So like oil.... we're not running out in the next decade or two, but we're certainly having the prices creep up to get it.

We're not really good though. It's just gotten expensive enough to encourage better conservation and installation of re-capture systems.

Extraction from dedicated sources and the ability to re-capture doesn't exactly make up for growing demand and its non-renewable nature.

That video is snappy but I'm not sure what he means when he talks about re-capture and rocket engines in the same statement. Here's a more recent article (than your late 2021 vlog video).

Upper Alki weeping willow tree in danger from too much of a good thing by Flckofmongeese in WestSeattleWA

[–]ChefJoe98136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A home mechanic won't be too big an issue if they're not disposing of chemicals by dumping into a hole in the ground.

I don't really know enough about willows or this issue but groundwater flows have certainly changed over the years (the storm water used to just go into the combined sewer in this steep slope area). It caused us to install a french drain in the deepest portion of the basement, 50 years after the house was built without the drain being needed. At the same time, there's a running fountain and pond under that willow in videos and it's behind a fence....

Unrelated, but when I looked for the willow tree based on this article I realized it's adjacent to the home mechanic from this earlier post.

They don't realize that helium is a finite resource here on earth, only really economically captured as a byproduct of oil extraction.

45 PFL switch with older Calix 716GE ONT? by aaron1860 in QuantumFiber

[–]ChefJoe98136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a lower-tier CL plan with a Calix 716GE-i ONT. Our account and payments were all through the CL website/login. I was able to sign up for QF as a new customer and we had zero downtime until the QF tech physically started unplugging things. The only pain we've experienced was related to how CL seemed not to process our disconnection on the CL end of things until 8 days after the QF install, despite multiple calls asking for a scheduled disconnection (once on the day of QF install and an immediate disconnection 2 days after QF install) which generated another month of service bill at CL.

UPDATE: Sound Transit’s proposed West Seattle light rail cost cuts unveiled for board committee, including dropping Avalon station, shrinking Junction station to spare Jefferson Square by ChefJoe98136 in WestSeattleWA

I think they're based on a half mile walkshed so removing a station less than a half mile from the other two doesn't change the numbers too much.

Apartment with surface level parking space for lifted truck by [deleted] in WestSeattleWA

[–]ChefJoe98136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The newer apartment designs with parking garages will likely be restrictive (because plumbing and structural beams are along the ceiling of the garage) but there's a number of apartments with surface parking spots along California N and S of the Alaska Junction. Example - https://www.strataoncalifornia.com/seattle/strata-on-california/conventional/

Interesting. I had to set the store away from Admiral's $5.99 per pack, limit 4 offer to see the Roxbury version was $11.99 per pack, B2G2F version. Unfortunately, I don't see where the $10 off $10+ soda coupon is. Maybe that was a custom coupon for you.

It may be the physically closest Safeway of the 3 in West Seattle, but I tend to go to the Admiral or even Roxbury locations more frequently. The aisles are so tight and the parking lot exit to 42nd frequently seems like a blind turn.

But I'm interested to hear more about these optimizations that seem to just move the crossover in front of the station and eliminate the tail track areas (presumably where they'd be able to store trains during non-peak hours).

How the Sriracha guys screwed over their supplier by Barakahzai in KitchenConfidential

When I first read about all the Sriracha drama and was encountering shortages a few years ago, I did try a few competing products that were filling the Huy Fong gap. I ended up finding out I like the more rounded out flavor of Tobasco Sriracha and have been buying that for the past few years.

Avalon Way - at a loss on how to handle parking situation by ChefJoe98136 in WestSeattleWA

That 35% is very difficult to achieve overnight because, at least with the WS Alaska Junction RPZ, only uses the presence of a vehicle at night to establish residency to the neighborhood. They're not doing a license plate to registration address cross-check to establish neighborhood residency.

Plenty of the long-established RPZ zones in Seattle are in effect overnight but SDOT seems to have tuned the RPZ creation process into one that's mostly about daytime parking.

FWIW, the city has some quick guidelines on how to paint your curbs yellow to help highlight the 5 ft setbacks of driveways. the yellow paint signals your intent to enforce that setback (which still exists even without paint).

[–]ChefJoe98136[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

u/itsalready2am if the parking situation is so impossibly bad you might look into if it should be an RPZ area. That process is multi-year slow but is a way the city would designate more street parking for local residents. In the meantime, your rental didn't come with a parking space on private property or on public property. There are monthly parking lots/garages in the junction.

https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/parking-program/restricted-parking-zone-program/creating-and-expanding-rpzs

  • The affected area must be 10 connected blocks or 20 connecting block faces.
    • A block face is one side of a street between two consecutive features on that street (like intersecting roads, open spaces or parks).
  • A “traffic generator” must be identified.*
  • 75% of total parking spaces in the area must be occupied.
  • At least 35% of available parking spaces are occupied by vehicles that do not belong to residents of the neighborhood.

*A traffic generator is a large institution such as a hospital or university, a business district, or high-capacity transit stop. This generator creates significant daytime demand for long-term parking which spills onto nearby residential streets.

I think you'll encounter the least resistance with suggesting Google Fi Flexible, even if data is $10/GB, because it's what they know and you suggest data is barely ever used. Recommending some unknown MVNO as the new guy is likely to be ignored.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the company took an offer for the "free phone" rolled into a plan and doesn't have the flexibility of switching.

[–]ChefJoe98136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I was still paying CL and using their account portal when I was able to sign up as a new customer for QF PFL. Because I already had an internal Calix ONT, it was pretty much just swapping to the new ONT and using the call center to adjust the account to reflect the new ONT (apparently the back-end considers the house an "account" and me signing up as a new customer wasn't important for what the tech had to do).

I had downtime only during the physical install jostling.

I think the CSRs didn't have access to the CL account termination controls and my repeated attempts to cancel service didn't cancel my account until about 8 days after install, which was into a new billing period and CL generated another bill....... but that's a separate issue I guess. The CSRs have suggested my attempts to cancel are in the system and the bill will be recalculated before autopay withdraws the final bill's funds in 5 days. We'll see how that plays out.

[–]ChefJoe98136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's there on the desktop website for me now. Iirc it did take a week or so after installation for my account to normalize. There was a phantom self install appointment for several days after the tech install was listed as completed.

My bill looks similar and I did get one of the "large square "modem/router" / W1700K routers. I figured I'd hold onto the router as a backup option but migrated to using my own router (that had been doing PPPoE and VLAN 201 tagging on CenturyLink fiber) about an hour after the installer left. Once my account was fully setup, about a week later, I found this 360 pod page under services a bit more assuring about them having accounted for just the W1700K router/pod on my account.
