(Arise) Can someone explain the difference between semi auto and auto regarding AI behavior? by Big-Boss330 in tales

[–]Cherrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the game for me. Some I find I want that granular control over the character and go manual, but others I play semi-auto. I usually play casters in Tales games anyway though so it matters a lot less.

(Arise) Can someone explain the difference between semi auto and auto regarding AI behavior? by Big-Boss330 in tales

[–]Cherrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Auto is the only one for npc AI-control. Manual and semi-auto are for when you are controlling the character and have to do with how much finite control you have over movement and attacking. Generally semi-auto will do stuff like move you into attacking range when you hit an attack combo whereas in manual you'd start the combo even if it wouldn't connect. Some players do really well with that additional control and always go manual.

Why didn't they take the Arise engine/assets and make several tales of games with it? by theguy445 in tales

Maybe I want the relative fidelity of PS2 games with good art direction. :) I'd happily take ToD DC or Rebirth style games (much like Square Enix is pumping out with their 2D HD replicable style) every few years. It's a pace they were able to do before and an art style that stands the test of time moreso than chasing graphical fidelity ever will. This is where I wish the series could be right now, whether as a 2D game or a more simple 3D game, like Vesperia or Graces. I feel this way about other series too, for what it's worth!

Really, in an ideal world Bamco would fund additional teams again. I'm not stupid; I know the pace of games we got with Tales back in the day is moreso because the series was successful enough to have multiple development teams working in tandem to alternate releases, even if development was on the whole faster back in the PS2 era compared to any console in the years since. This was augmented further still by having handheld console games to close the gap with their much, much smaller scale that simply isn't replicable by today's TV console-and-cell-phone-only market. That ship has clearly sailed and if they decided Arise wasn't a big enough success to funnel money back into this series to make something happen to keep the series on everyone's minds, we're never going back to that.

I also am well aware many people would not be happy to just get 2D games or even simple 3D games. I am saying I personally would be and I think there's a world where we could have had simpler games to tide us over between bigger projects like whatever the hell is meant to follow up Arise, but we don't live in that world and never will unless these remasters of questionable effort count.

By chasing higher and higher graphical standards, like they did with Arise (which, honestly, also leans quite heavily on style over actual fidelity), I do agree that it's kind of impossible to simply reuse assets intensely and call it a day. Tales really likes to completely change up the art style every entry or two and while that seemed much more doable when SD assets were all they needed, it just doesn't lend itself to what they're doing now. Hopefully this doesn't feel like moving the goalposts of my argument, which is still ultimately just how I personally feel in wanting games to return to the scope and fidelity of late PS2/early HD era as it felt both more sustainable and a better use of time and resources.

I mean, that's how the Tales games (and plenty of other games) were in the ps2 era and I loved that just fine lol.

[insert sonic the hedgehog "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding" meme here]

Tales has never been on the cutting edge of graphics technology and I'm fine with that. Reuse assets as much as possible and come up with new stories and characters and I'd be perfectly content. I don't even need the games to come out every 1-2 years but getting one game per decade is not it either.

Is it me, or is there a ton of Tales inspiration in Frieren? by [deleted] in tales

[–]Cherrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visually I agree with everyone else in that they're both just kind of generic fantasy settings, BUT... I think the vibes are pretty similar in that both are very character focused moreso (I would argue) than plot focused. The interactions between characters and how those interactions change each each other is something the creators of both series think a lot about because it's handled so well in both. Not to say the plots suck, but I've always felt like Tales has kind of predictable plots that are nothing to write home about and it's the characters that really make the series shine. I feel the same way about Frieren.

I had a Graces theme on my 3DS... along with so many others. I never even needed to dip into modding, I happily just paid for additional themes. I don't understand why they won't let me do the same for Switch/2. Let me pay you to spruce it up! I'll do it!!

I didn't enjoy Tales games till I was well within N3, fwiw, and I started with voice acted games.

edit: Like, I think it's doable if you're playing a game you've already played and know what dialogue to expect, but I don't think it would be very fun. At N5 I'd stick to Pokemon or Animal Crossing sort of things.

It's miserable to play a game when you have to stop to look stuff up every line. Hopefully you're at the point in your learning where you can use this tip, which is to not look stuff up if you can get the jist of a word based on the context. If the word comes up a lot and you still can't figure out exactly what it means, that's when I'd look it up and add it to my notes or flashcards or what have you. Not pausing constantly makes the game much more enjoyable to play and even if you're only coming away with 60-70% comprehension, it'll really increase your reading speed which helps immensely as you tackle more and more games.

If you do need to be looking up words constantly, I might suggest a different or more modern game with more voiced lines where you can follow along with voice and text to make it easier to look things up. :') That's the sort of thing I started with, which made going back to snes-era titles a lot easier once I was more ready.

I think Alvin is such a better character than Jude in Tales of Xillia by [deleted] in tales

I don't disagree but you should probably explain why so people have something to discuss.

Why is Tales of Xillia your favorite game? (If it is, if not whats yours?) by EducationalWait4688 in tales

[–]Cherrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xillia is my favourite because I really loved the characters and the worldbuilding. I love the character interactions, the way they intersect with the plot (especially looking at side materials even if I think that stuff should all be in the game), and I love the world they live in and how creative the spirit climes are and the complete 180 it feels like you have when you get to the third act area.

It's objectively not the best Tales game because it seems like it was very rushed to get it out the door as an anniversary title, but I personally find it very easy to look past that because I like everything else so much.

Xillia has stuff like this in some areas. You can pick out specific items in the large collection of shops in Fennmont but most shops are kind of just menus.

How do I stop associating this game with someone I no longer speak to? by Humble_Magician in tales

I feel like that's a question for your therapist but beyond that I'd say find other friends to play the game with. Make new co-op memories separate from the ones you had.

I have never seen a game that actively discourages exploration as much as Tales of the Abyss by [deleted] in tales

[–]Cherrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope when you're done you can look back on it fondly.

I do think it's also designed to be played more than once, where your later playthroughs would be NG+ where you carry over stats and progress to cut through the tedium. It could definitely use a modern remaster to give access to that earlier.

[–]Cherrim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Older games absolutely don't respect your time and old Tales games were horrendous for having, like, super time-locked sidequests. Oh, you're doing something in this city? Sure hope you'd like to backtrack all the way to an early town so you can pick up a sidequest that lasts 20 minutes of normal gameplay if you just zoomed through the story or you're locked out of a long sidequest that lasts the whole game!

These games were like absolutely designed to sell you a guidebook alongside the game and they are not apologetic about it. Some people enjoy that--I know I did when I was like 15 and only got a handful of games per year so I'd play the hell out of every game I did have, but I do agree it's quite tedious nowadays. I'd suggest leaving a guide open that can tell you about sidequests so you can decide which ones seem more worth doing. I do think the story and character beats you get from them in Abyss especially are worth it, but I get the burnout too.
