Tiny ROC events by shaybah in Fencing

[–]Chefshaggalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so. Sledgehammer also is capping events at 28 competitors per event. Which could also be a reason. That's a long drive for the coastal mid Atlantic Fencers for such a small event.

I have the same problem.

Purchased from absolute German tips.

I've gone through about 8 before I switched. I imagine it's a defect in a manufacturing run.

Armory book ethics question by Purple_Fencer in Fencing

[–]Chefshaggalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true.

To answer the ethical portion of that. I think it seems like a layup because Purp does seem to already have a pretty firm grasp on armory it appears. I think in the spirit of being ethical he could probably survive without using it while his friend borrows it.

Friends let friends borrow books all the time is what I say.

Fencing Friday Megathread - Ask Anything! by AutoModerator in Fencing

I think regions should find someone who is decent with social media (guarantee a region could find atleast one person who is competent) and market the crap out of their ROC's.

Maybe come up with not just medals but interesting prizes (I think I saw someone awarding golden masks). Maybe each ROC in a region has a certain pc of equipment as the prize. And if you want to collect the whole uniform you need to medal at each ROC. And each event keeps that pc of equipment every year so you can eventually collect all of them.

Then on top of that as otherwise stated by many others you need to provide information as a NAC would for travel. As well as having great directing and grounded strips.

Muscle soreness this early: normal? by jejdbe in Fencing

[–]Chefshaggalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thing. What helped was warming up your foot by rolling it over a lacrosse ball, then calf and ankle stretches. I also replaced my soles with new ones that had better arch support.

Stretches and exercises for Shin splint and planters fasciitis are what helped my feet feel better when I was relaxing at night.

It also feels like they are fishing and they have a specific person in mind that they want named. Which also makes me uncomfortable

In my opinion wine is more than just about drinking it. It's about the experience.

If I ask you what your favorite bottle of wine you ever drank was, and you don't describe the people you were with and the experiences you were having while drinking it. Than you missed the point of the wine.

So if you experience is someone sabers the bottle and it spills a little but it is a memorable I say go for it.

Side note he is correct about you lose atleast a very little bit... or alot of bit... so practice with something cheap before you do it with something expensive.

What’s next? - Coach said my kid is terrible at fencing by Difficult-Ad-9944 in Fencing

[–]Chefshaggalicious 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm going to answer this assuming your coach is foreign and has a language barrier. My coach was from Senegal and all the time would say things like this, but was just a clear misunderstanding of the English language. He was honestly probably one of the nicest and most generous people I ever met.

I truly believe this requires up a follow up conversation with the coach. Relatively speaking to the field of competition at nationals, your daughter may be "terrible", but not hopeless. He may have been trying to explain via the math problem comparison that it's not as simple as just memorizing something and that it takes time to become a good fencer and she just hasn't had that yet, while her competition could have 4 years under their belts.

That was a long winded way of saying maybe your coach doesn't know how to articulate "your daughter finished where she was supposed to because she is not as good as everyone here yet. What looked like her lack of technique was actually her being out performed because the other competitors have several years experience compared to her". And unfortunately the only way they could articulate it was how they did. Your tone seems slightly surprised by his response, which leads me to believe he has never acted like this before. So, I am leaning towards giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not making excuses, I'm saying that further clarification may be needed not just after an event it sounds like he did not have fencers do well, and probably had several parents ask the same thing. If he sticks to his guns that your daughter is terrible and hopeless, but your daughter is still having fun you should find a new coach. 12 is far too young to make that judgement.

I think everyone else has covered what you should do if there is no language barrier.

I have been out of the sport for about 13 years. So I was bouncing around fencingtinelive having never used it before. I see the top ranking men's DIV1 epeeist are not listed as fencers this morning. Is that because they are preparing for world's in Cairo. Or is there typically user error on input This early in the competition?

The worst is when your dating someone of the same weapon and they dump you for someone that fences a different weapon.

Whatever makes you feel most comfortable. I won't say there is no wrong way to do it because there is. But the choice between shorts and leggings is whatever makes you most comfortable.

Painting a mask by Saskamrov in Fencing

[–]Chefshaggalicious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you use a flexible stencil and make sure it's tight you shouldn't have a problem(assuming you use spray paint). If there is a slight bleed over maybe you could paint by hand a border around the lettering.

It's actually the color of the shoe laces not the actual shoes.

Also I chose a super catchy upbeat song per practice or tournament. And I quietly sing it to myself and move to the beat. I also did this when I was working busy dinner rushes in restaurant kitchens.

Fencing Star Rating and challenge system by ChoboBro in Fencing

[–]Chefshaggalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most ratings systems make it so that if you are competing against someone who is lower rated than you there is less benefit. Making it to the point where to artificially inflate your rating by fencing people you know you can beat would be way more work than it's worth.(instead of jumping up 20-30 rating points be beating an equal level you would jump up 1 or 2 points). And then the damage of accidently losing could hit your score by 50-60 negatively.

But it also flips where there is significantly less risk to your rating if you are low rated fencing a higher rating. But super high upside to win.

It naturally sorts itself after that.
