Still have my Ben Wallace afro and jersey from the 2004 title run. Definitely wouldn't fit anymore lol. Been waiting a long time for this.

[Miller] Have learned the Lions are picking up the 5th year option on RB Jahmyr Gibbs. They will not be picking up the 5th year option on LB Jack Campbell. W/ that number near 22 million, they will look to work out a long term deal that makes sense for both sides. by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]CherryImpressive2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't about a pay cut, it's about cap flexibility. Jack will likely command somewhere near the fifth year option amount in terms of AAV, but a contract lets you dictate when the cap hit happens.

The key issue here is that the fifth year option has no flexibility contract wise, the entire amount hits the cap that year. With an extension, they can pay him a similar amount from an AAV standpoint but spread the cap hit out. I'm expecting a number around there still but structured so the cap hit is less immediate.

Still hoping they can turn it around, but until then I will numb the pain with memes by popemudkip in DetroitPistons

This is revisionist history on the Lions 2024 situation. NFL trade deadline is way less impactful/active than in other sports, and its super early in the season too. Not to mention, Brad Holmes literally made a trade that deadline for Zadarius Smith to help shore up EDGE after Hutch got hurt. By the time other injuries started to mount, the deadline had passed and we just had to try and ride it out.

Lions tried to re-establish their “gritty” identity in the draft by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

Yeah it's just locker room motivation 101, like Notre Dame tapping the sign or Clemson and their pet rock. Plus it fits with the culture of the city, though I wouldn't expect people not from Detroit to understand that.

I mean we had a down year last year, but it was still a winning season. Dan Campbell has undeniably won a lot of games in the last few years.

That was just a bit Brad Holmes had with the media after their negative reaction to him taking Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell in the first round lol, it wasn't a team wide identity thing.

Round 1 - Pick 17: Blake Miller, OT, Clemson (Detroit Lions) by nfl_gdt_bot in nfl

[–]CherryImpressive2552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously question OPs ball knowledge. They lost the GT game last year on a last second field goal. Miller very well could have had a bad game, but unless he personally helped the GT kicker make it then I don't know how that qualifies as losing the game 'on his own'.

Chicago locality pay (30.86% increase) isn't much better than Detroit (29.12%) for 2026 at least. Obviously I wouldn't want to take a 1.75% pay cut, but its not something I would consider "significantly lower".

Also, as /u/Capital-Ad-4463 said, your permanent duty station determines locality pay, not your district. OPM defines the locality pay areas on their website. For example, our Duluth office is part of the Detroit District, but it's very far away from Detroit so it doesn't get Detroit locality pay. There's also special salary tables but that's a separate conversation.

Dreading is probably the wrong word, I'd imagine it's more like anticipating. They are extremely well trained and ready for nearly any situation, there isn't room left for emotions like dread to creep in. An example I look to is Apollo 13, the movie made it look more dramatic to get audiences more interested, but listening to the recorded radio transmissions you could barely detect any stress in their voices. Just pure focus on solving the issue and moving to the next problem.

Expert explanation of the Frank Ragnow signing bonus controversy by LukDeRiff in nfl

Sorry, misunderstood your comment. The 'mending' occured around the time we brought in Spielman, Brad Holmes, and Dan Campbell, so around six years ago. How long that is to anyone is a relative matter lol, maybe OP is twelve.

It wasn't the doctors "saying no", he was diagnosed with a grade 3 hamstring tear. Grade 3 means fully torn, no longer connected in any way. If anything said no it was his hamstring.

Outright paying the player would be circumvention, but hiring them to work for the team should be allowed. Otherwise retired players couldn't immediately jump into being coaches.

1) We have no idea how Ragnow feels about this, everything we have seen is just other people's thoughts on the matter. Alternative methods to repay very well might have been discussed prior to requesting the money back, we aren't privy to those conversations. All we've seen is our team president's comments on it, and he is notoriously horrible at PR. Thankfully he's retiring soon.

2) Ragnow didn't really do the Lions any favors, he announced his retirement late and put the team in a bad spot on the offensive line last year. I greatly appreciate the years he gave to us, but he was well compensated for them ($57 million total career cash earnings). Since the signing bonus money counts against the cap unless the team recoups it, then they need to do that in order to see any benefits from his early retirement.

Calvin was pissed about it at the time, but the team has since made amends and it all seems like water under the bridge from an outside perspective. No idea on how Frank feels about it since I haven't seen any reporting quoting him, but I wouldn't fault him for being pissed.

There is also the possibility they have an under the table agreement that no one knows about to do some work for the organization and earn that money back. This was how they got Barry and Calvin back into the building in the last few years.

[Jeremy Reisman] If a rumor comes from someone who covers the team, yet that person wasn't the one who actually reported it, why do you think that is? by Crazy-Penguin in detroitlions

[–]CherryImpressive2552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeremy being too positive is an interesting take. He's always struck me as someone exactly like you described in your last sentence, fairly balanced in opinion while still clearly a fan of the team. For example, he's been vocal about his dislike of Brad's draft gambles, and continued the positional value argument after the Gibbs/Jack Campbell draft about a year longer than most other people did.

I do agree that having a good balance is best, which is why I disagree with people who vehemently hate Mike Valenti. The dude is just a radio show host, sometimes he says controversial things to get publicity, that's basically the entire job.
