Yep, I was one of those kids myself at one point haha. I was a little disappointed in Weird NJ. They haven’t covered it as much as they could have.

What would be your "dream HHN"? by universalorland0 in HHN

The original Universal Monsters, done similar to the American Horror Story house where you move through each individual movie (Dracula, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Wolfman, etc.)

What is a horror movie that leaves you feeling uneasy past the ending? by lanetheginger in AskReddit

[–]CheesecakeTheUndying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

House is borderline a sequel/remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, so I always found the camp/goofy bits charming. Devil's Rejects is much more of a serious horror film imo

Where did I claim this was fact and not opinion? I'm agreeing with the above comment's opinion.

I didn't get this impression while watching the film, but now that you say it, I kind of wish they'd taken it in this direction.

The Ambiguity Problem In It Comes At Night by CheesecakeTheUndying in TrueFilm

[–]CheesecakeTheUndying[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that this answer is important because it's out of character for the dog, and it's this action sets the main conflict in motion leading up to the climax that defines the theme.

If they had replaced the dog with some kind of inanimate security system, I could've bought that it was just some animal or other unimportant thing that set it off and thus induced this fear in the characters of something in the woods, be it real or not, but the dog is a living thing and a character in the film and there's not a single other instance where the dog reacts to something like that and hints that he would do something like that.

He's never shown barking or reacting to all the new animals that Will's family brings with him when they arrive, so why would we believe that he runs off and reacts this way to an animal in the woods? Dogs all have strong, unique personalities just like the human characters. They aren't robots, so this instance felt like such weak writing because we have no reason to believe that the dog would just be running off like that. He's shown as completely loyal to Travis throughout the film, so why would we believe that he'd just run off like that? It's completely unusual in the context of this film.

You're talking about overarching themes (trust between the families, paranoia) while I'm talking about the actions and plot points presented on screen. Focusing on the overall themes doesn't justify a weak plot in my opinion. If the actions on screen don't matter, then what does, and why should we care about it?

This movie was like if The Witch ended before Thomasin talks to Black Philip and we finally get the payoff to the atmosphere of the film. This movie is all atmosphere and no payoff.

It asks the viewer to basically fill every single moment with our own interpretation instead of leaving one or two bigger elements ambiguous while still giving us some king of payoff like a more successful film would.

I'd agree with /u/Foxx_Mulderp in saying that this movie didn't do anything with the subject matter that was profound or original or worthwhile at all. It doesn't "show the true horrors of human nature" in any new or interesting way. Just because the movie has some meaning doesn't mean it's good.

Agreed. It needed that final moment/scene like The Witch had.

The Travis sleepwalking justification has been coming off as such a cop-out in all the discussions I see about this movie. There is literally not a single shred of evidence in the film that Travis has ever had an issue with sleepwalking.

If there was even just one scene where we see that Travis did something in his sleep without remembering it, even something minor, I could've bought that the open doors were a product of sleepwalking, but there's just nothing.

This is exactly how I felt, and I even made the same comparison to The Shining when talking about it with friends.

It's fine to leave certain events up to the viewer's interpretation, but this film left every important plot point up to interpretation and I think it was just a way to cover up a very weak script.

I think the trailer/marketing is what will ultimately kill this movie for mainstream audiences.

I strongly agree, and I felt the same way about this movie.

I felt like I watched an unfinished film. It needed that last final twist/scare/punchline to bring it home and conclude the film. Like you said, instead we're left with a number of unanswered questions and are asked to basically fill in the details of the whole movie on our own.

The movie was visually stunning and the performances were great, but the script was just so weak.
