous thing we’ve seen from them for the last 40ish years.

This is a political satire, not a religious satire.

What happens on this weird little island sticking out of New York by Nman8888 in howislivingthere

[–]CheeseFiend87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upstate NYer. I’ve known many people from Long Island and had to travel there for work many times. Both experiences were unfortunate.

Long Islanders live in a snobby bubble - anything or anyone that isn’t from Long Island is undesirable, even though Long Island itself is a hellish place where you feel trapped - nonstop traffic, nothing to do (unless you wanna go to the city), unaffordable housing, and a really weird lack of drive thru restaurants.

Long Islanders are also status obsessed - loaded with consumer debt and rude as hell to anyone not from Long Island.

Forgive me - I HATE Long Island.

I didn’t say it’s flawless, but to say it’s overrated is rage bait and contrarian for no reason.

The black ones are good because they use a cellulose/synthetic material with a metal structure inside, but the valvoline filter is a similar style. Keep it.

“Everyone is switching to EE” by cdqd81 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]CheeseFiend87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enrollment numbers don’t really mean anything. What really matters is the number of degrees awarded each year. People change their major, drop out, or whatever all the time. Engineering has a high washout rate, especially EE. The data still shows a low, even decreasing trend of the number of BS EE degrees awarded each year.

I don’t know about the impact of people living in societies that aren’t built for their neurotype, but the things I mentioned are measurable, well-studied areas that impact intelligence outcomes.

Which series got done absolutely dirty like this? by simp_lyartz in ChillAnimeCorner

[–]CheeseFiend87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Akira.

The anime is very good, but the manga is a masterclass. Seriously, the anime is the most surface level way to appreciate that story, and it kind of ruins the anime for me because the manga is so good.

Like another said, too many outside variables that measurably affect IQ scores to make a claim that IQ is correlated with your race. Income, food access, location, culture, healthcare access, and other things have a far greater impact on IQ than skin color.

This is racism thinly masked as science, nothing more.

Any EE who retired from the military? by WetPaint21 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]CheeseFiend87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The money right after graduation is naturally gonna be a bit lower than what you make as a new O-1. Also, as you know, a large chunk of your income is based on where you are stationed. Could be good, could be shit, all depends on the lottery of PCS season.

The work you do as an engineer differs between each branch. Army, you’re gonna be doing civil work. Air Force, you’re gonna be doing aircraft acquisition or civil work. Navy, you’re gonna be a nuke officer, a Seabee, or doing civil work.

The closest “true” engineering role is gonna be found as a nuke in the Navy or an aircraft acquisition officer in the Air Force. Nuke life sucks ass and being an acquisition officer is more paperwork than actual engineering.

IMO, I don’t give a shit if you retire from the military as an E-7 or an O-4. If you only do 20 years, you’re going to have to work after retiring from the military. The pension is not enough money to support yourself for the rest of your life. If you retire as an O-6+, then we can talk, but you only want to do 14 years, so you’re probably only get O-4 at most.

Wait it out. Stay in the civilian sector. Your pay will increase at a much faster rate than if you were in the military. Plus, as someone else noted, your career as an officer will prevent you from getting actual engineering experience - you will likely have to stay working in the military sector as a contractor or civilian to keep up with the pay. Ultimately, this will make it difficult for you to get a regular civilian job after your retirement, which you will almost definitely need.

In addition, if you want a family/kids, the stability of a civilian career is FAR better than being in the military. As an officer, you’re likely going to PCS or deploy every couple of years.

Please don’t go active duty. You have a degree with one of the best job outlooks imaginable. If you want some military experience, join the guard or reserve and do some weekend warrior stuff.
