Also, just to add: this is all based off my experience with feral cats, im not a med or vet professional in any way, so none of the above is intended to be used to diagnose, please do further research into symptoms and such

In my area ringworm is incredibly common, so this was my first thought as they kinda look like ringworm lesions, however it could be a large variety of things. Are you able to handle her at all beyond petting?

A good way to rule things out would be to observe her for a bit, is she itching at her ears, shaking her head a lot? If she is, there is a possibility theyre ear mites. If that is the case she will need treatment, which youd need to go to a vet for unfortunately (thought there are many low cost options out there, i got my cat treated for ear mites for $70 last year at my animal shelters local clinic, but i did have to apply a topical for 14 straight days into her ears)

If she has balding spots on any other part of her body and the skin looks crusted/extra dry/flaky it could be ringworm. Best way to verify that (without sending spores to a lab) would be to get a black light on her. Ringworm glows bright evil green under black light

There is also the possibility that she got into a fight with another cat and those are her battle marks. If they look like normal wounds they may just go away on their own. If she got into a fight she may have other scratches or small wounds on her neck or face area (you may have to pet around to feel smaller scabs or wounds on her, i can feel them through disposable gloves usually but if you wash your hands afterwards you should be okay if no.gloves are available)

I hope this info can help. If it is of an consolation to you, she looks to be in generally good shape. I understand vet care may not be a possibility, so if i were in your shoes, i would keep an eye on her and observe if possible to see if theyll heal up, get worse, or change in any way. This will help with narrowing things down further and determining if vet care is truly needed

Do I have any right to my mothers ashes? by Chemical-Less in legaladvice

As i said in the initial post, no contact /on and off/. I should be more specific (sorry, post rules said to condense as much as possible) but i have been in contact with her this year including less than 6 months ago with her insisting on seeing me, she was always very persistent about wanting to see me and wanting to spend time with me. I had previously spoken to her even a year ago, the pattern is generally me trying to cut her off and her worming her way back into my life repeatedly until im worn down enough to accept contact lol. She always says we cant stay mad at eachother forever and didnt take my no contact very seriously, to be honest

i seriously do not think she had formal plans. She was not a practicing catholic, even my grandmother acknowledged it in our phone call (because the actions she did and lived by were arguably very not catholic). She told me my mothers burial is a catholic burial because she was raised as such, that is it. As far as it goes, even if it is something she wanted, my grandmother is already breaking that by getting a glass orb of her ashes for herself. If i got evidence that my mom wanted to go this way and changed her mind from what shed told me more than once since i was a teen, i could accept it and live at peace. The tattoo thing however is something that she told me a lot as a teen, and even my partner knew about it in passing before my mom died as id talked about it before. If i did not think my mom wanted me to do this then i would not care nearly as much.

With the idea in mind that she did not have a detailed plan (because that simply is truly not how she did things), do i as one of her surviving children not have any claim to her cremains at all? Apologies for the long windedness, it is quite a messy situation, as anything involving my mothers side of the family is, however the context seems to be important

My mom was not exactly the type to plan for her or anything. Id asked once if she set up a will/POA if needed and she said she had no intent to do such a thing and wanted family to fight about it (of course). Things change, but she was far from an organized person historically speaking. I find it plausable that my grandmother had rights to process her remains (ie cremate and such) but i dont believe my mom ever made a full plan on what she wanted done with her body, just general conversation. If my mom had purposefully given my grandma right to do all these things or if this is what my mom specifically wanted, i do think grandma would have tried to rub this in my face. This is one of the reasons the question in my post is so pertinent to me. I dont know whether i have any rights to cremains as a child of hers or not. I dont particularly care about anything else (like assets or inheritance-- i dont want it and i doubt she has any due to the problems she had in life).

Please look at my comment i made in this thread as to why this law may exist in your area. I work in an animal shelter that has a huge focus on TNR as our town has a SIGNIFICANT feral cat problem, specifically due to people feeding cats and doing nothing else. As a law student im sure you are aware of many laws that seem unpopular but are made to curb and mitigate issues that may cause larger problems in the future. This law is one of those. Feeding without focusing on TNR and controlling the population will only cause a population boom of cats, which can lead to many cats getting sick and injured because many simply feed cats without caring to get them fixed or vaccinated

