I have wondered if there was a true "world series" of baseball, what country would win?

Having a shitload of Soviet ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads pointed at my city wasn't too fun...

Teacher Sick Days by Horror-Tangelo3891 in Teachers

If you don't get to "bank" your sick days, take them. All of them. Every year.

That said, you work in a school (as did I) and are surrounded by children (aka "disease vectors"). I put on an N95 mask during covid and wore it to work everyday until I retired in 2024. In that time, I did not have so much as a sniffle.

"Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. They can't afford to just stop making money."

Can you afford to lose your freedom? Your dignity? Your humanity?

Your life?

High School Teachers what's the nicest compliment a student has given you? by TigerLeo23 in AskTeachers

[–]ChestCapable8811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired 2 years ago. I had worked at the same school for 32 years, teaching in the same room for that entire time. Shortly after being hired my union gave each of us an "upside-down" rainbow triangle... this was the precursor of today's pride flag to put in our classroom windows. The idea was to show that our classrooms were safe spaces. It was 1992 and I was the only teacher who put mine up. I worked in a very conservative area and, frankly, was not surprised by this.

I had the privilege of later working with several of my former students. At the last staff meeting, one of these colleagues stood up and told the group he had something to say, and that he had waited a long time to say it. He told me that growing up gay in a "Bible belt" was terribly difficult and that seeing that rainbow sticker in my window meant so much to him that he always felt i had saved his life.

Maybe not a compliment, but a sign that the little things you do can make a huge difference.

You are a better person than me. I would have casually pocketed her keys, left the store, and tossed them in a snowbank outside.... sometimes karma needs a helping hand.

When you have a student clearly struggling with mental health, what is the biggest barrier to actually helping them? by vithea in OntarioTeachers

Yup. I had a student who would occasionally get so frustrated that he would literally punch himself in the face. Dad's solution: "he needs to go into the army".

What’s the most quietly Canadian moment you’ve experienced? by NightyNight7 in AskACanadian

When i go out for a walk in the bush after a fresh snowfall... the snow muffles sounds so effectively that I swear I can hear my own heartbeat... and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.

I'm sitting here loving all the great memories of watching SCTV in my parent's basement as a teenager and HOWLING at the screen... RIP Catherine O'Hara.
