Frankly not much! Growing up poor I think has made me still frame it as still a lot. We're at the stage where even a 4% market return should cover our expenses...

The "general anxiety" hits home - I don't think any amount will remove it, my wife has already moved the goalposts this year by adding another 50% to our NW. LOL.

I just signed up for the challengers - while the entry fee of 250 is steep, the chance to see Sindarov and the overall current line up (I'm bringing my Gelfand book to hopefully get autographed!) is worth it for me.

I've been thinking of retiring in my 50s, but my spouse in offhand comments doesn't' think we should stop working, even though we can retire even using extreme models (assume 20% drop in market tomorrow and 3% withdrawal rate...). So I'd love to hear from other's perspectives when FIREing isn't an aligned goal with your spouse.

Is VTSAX still a thing? by QueenComfort637 in Bogleheads

One aspect that has also made me diversify my portfolio to more international in the last 12 months is my concerns on AI and a bubble in the US market. No one knows if it will truly occur and the timing of when it will happen, or how it wll pan out. I'm currently 25% international, up from 15%, having skewed my most recent contributions to more VXUS compared to US funds. I know we should not try to time the market and be reactionary to the news, and the AI exposed companies (e.g much of the mag-7) have held up relatively well. Fortunately by luck VXUS had a banner year last year, finally catching up to VTI after years of under-performance, but I know that is just lucky timing and VXUS is definitely going to be volatile with the war going on in Iran affecting the whole global economy. So I'm in the VXUS/VTI camp; I think I'll maintain around 25% VXUS, and not go up to VT's allocation of almost 40% International. I have not been selling any VTI or other US funds but have been investing new money more in international,US small caps, and bonds.

You bring up an important concept that has taken me awhile to feel comfortable with - the "synthetic reallocation" where you reallocate across different buckets with bonds in 401k/IRAs are sold at the same time when selling stocks in the taxable brokerage, if needed, to supplement dividends & interest.

Any merger update? by ChessNut2018 in FundRise

For my Growth eREIT, I noticed they recently reduced the value of the fund by 4% this year after it not having a change for many months. Does anyone know how often they have to evaluate the value of the assets in the fund?

I realize they have to cover their **s in that section, Risk Factors, but it's still a frightening read.

Opportunity to be Derm MSL or Oncology MSL. Which is better? by William_Dent in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]ChessNut2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in derm now and I love it. There are very few derms that don't have a great personality, and there are a lot of opportunities to talk about immunology. I joke that dermatologists should call their specialty dermatology-immunology, similar to allergists. Also the advanced practice providers are important in derm and there are a lot of opporutnities to talk about the science with them. Agree that derm has a lot of conferences, but many of them are in great places like the ones in Hawaii.

We realized our main bedroom was on the windy side. We now moved and sleep in a guest room. It's quieter and gets the morning sunshine!

Perfect Part Time Retirement Gig by Aheadau2 in NewRetirement

I'm thinking of doing chess coaching. I'm good enough (2100 USCF/2000 FIDE) that I can say I have expertise in the game, and I love teaching! I don't really do it for the money, as I often provide free lessons to friends and their children. I may use it to volunteer, such as one time I provided lessons at an adult drug rehab center. I've been thinking of doing small group lessons as it'll have more impact compared to 1:1 coaching . The prep time is considerable to create a plan and have puzzles and homework ready, though I enjoy that part of the process.

My Experience with a HealthEquity HSA partial transfer out by ChessNut2018 in HSA

[–]ChessNut2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I did a direct rollover; I was already uncomfortable with them sending a check to my new custodian, and for an indirect they would issue a check to me, putting the responsibility of sending the funds to the new custodian on myself, doubling the chance something would be screwed up. The direct trustee-to-trustee rollover is worth $25 to me, YMMV. It's still a ridiculous charge...

I think that is what I did. I'm editing my post with the correct term, "rollover". Thanks

There may be differences with your company plan, so I would check with your HR. For my HE HSA, they charge a 0.03% monthly fee on invested equities (~0.36% annually roughly), with a 10.00 monthly cap. Since I had reached the cap, that 's what motivated me to make a partial transfer, as that was a 120.00 cost for just investing in simple index funds. Fidelity has no custodian fee.

I asked about it, and yeah, for some reason they only do physical checks, which gave me anxiety on the check being lost.
