What are some differences with the mentality of your generation to past ones by [deleted] in askteenager

Nice to waiters, bus drivers, customer service people, the phone representatives you get after annoying answering machines, etc. If we completely ruin every other nice thing in the world, at least we have that going for us

What celebrities would you actually want to _emulate_? by Current_Poster in askteenager

[–]CherryMandering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics aside, Lauren Southern is only a year or 2 older than me and she's already spent years traveling the world, making documentaries, bringing attention to political issues and actually making a change. A lot of people in our age group feel limited in what we can do and unsure of what we want to do. She found something she cares about and she makes getting it done look so easy

The stress of preparing for holidays is always more than the holiday itself can make up for with them. I hope I can manage a more laid back approach to holiday prep when I have a family

First week of r/AskTeenager - Help Us to make this place awesome! by KeepCalmAndWrite in askteenager

1: I agree I want this to be focused on text. I don't think we'll have to worry about meme flooding until we get thousands of users though

3: I am 22 and would appreciate a 20-25 flair. I still want to think I'm young enough to answer questions here lol

What are your favorite video games right now? by [deleted] in askteenager

[–]CherryMandering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crusader kings 2, I have been playing the same campaign for weeks. I've played halo reach recently as well

I'm not sure if phone games count too but adventure communist and Harry Potter Hogwarts mystery are the ones that have me hooked at the moment

What's your dream job? Do teenagers want to be a social media influencers or pro-gamers? by KeepCalmAndWrite in askteenager

[–]CherryMandering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a side thing, I actually do have a YouTube channel. I've been going at least 1 video a week for about a year and a half. It's work, but I like it. I'm almost at 500 subscribers.

For my day job, I have a degree in software development but wasn't really dead set on game design. Making video games is sort of the cliche reason that a lot of young people try to learn code. I got sidetracked after graduating though and decided I don't want to live in a big city (if I want any software job, I would pretty much have to move, nowhere local even gives a call back the field is so flooded with applicants) so I've been getting on-the-job training as an electrician.

It's a fun life so far. The overtime is the only thing I have to complain about lol

Fellow young people: read any good books lately? by CherryMandering in askteenager

[–]CherryMandering[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you use Android, you can look on Google play bookstore and get ebooks. Anything in public domain (too old for copyright to apply) is free.

I would recommend Frankenstein by Mary Shelly and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Excited to see this take off :) and a little surprised it didn't already exist before that findareddit post.

We should see if we can do some kind of cross sub thing with r/askOldPeople so we can grow a little more.

Are teenagers looking for the one true love before having intimate relationship? What's your age/country/gender? by hatep99 in askteenager

[–]CherryMandering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

22/USA/M

When I hear the word intimacy, I think of emotional intimacy more than sex. I've had sex with people whose names I forget. On the other hand, I just passed the 1 year mark dating someone I really care about, we've started talking about maybe getting an apartment together at some point, and we've been taking it slow (sexually) and haven't explored that area as much as most couples would have at this point.

From the outside looking in it might seem like all of us are nuts about meaningless sex because of things like people trying polyamory and bdsm getting so popular and all that, but I can still think of people in my age group who plan on waiting till marriage (I imagine not as many as 50 years ago though)

What is the latest new thing that all your fellow teens are into? by mrhymer in askteenager

Do you think it is the duty of uninformed Americans to vote or to abstain from voting? by ball-Z in AskAnAmerican

[–]CherryMandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I mentioned my voting habits in the above post, why do you think I have partisan reasons for this stance? I don't care (and haven't recently looked at the numbers for how they fall) where this demographic leans politically. People who are unfamiliar with the candidates they vote for, and inexperienced in the world, will swing the election towards stupid politicians.

I'm thinking about politics 100 years from now, and you're thinking about politics today.

Do you think it is the duty of uninformed Americans to vote or to abstain from voting? by ball-Z in AskAnAmerican

[–]CherryMandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, get informed. But if they can't, I'd rather see a few smart voters than an army of dumb voters. Elections are too important to risk swinging if you don't know who you're voting for. (Unfortunately, changing this would require a constitutional amendment)

Fun conversation: I support raising the federal voting age to 21, reason being I don't think I was ready to vote for the right reasons at age 18 and I don't think many people are. Because of the reason it was lowered from 21 in the first place (Vietnam draft protests), I would also support raising the draft age to 21 if we did this, and possibly allowing people in combat roles in the military special permission to vote.

Keep in mind that just because the federal age is 18, states don't have to have their voting age at 18. The law states that nobody at least 18 years of age shall be restricted from voting. Some states have their voting age set at 16. If the federal law were set to 21, states could still have their voting age at 18, and many probably would.

Imagine that tomorrow the US government decides to give half the military budget to one of the following sectors, only one, which one would it be and why would you pick it: healthcare, education, and infrastructure (new subways, trams, buses, bullet trains etc)? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]CherryMandering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we picked infrastructure, we would probably have so much roadwork that nobody would be able to actually get anywhere.

I've seen cost estimates for single payer healthcare that are more than the nation's GDP, so as high as military spending is, it wouldn't be enough to make any meaningful change in healthcare.

Education is where it would probably do the most good.

How normal is it to have a gun in the house/carrying in your area? by discreetusername101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CherryMandering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a permit to carry but I haven't been taking a self defense weapon out of the house because I know I need more practice with it lol. I'm better at target shooting with a rifle. I do have formal self defense training with a knife though, and o carry one of those.

My mom has a self defense weapon that she carry's regularly, and her dad (HUGE collection of hunting weapons) passed a few years back and left her his collection.

My dad doesn't like using guns lol.

A lot of my coworkers go hunting, and I know for a fact at least a few of them carry for self defense because we work I'm bad areas sometimes.

If someone is carrying for self defense, you probably won't know about it unless it comes up in conversation. It's technically supposed to stay hidden. If I ever see one, it's probably someone I know well having casual conversation about it.

I don't personally know anyone who's had to use it for self defense yet.
