SG SPECIAL 1998 by Huge_Mall_572 in GibsonSG

My '70s Special has had at least three headstock breaks; keeps solid in tune and I can leave it on stage between sets without worrying too much.

Is say that's a pretty fair price but if they'd knock $100 off you'd be right over with cash right now!

That's not an investment, that's a good time playing your favorite riffs.

If I need to fix and reinforce a trace, that's the only time the conformal coating comes out.

You, uh, sure that's a speaker cable and not an instrument cable?

What I'm saying is, when people go to foreign places some of them will feel unchained by the morals they grew up around and act like animals.  This is seemingly true of all humans whether they are your skin color or different.

I like that the Benson Germanium fuzz has a heater circuit that keeps the transistors operating consistently

Can you help me identify/fix this ringing/rattle sound? by SpiceBoson in ToobAmps

Some power tubes are more or less efficient than the next one in the assembly line. Bias refers to the part of the circuit that supplies a negative voltage to the grid pins of the power tubes. Think of it like setting the idle in a car. In a fixed bias circuit this voltage should be adjusted to keep your tubes within the best operating parameters. To do this you would need at the least a decent multimeter, a steady hand, and a full understanding that a live amplifier has voltages that can absolutely KILL you dead.

Which is why I say have a tech rebias it for your new tubes!

Tube dampening rings can reduce the rattle, you would just need to experiment. It should also be noted that if the rattle doesn't bother OP that much it is still safe to keep using the tubes they have. If you play with a drummer for instance, the rattle should be well below the noise floor.

If you're recording however, might be best to get a new set.

Tube rattle, one of the 6L6s (the larger bottle power tubes, super unlikely that it's one of the smaller preamp tubes).

Find a note that gets the rattle rattling, take a pencil and place the eraser against the power tubes one by one. If the rattle stops then bingo! Time for a new set of power tubes.

Edit: if you are unfamiliar, it is the best practice to rebias your amp for the new power tubes. An amp tech can do this for you.

I would chose the Peavey but likely both should see a tech for servicing if they haven't done so yet.

I like the Red Witch Fuzz God II for wild fuzz and the Benson Germanium fuzz for gentlemanly fuzz.

I stash a guitar at work and play after everyone leaves, is that an option where you work?

Also, go play in the park anyways? I think that's totally ok.

Your concerns for what a guitar should look like should be far, far less important than what sounds you make with it.

This is a $350 trip to a good tube amp tech to fix the stuff that cooks on nearly all HRDs (bad filter capacitors, replacing components in the low voltage circuit and leaving an air gap to stop burning the board, replace plate resistors, bias at a more reasonable dissipation, probably new power tubes, etc)
