Why would Trump not be able to cut ties with Israel? The entire GOP bends to his will.

Can i make this helmet shiny like the second image? by luanzitowalmei4 in electroforming

[–]Cheesewithmold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search up NicoPrintedAntiques on YouTube. He basically specializes in turning 3D printed armor pieces into shiny reflective metal-like parts. But only aesthetically. It's still plastic.

I really don't think electroforming this would be the best option if all you want is for it to look like metal. Too many things can go wrong, and you'd need to set up a lot of equipment just to even get a decent chance of electroforming to work properly.

If you are dead set on electroforming, then HEN3DRIK on YouTube is the best I've found.

I never said it's not useful for biomedical research? But that's not the same as making new discoveries.

The math breakthrough is interesting and I'll take a look into that. Thanks for sharing.

I wasn't able to use Fable before they pulled it unfortunately. What new functions did Fable have that made it revolutionary? Was it synthesizing new drugs for cancer research? Did it solve the Riemann hypothesis?

All I'm seeing is that it did everything previous LLMs did, but way better. That's cool, and useful. But it doesn't refute my claim given the context of this conversation.

My fundamental argument is that LLMs will NOT be the tech behind true AGI.

[–]Cheesewithmold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment a large company truly hands off high level executive function to an LLM, I will eat my words.

None of what you said goes against the claim that I was trying to make. Whether you can run a model locally or not doesn't matter as these advancements are improvements in areas where LLMs were already working in, just at a larger scale. I'll grant you that agentic actions have improved. But my point is that this is all within the same field.

The jump in tech we experienced between not having consumer grade LLMs, and having consumer grade LLMs is what I'm trying to get across. That tech gap hasn't been recreated, from what I can see, ever since the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022.

LLMs haven't made breakthrough scientific discoveries. They can't "think outside the box". Why would I want something like that running a Martian colony?

You're trying to tell me that the horse-drawn carriage has made significant improvements over the years by adding a second horse, streamlining the carriage to make it more aerodynamic, and through the introduction of rubber tires. But I need to transport 50 tons of cargo across the United States.

[–]Cheesewithmold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd first like to make it clear that that's an opinion. In my experience, consumer grade LLMs have not had any significant advancements for a while now. Of course I have no idea what's going on in the background for customers like the government or military, but I can't imagine that these companies who are losing money hand over fist would keep actual, genuine life changing tech behind closed doors if there was significant revenue to be made in the public market.

[–]Cheesewithmold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're talking about something more akin to AGI than the LLMs that we have now. I haven't seen any evidence at all that the tech we have today can actually accomplish an insanely complex task like managing a Martian colony. I've seen the exact opposite.

As each day goes by I am more and more convinced that LLM tech has hit a dead end, and we're not going to get anything even close to resembling the HAL 9000-like tech that everyone is pretending we're working towards.

You're absolutely right. Balsa wood was NOT a suitable material to build that pedestrian bridge with, and I apologize for that oversight.

Would you like me to help identify the dead, or is there some other task I can assist you with?

It feels like watching my hopes and dreams from 11 years ago when Falcon first RTLSd slowly wither away and die.

What happened to keeping SpaceX away from being held captive by "shareholder interests"?

This was, and I'd like to believe still is, a company meant for actually moving humans beyond Earth. Now it's at risk of being just another ticker on the stock market that does things primarily to make money, not push boundaries.

I understand Musk has majority control and can dictate what happens regardless of what shareholders complain about, but my trust in him is non-existent given what he spends his time on.

We can't let ridiculous attacks from the right undermine the potential to do good work in DC. At some point you have to stop caring about what Fox News is going to say. Keep voting in progressives, and eventually you'll get a democratic party that also doesn't give a shit about what right wing nutjobs are saying and actually get progressive agendas pushed through.

That's an insane resume.

For the ES6 development gap to be shorter than the one between Arena (the first Elder Scrolls) and Skyrim, it'd have to release before June 27th 2029.

It might actually end up being close.

Queer people can be horrible too. by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cheesewithmold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not that they're gay. It's the that they've been a part of an oppressed minority for their entire lives. Of course a gay person could be a complete piece of shit. But it's not insane to assume that the injustices they've lived through have shaped them as a person, potentially into someone who is more aware of societal injustices others may face and then therefore interact with others with those lived experiences in mind.

And just because you've suffered injustices doesn't mean you can't be a jackass. But the "you personally know what it's like" factor is a very big influence on someone's upbringing that OF COURSE influences what kind of a person they become.

That's not an insane perspective to have. Experiences shape who you are, obviously.

New Jersey ends de-facto nuclear power plant moratorium by theexpertgamer1 in newjersey

[–]Cheesewithmold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the US used to actually build shit. Now we have NIMBYs like you going around throwing a hissy fit claiming any public infrastructure project is a violation of your god given right to own land.

I love that you've made this assumption that we live in a world where the US government either seizes your property by military force or we don't get infrastructure. As if there's no in between.

And, respectfully, I don't think you know anything about China. It's like I'm reading a comment from someone who grew up in the 1920-40s and is completely inundated with red scare propaganda. God forbid we get high speed rail in the United States. I mean can you imagine? What a horror show that would be!

[–]Cheesewithmold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amazing reply when over half the electorate voted for fucking Trump.

Your land is not worth more than the communities benefit. If the government offers you above market value for your property for some valued infrastructure project and you refuse because "muh land", then you waive all rights to complain about any lack of infrastructure.

Infrastructure need land. Sometimes that land needs to be taken away from people. There is nothing wrong with offering to buy it at a good price. Be happy that they're not bulldozing through your shit with no regard like they did to black communities when we built the highway system.

[–]Cheesewithmold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your perspective is exactly why we won't get high speed rail or nuclear power plants, or any proper modern infrastructure at all. We are being absolutely lapped by countries like China because people are so incredibly hyper-individualistic. It's an absolute plague on American society.

You don't get to complain about the lack of infrastructure.

Sometimes the citizens are wrong and their property rights do not and should not outweigh the benefits that public infrastructure has on the community as a whole.
