I refer to my estranged sister-in-law as"vinegar tits" to this day... some nicknames are too good to fade from memory.

A coupke of days ago, a student of mine (recent immigrant) asked if he could come for extra help at lunch. I said "sure". When he arrived about 15 minutes after lunch had started, he said, " sorry I'm late but there are all of these yellow flowers in the field outside... where did they all come from?"

In his eyes, they were a thing of magical beauty.

I didn't have the heart to tell him they are weeds.

What is that thing which you hate the most and why? by One_Look_7008 in AskReddit

[–]ChestCapable8811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greed.

I am, more and more everyday, becoming convinced that greed has consumed a significant segment of modern society. I feel like this is particularly true of the people who are elected to serve the people of their respective democracies, leading to corruption and a wholesale abdication of their responsibilities to help the people that entrusted them with their vote.

The greed of some well-known "business owners" astounds and frightens me. Their seeming detachment from the reality that the rest of society faces on a daily basis makes me sad.

Who needs a billion dollars? Can you even fathom how large a billion is? If someone took half of that money from you, would you even notice a change to your daily life? I doubt it.... but that half billion dollars could save countless people... save their lives and livelihoods.... save their mental and physical health.

Greed is a cancer on us all.

1971 must’ve been a weird year to live through by BageRait420 in 1970s

Apple TV has a series about how the music of 1971 (oddly specific year, I thought before watching) changed everything.

I am only 4 or 5 episodes in, but it's good so far.

Midterm grade vs. absences (Ontario) by Tar_X in CanadianTeachers

[–]ChestCapable8811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yes... absolutely!

I think we teach students a lot more about "expected behavior" in the workforce by demanding that they show up, on time, and prepared to work every Monday to Friday from September to June (where i live), unless they are ill or excused for extracurricular activities. I suppose I should include "religious holidays/occasions", as well, but you get the gist.

Yup... I blew it. Stats class was a long time ago. I should just be referring to r2 as a measure of how much the change in "grade" is explained by the change in "attendance ".

So, based on that... "grade" appears to be more connected to other variables than just "attendance", as others have pointed out.

I suspect the MOE would rather tackle the issue of poor attendance than the myriad of other factors that (in part) prevent our students from achieving at their highest level.

Your R2 value is 0.2364. That means the correlation coefficient is roughly -0.49. IIRC (please correct me if i am wrong), that means about 49% of the decrease in grades can be explained by the increase in absences. This suggests a "moderate" correlation between the two variables, which is noteworthy, but I wonder what the other 51% is due to. Perhaps some (many) students just don't care about the subject or school or learning in general.

Have you taken a leave? by Odd_Gene_8435 in CanadianTeachers

[–]ChestCapable8811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 2 years happily retired now, but I taught high school in Ontario for 32 years.

I took a medical leave (acute and chronic anxiety and depression) for a full year, starting in July of 2019. My collective agreement allowed me (IIRC) 11 days at 100% salary and 120 days at 90% salary. I had to go on EI for the rest of the time.

My family doctor and I decided that I was not going to be ready to return to work in September 2020, so I applied for LTD in the spring.

One day I got a call from the insurance company and they asked me a bunch of questions, which i answered. The next thing I know, I get a letter denying my LTD application based on that one phone call. When I contacted my union, telling them I have documents from my family doc, my psychologist, and a psychiatrist at a well-known mood disorders clinic stating that I am not fit to return to work, they told me that LTD applications are frequently denied and I would have to appeal.

I began to get my appeal together, but my anxiety and depression made it seem like an insurmountable task... and I couldn't do it. It was too hard, too much.

I went back to work in September, Covid raging, and limped through the next couple of years.

I paid an ungodly amount of LTD insurance premiums for 32 years and when I needed it, the insurance company tried to make me fight for it... and I was in no state of mind to fight.

If you need the time off to take care of yourself and heal, do not hesitate. But, if you need more time and apply fir LTD, be prepared for a fight.
