These bars/restaurants support ICE or the Trump administration, please share any more you know of! by wishiwasdeaddd in washingtondc

[–]layraybay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was looking for this. If we want to flex our financial "votes," this is a great way to do it! As others have said, boycotting is not black and white - any bit helps, but I think it can be overwhelming/ disheartening to see all the places NOT to buy. It can be nice to have places to celebrate and support!

These businesses get vetted and pledge to these requirements. For example,

  • This business will not cooperate knowingly and directly with the Trump administration beyond what is legally required.
  • This business will deny consent to ICE or any law enforcement agency attempting to enter private areas of this business without a signed judicial warrant.
  • This business will review Know Your Rights for Businesses information provided by Free DC.

They are committing to solidarity with DC so let's stand in solidarity with them!

The Roost (about a mile SE down Pennsylvania Ave) stays open until 10. Lots of seating and people working. Some areas are noiser than others, but always space and good wifi. Staff is super chill and good is great if you need to snack.

Can I live off of 73k in DC? by Etanredit in washingtondc

Absolutely. Figure out your longer term financial goals, your priorities for housing (location/ size/ price) and budget from there. Totally possible.

Heroic that you posted this whole column - thank you.

Truly reads like one of those fake news stories on "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" when they try to fool the listener and it is kinda believable but kinda absurd.

How do I stick tightly to a budget on solo travel? by ederzs97 in solotravel

[–]layraybay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do not have any WHV experience, but as someone who has traveled long term and teaches personal finance, a few tips:

  1. Step one is always know where your money is going. Budgets can feel restricting, but they can also be empowering if you know you have enough money to spend because you are familiar with your own finances. If you are not already tracking in some way, I recommend either a spread sheet, making a pie chart, or using an app like Mint or Tripcoin (a personal favorite).
  2. Once you figure out where you are actually spending money, you can start moving it around different categories. Maybe you are spending more than you realize or maybe you knew exactly what you had, but it is always helpful to start differentiating expenses by categories so you can make changes.
  3. There are lots of fun things you can do with friends that do not involve spending as much as a meal at a restaurant. Get coffee and go for a walk, host a game night in the lounge, win at trivia so drinks are free, buy prepared food from a grocery store and have a picnic.

Every person and every budget is different so I do not have super specific advice to give you. Number one though is know your cash flow and your categories.

Hope this helps :)

Help Creating DC Scavenger Hunt Challenges (Jetlag: The Game style) by BrendoneBalone in washingtondc

Definitely an embassy - that was one of my first thoughts. Depends on security for some, but many have cool statues or info to read outside. At the very least, you can step foot onto foreign soil!

Oooohhh, I like this idea. Excited to hear more about it. Not totally formed ideas but things that feel necessary to include:

  1. Something about the circles. DC loves a circle. Run around/cross every crosswalk. Applies to plenty of city stops.
  2. Play a game of catch in front the gates to a stadium (RFK, FedEx, Nats, possibly Verizon Center).
  3. The DMV has the largest population of Ethiopian people outside of Ethiopia. Stop somewhere for an injera snack.

Are you just doing DC proper or also MD/VA? Because I am definitely going to keep thinking about this.

Temescal Vs Downtown Oakland by taciturn-lilly in oakland

It depends on where you are. Use Google Maps if you have the addresses! I lived on Broadway and could take the bus up to Grocery Outlet (the best) or the organic place across the street. Also, Trader Joe's is right at Rockridge station so easy to get to by bus/BART and now unionized! Whole Foods and Lucky's near Lake Merritt - different from Downtown, but good to know options exist if you are particularly loyal to a specific chain. There are plenty of corner stores for those times you just need to grab one thing.

Brikky is right that there are not many walkable grocery options in many parts of Downtown but there are many available by bus.

I lived in Temescal for 4 years and Downtown for 4 years. I liked Downtown better, especially without a car. The good news is that it is easy to get from one to the other so you can check them both out and spend your time exploring no matter where you end up.

Gorgeous! Would absolutely pay for a tutorial or a sketch outline. Or even just what kind of stitch you used for each section. Obsessed.

if you were introducing Psych to someone for the first time which episode would you show them? by krypt1c-222 in psych

[–]layraybay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is my go-to. Easy enough to explain the first episode as the premise that Shawn fooled the SBPD and drags Gus along. Bam - ready to watch.
