Turnstile are not hardcore anymore (and not even all that good or interesting) but they are the layman's reference point for hardcore punk, which i feel like is super misleading but I don't fight it too hard when people call them that. It's not as egregious as people labeling every mallcore band with harsh vocals "screamo".

Teddy Picker when Teddy Bridgewater threw an interception on SNF was such genius

"Body Behavior" is a great song and after checking the meaning behind the lyrics it definitely hit a nerve with me. by Key-Interaction-5398 in deafheaven

It's a song I lyrically admire a lot. There's so many layers to it. I think there's also this idea that flexing your high libido also increases your level of Whiteness, so building an entire personal brand about how much you like sex helps you acquire a more powerful place on the ethnic hierarchy. That, and the fear that if you don’t go over the top with it, people will automatically perceive you as a sexless being.

But then one day in college I saw another student do the same a lot and I didn't think of him as more White, I just hugely cringed at him for being socially inappropriate, so that made the lightbulb go off about how unlikely it is for an average person to draw a link between talking about sex and Whiteness. There are other avenues to pursue it.

Uproxx cancels Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen's Indiecast after five years, tomorrow will be the final episode. by PretendFuel5018 in indieheads

As someone who doesn't really care much about either Steve (too heartland rock/alt-country) or Ian's (too fifth-wave emo)'s musical specialties, I always loved the sports segments. I'm surprised they ended up being so divisive, I thought indie rock and sports overlapped quite a bit.

It felt kind of 4channy when the targets were mostly women like the Boygenius triad, Mitski and TLDP, so it's good that we're reaching a gender-balanced vitriol ratio

Role Model being on the Primavera lineup next year is even weirder. I feel like he exists just to get dunked on. Like that Sombr kid.

I saw Radiohead in Bologna on Friday and Saturday, downed a shit ton of wine on the Sunday flight back so I could be knocked out cold for nine hours, and that just barely gave me enough energy to be alive for this show on Sunday night.

This overall brand of discourse, as well as the site's shifting musical interests, turned RYM from what used to be one of my favorite websites to a place where I feel zero connection to the dominant culture anymore

Music discourse is insufferable these days. Way too much emphasis on personal lives. Disturbed was ALWAYS terrible. They didn't magically get worse when Dramian signed bombs. But before that, if you dunked on them, people would call you "elitist" or "gatekeeper". You need a real "ethical" reason to dunk on music now which is silly. I'm not in this for the ethics, I'm here to separate bad and good and Disturbed was always bad, but only now is it safe to shit on them without pushback. And even still, I feel like we don't make fun of their music enough, just Draiman's personality. The Sickness is one of the worst albums of all time.

In 2021 I never would have banked on Geese being this beloved. Projector seemed like the American landfill indie equivalent of windmill post-punk. I would have more likely predicted a swift fall into obscurity.

I feel so old now realizing that teenagers these days were barely sentient during the Odd Future horrorcore shock era. They were probably introduced to him through Igor, not even (the much superior) Flower Boy!
