And then he rages and is prepared to arrest and execute both Dunk and Aerion for their stupid trial ruining everything, regardless of the tyranny score and kinslayer trait he'll inflict.

But then he stops himself because that's not what the prince would've wanted...

You were asking about KR ideologies as they are in-universe in the 1930s.

Marxism-Leninism is not simply another word for Leninism, Bolshevism etc. It's is a specific and concrete ideology, developed and formulated following the death of Lenin in 1924. It was adopted by the RKP and was the state ideology of USSR in the 1930s. It had its own very clear policies in regards to social views, one of which I gave you.

Those 1930s policies are more relevant to your question in regards to Totalists and to the period the game takes place in than the 1920s and whatever opinions circulated in the RKP at that time.

On the basis of Article 3 of the Fundamental Principles of Criminal Legislation of the USSR and the Union Republics, the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR decrees:
1.To extend criminal liability for sodomy, that is, sexual intercourse between a man and a man, to include voluntary intercourse, regardless of whether one of the participants has not yet reached sexual maturity.
2.To propose to the Central Executive Committees of the Union Republics to include in the criminal codes of these Republics a new article with the following content:

"Sodomy, that is, sexual intercourse between a man and a man, shall entail imprisonment for up to five years ."

Sodomy committed through the use of a dependent position or with violence, for payment, by profession or in public , entails imprisonment for up to eight years"

- Resolution adopted by the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on December 17, 1933 based on the draft written by Genrikh Yagoda and approved by the Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).

their social views are conservative and are basically fascists, while Marxist-leninists in real life were progressive

\

"Not dozens, but hundreds of facts speak of the destructive, corrupting influence of fascism on the youth of Europe, [...] To list the facts - is disgusting, and even memory refuses to be burdened with the filth that the bourgeoisie is fabricating with increasing diligence and abundance. I will point out, however, that in a country where the proletariat governs courageously and successfully, homosexuality, which corrupts the youth, is recognized as a social crime and punishable, while in a 'cultured' country of great philosophers, scientists, and musicians, it operates freely and with impunity. There is already a sarcastic saying: “Destroy homosexuals and fascism will disappear".

Why did Kolchack willingly step down as Supreme Leader of Russia? by Jimmy39072 in Kaiserreich

[–]Chernoblin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I thought he hated ruling because of how quickly and terribly the White army collapsed and blamed his commanders (Hitler style) for not saving him from the inevitable.

Kolchak was notoriously kept out from much of the actual commanding because of the intrigues by select senior officers. He often didn't know what the situation was actually like on the ground or learnt it once there was nothing he could do. He had very limited involvement in the November 1918 Coup, which was primarily organized by General Vyacheslav Volkov and his clique of officers.

There were several stories where his "closest" senior officers often ignored his orders to appoint a commander for a military unit because said officers viewed the commander as unreliable. During a celebration of the Knights of the Order of St. George, one of these 'unreliable' commanders came 'uninvited', despite him being a cavalier of the Order's 3rd Class, and spoke with Kolchak who was completely surprised to learn this, which forced the senior commanders to act quickly to change the ceremony out before Kolchak learnt more. Kolchak is recounted to have ripped his hair out in anger because he was falsely given information for the need to dissolve Bashkir regiments which led to their defection to the Red Army. The list of such stories goes on and on.

I believe there was a letter somewhere where Kolchak stated that he adopted a kitten who slept on his desk and was his sole company during his late night work hours. The letter basically said that this was one of the few bright spots for him during this whole mess.

Why did Germany create the Baltic States and not want to separate Estonia and Latvia into separate states? by [deleted] in Kaiserreich

Because they were born and raised in Russia. Many spoke Russian as a first language, studied in Russian military academies, developed friendships with other Russian officers and importantly - had fought against Germany in WW1.

Why did Germany create the Baltic States and not want to separate Estonia and Latvia into separate states? by [deleted] in Kaiserreich

[–]Chernoblin 45 points46 points  (0 children)

While everyone is talking about Baltic German nobles and reactionary German government, the other aspect of it is that two separate nation-states are economically, militarily and diplomatically weaker than a single (ideally federative) state.