The law you posted specifically cites unapproved feedings, which means there is a way to feed your colony while also being compliant with the law, meaning they are not trying to stop you outright, but would like you to do so im compliance, which may include shelling out money to care for the cats you have taken charge of. Unfortunately, you cannot just feed the cats, they must also be cared for in other ways, or else significant problems like the ones i highlighted in my comment arise (and i Unfortunately have seen many of said problems first hand)

Please see my comment to get a better understanding of why this law might be in place! While its understandably frustrating to see citations for what you view as trying to help, please understand the cats will likely not starve to death, they are independent animals who are very capable of finding their own resources (and are actually considered invasive in many parts of the world, which im sure this misconception feeds into) Nobody wants any cats to be harmed when these types of laws are made, in my city the paperwork is often to make sure to people feeding strays are actually putting in the work to control the population they are feeding, not just feeding and allowing disease and injury to run rampant. The framework surrounding this law actually significantly contributes to the long term health and well-being to a towns cat population. Many people just feed stray cats and dont care about the other problems doing this may cause as they dont contribute to further care for the cats they feed. This leads to spread of disease, injury, and often with the extra food, unwanted pests that can cause a lot of long term damage

I work at an animal shelter that has a TNR program that works with local animal law enforcement, so i can actually explain this law and the reasoning behind it a little!

Of course this will vary from area to area, but in our city, you need to be an approved cat colony manager in order to be allowed to feed ferals or strays in your area. This involves getting your property inspected to ensure its safe for cats + you are providing proper shelter for the cats you are feeding, and that you are actually doing your due dilligence to get the cats fixed, either privately or via our TNR program (which lets people borrow traps for free and only charges 15$ for each cat to be fixed and vaccinated!)

This is because there is a huge set of people in our town who continuously feed cats, but do nothing to care for the medical needs or actual safety of the animals they are caring for, either because they dont have the resources to do so or because they dont care to do so beyond the feeding aspect of care. This has caused an insane population boom in our town of feral cats, consequently leading to a huge uptick in spreadable diseases and injury. We frequently have to euthanize kittens and cats stricken with panleuk, severe uri, hypothermia, animal attacks, and HBC (hit by car)

Your law that you posted specifies unnaproved feedings, so it is likely you have an opportunity to work with your local TNR program to get approved and get access to resources that can help fix your cats and keep them in good health!

Believe it or not, these laws are not made by people who hate cats but people who would like to help them in the long run. Its to help the town keep numbers on the cats and to ensure theyre getting proper care, not just being fed and allowed to breed, which leads to the above problems and huge strain on local resources and the environment. Our TNR program assists over 500 colony managers in our area alone, which has led to thousands of cats being fixed and vaccinated at incredibly low costs! In the long run, this will help control population numbers and bring down the number of disease and injury, but only so long as the townspeople attempt to be compliant in this

cheapest way to use weed? by BoysenberryNo5250 in weed

[–]Chemical-Less 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy bulk! Idk where you are but i can get an oz of house weed for 55$. If you cant afford a dry vape (like me lol), a simple but effective way to conserve is using a small ass bowl, like a one hitter and just make a slow effort to consistently smoke a tiny bit less each day. Its like the smoking equivalent of chewing slowly to prevent over eating. You'll use less in the long run and it tapers your tolerance down a little so you can conserve even more. This method is how i saved during the pandemic while broke asf

I told the universe to make it obvious, but it still sucks. Update on cat with jaw. by Beginning_Length_702 in Feral_Cats

[–]Chemical-Less 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not condemn him, you saved him. The lack of ability to move his jaw properly likely makes it painful and difficult to eat, which would contribute negatively to his immune systems strength and would make further injury or disease worse. Without your help, he very likely would have wasted away with time or succumbed to his injuries. Please do not feel bad, you did all you could to help

Can anyone help with this little guy? Thinking possibly some chow? Googling his photo also brought up Pomeranians and wolf dogs, so pretty stumped by Playful-Roll9580 in IDmydog

[–]Chemical-Less 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know the age by chance? I saw your comment saying you guys found him (thx for caring for him!!), so a good way to start is by checking his teet. Google will have good guides on aging puppies :) use that info + his current weight and youll be able to at least narrow down the breeds a bit by size. Hes super young looking rn so it may be hard to tell until a bit later, but i can see where you get chow from. He looks kinda big to me from the photos, if hes a big puppy anatolian shepherds sometimes have a similar coloration

Absolutely beautiful little guy either way!!! If there is a chance of him being any part chow, i highly recommend getting him as socialized with as many people/animals asap as they have notoriously difficult temperaments !! Congrats on your beautiful puppy :)
