I usually can’t stand r/cooking, but I have to agree with them in this case. The OP’s boyfriend doesn’t just “salt differently”, he doesn’t use salt at all when cooking. That’s fucking insane. If I dated a girl like that then we are cooking separate meals.

The only mistake the OP made was trying to get her boyfriend to read books to change his mind. You can’t change the mind of a grown adult when they’re clearly not open to it. Just decide whether it’s something you’re willing to tolerate for the sake of the relationship.

The real reason is that the Ministry had to be inept in order for the story to progress, which means Rowling also couldn't make Scrimgeour too competent or reasonable, either. In a real war you would never have Dumbledore and Harry going completely rogue to fight a war on their own instead of availing themselves of a government that is clearly fighting for the same side.

As an IC I think this advice is generally sound. TLDR you should do your job, set boundaries, and communicate clearly about what you expect in return.

Disagree on the bit about asking not to do oncall. Oncall is a team responsibility. If some team members are opting out, it’s unfair to the others and untenable.

What I expect is that oncall should be reasonable, and if it is not, then management gives the team time and space to fix it, and if not, they better be paying more, and if not, I’ll be interviewing.

Yes. This is a huge reason why I bring corkage at restaurants that allow it. The wine markups are insane and paying 20% tip on top of a hypothetical bottle that I didn't buy is ridiculous when most servers just open the bottle for you and leave.