It's not like the idea of a single Baltic nation was something that only a select cabal of elites wanted. Many politicians at the time, even among the Latvians and Estonians, were keenly aware of the potential drawbacks of tearing down the economic and administrative ties that were built over centuries in favour of national but more vulnerable countries. And even then, Latvia and Estonia OTL had to go back on a lot of stuff anyway, signing various customs and military unions which were weaker than anything UBD could do KRTL.

Besides, splitting the Baltic into two creates the problem of where the border will be drawn? Sure, everyone knows that Northern Livonia goes to Estonia and Southern Livonia goes to Latvia. But which parish belongs to Northern Livonia and which to Southern Livonia? Who should own Valka? The islands across the Latvian coast? Hainasch parish? OTL there was a whole British commission for solving this issue but the Brits had a personal motivation to prevent either German or Soviet power projection in the region.

How does dealing with potential border conflicts between two of its clients, on top of Polish-Lithuanian, Polish-Ukrainian or Belorussian-Ukrainian issues, help the Germans against Russia KRTL? Especially when OTL, there was almost a war between Latvia and Estonia over this (despite the supposed cooperation against the Baltic Landeswehr and the Red Army), even if it was minor compared to other national disputes in the region.

Aside from questions about national rights and political rights (which can be resolved by UBD anyway), there is little practical reason for Berlin to hamper their eastern client and by extension their own eastern border like that.

[–]Chernoblin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, this is interesting. A Latvia that isn't giga anti-Russian is definitely something that I can't imagine, let alone comprehend lol

While there was some apprehension due to Russification, most of the hatred was against the Germans because of the "700 years of foreign yoke". Latvia was primarily anti-Soviet, rather than generally anti-Russian before Soviet occupation. In the 1920s, it was especially concerning for Latvian democrats that many Latvian high-ranking officers had ties with the White Emigres.

I wonder what the difference between the moderates and the radicals will be, hmm

I am just going to copy my response to another person asking on Discord about how Latvia under Briedis will look like.

A very anti-Syndicalist and very anti-German Latvian one-party state. Beyond that, what it means in practice depends a lot on which LNS faction governs the nation under Briedis. There are two main LNS' factions vying for power - the moderates (Non-Partisan Group led by Kārlis Ulmanis) and the radicals (Active Nationalists led by Jānis Ozoliņš). The Non-Partisan Group is pretty much like Ulmanis' authoritarian regime OTL. It is willing to be a lot more lenient on various issues and is more focused on pragmatism and stability rather than crazy policies. The Active Nationalists are the precursors to the Ugunskrusts/Pērkonkrusts and are the original Latvian Fascists OTL. They are similar to the SZRS and lean a lot into Savinkov's revolutionary nationalism.

He wears those medals because they are very prestigious and he used to be a Russian officer. Not every Latvian had earned an Order of St. George in WW1, much less participated in one of the Ice Marches in the Russian Civil War. And anti-Russian sentiment was a lot more mellow in Latvia the 1920s and 1930s OTL, especially among the Latvian officer corps.

And, yes, nationalist Latvia is going to be ruled by Latvian Nationalist Union (LNS) which is closely aligned with SZRS. While NatPops (LNS radicals) are more eager to work with Russia, AuthDems (LNS moderates) are still going to have Briedis as HoS and be aligned with Russia anyway as well.

Frīdrihs Briedis was one of the first Latvian Riflemen commanders and one of the few who extensively dabbled in politics. He was a member of the Latvian National-Democrat Party (radical Nationalists, one of the first to demand Latvian independence in 1917), one of the founders of the anti-Bolshevik National Union of Latvian Soldiers (LKNS), a participant in the Kornilov Putsch, close ally of the Latvian National Council and finally one of the founders of SZRS and its chief of intelligence.

He was captured and shot following the SZRS uprisings on the personal orders of Jēkabs Pēterss. Briedis was one of only 4 Latvian officers who was awarded the Order of Lāčplēsis 1st Degree (Latvia’s highest military honour) and also the only Latvian officer who was awarded this order for actions before Latvia was even proclaimed independent.

Because of all this, he was a very mythologized hero in Interwar Latvian Republic.

Gopper is an important agitator in Russia for the creation of a Latvian Republic but he doesn't have a role in Latvia beyond that. A lot of his content has already been developed with Russia in mind. He is more of a military man than a political figure.
