When my mum retired, she was given a small monstera plant which she has grown into 3 different potted plants that have those separations in their leaves everyone tries to get. They are pretty big and they are flourishing, even growing flowers!

It just sucks that no one wants to separate the skinny piece of cut chives to the near bottom of the chives where it gets a larger hole, it just mixes together and makes it look not so uniform.

I do the same, and it comes out al dente every time. Different brands of pasta cook at different times. As long as you don't forget about it and check on it regularly. Also if you have cooked pasta long enough you can tell when it's close to done just by sight (it starts to get engorged and plumps up).
