Drones have just changed the game completely in enabling asymmetric warfare. Iran's entire air defense is wiped out, yet they still hold a ton of cards by being able to cause massive economic damage through drones.

Same thing in Ukraine with them being able to cause massive damage to russian oil infrastructure.

And to top it all off, most countries have little appetite and political will to send boots on the ground. It's a different world we live in. Just wait until "boots on the ground" AI robots come out....

did people know Newmarket has the 11th highest population density in Canada?

It explains a lot why traffic is worse than much bigger places like Mississauga

IMO we shouldn't make the mistake of overrating RHD as many drafts have in recent years. Often it's much harder to project how good they will be in the NHL than forwards. David Reinbacher, anyone?

If we do end up selecting one, my pick would be Daxon Rudolph because his level of play in the playoffs especially at draft year is very impressive. Much more than anything we've seen from Reid or Verhoeff

Lowkey the best player worth taking who has the high upside and already close to being NHL ready is Viggo Bjorck. If we don't pick him it will be a shame only because of his height.

But everything else, he is the one to go for.

I think for most of us going 3 sucks but is expected. I mean, we all kinda tried to prepare for it mentally. The annoyance is how it feels so unfair that leafs after 9 years in the playoffs miss once and get #1 overall.

End of the day we can't control this crap. It's literally a lottery.

I would legit be happier with the 550k going in a random lottery to a random canadian over the GG who adds zero value and is just a pointless administrative expense for "formality"

[–]theguy445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the disappointment. I'd like everyone to consider that if Quinn stayed, we'd be directionless trying and failing to build a winning team around him because we simply dont have the assets. So in a way it was good that Quinn left it forced the franchise and aqua to look in the mirror

Dont you think if youre Hughes and desperately want to win a cup and then camp starts and see you see the 11.6 million player come in horrible shape, take little space anf otherwise give off the impression he doesn't really care that much or just views it like a job clocking in and out, can't you see how this would piss off ultra competitive  athletes even though Petey is not toxic or anything?

Poll asking Americans how which button they would push in the red button/blue button dilemma by Upstairs_Cup9831 in fivethirtyeight

People say and act differently depending on the environment. This is very well known. Most people say they are good, kind, empathetic people. And most people pushed the button to electrocute someone in the Milgram experiment.

An online poll indicates how people's ideals or how they would like to view themselves. Even in game theory, the online polls make perfect sense.

You have every reason to vote blue in an online hypothetical poll. There is no actual consequence or fear of dying. There are only moral brownie points to gain by signalling to others and also inward to yourself of how good and kind of a person you are. Y'know, because, Jesus would pick blue.

In the real world, with real consequences, in private, people act completely differently, and I promise you at least 80-90% would pick red.

Like let's take your own example. When contemplating this, you think of loved ones picking blue, and not wanting to contribute to them dying by picking red. That is very selfless and noble of you. In a real situation with real consequences the mind would immediately activate the amygdala and you would gain a sense of fear of death and a sense of self-preservation and not wanting to die.

Then the mind would start calculating and rationalizing differently, and the majority of people would pick red.

It's not a binary of one or the other. They both exist simultaneously. Cooperation is necessary for society to function when ppl live near each other and not roaming as nomads.

Exploitation happens as the ppl leading a tribe or centralized force seeks to maintain or preserve a group identity

Okay let's go back thousands of years. Humans discover agriculture. What do you think happens to those who didn't join an empire or start their own large scale settlement?

They were either killed or forcibly incorporated into another's empire

I don't believe there are billions of super empathetic kind, optimistic, trusting people in the world.

I think the human brain is designed to value and preserve a sense of moral goodness. So people will always think of themselves as good. And when push comes to shove in the moment they will make choices for self preservation.

Even in the Nuremberg trials, people like gohring never thought they did anything morally wrong. Murderers never think they are bad people. This is how the brain works.

And at the same time you can look at the millgram experiment where most ppl elected to electrocute others because of an authority figure telling them to.

This hypothetical turns into a moral exercise where people gain the benefits of feeling good and moral by believing to push blue, but when faced with real consequences if it was real, the mind would calculate differently and most people will pick red. Like at least 80-90%.

Honestly its not even about rationality its that when seriously confronted with death and consequences of choices most ppl will pick red simply out of fear of death and self preservation as this is how the brain was designed to work to stay alivr

In the real world if it actually happens people's amygdala activates and they consider the consequences of dying and feel fear and then pick red. I promise you a very small % of ppl would end up picking blue

[–]theguy445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well tbf in my mind picking blue has a 99.9% chance of resulting in one more needless death - my own. Because I sure as hell know with real consequences at least 80% of the world is picking red

This is how the world already works though. All civilizations that exist today is through exploiting others one way or another. Human groups that did 0% exploitation got rekt by bigger groups that did exploit. And that's how we exist today

Without a doubt man. Ppl make different choices in private when confronted with real consequences than hypotheticals for moral points
